Berra: Town After Two Points a Game
Thursday, 10th Oct 2013 06:00

Christophe Berra and his Town team-mates are looking to follow the perfect promotion recipe of averaging two points per game.

Berra revealed: “We have been talking about it and if you can average two points per game over the piece you should get promoted.

“That’s our aim — we are a few points behind that but we’ve had a lot of tough away games and hopefully we can just keep being consistent and steady throughout the rest of the season.

“It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and there’s a long way to go. If we can keep picking up the points and putting in good performances, creating chances and defending well, we’ve got a right good chance.

“We have a smaller squad than a lot of teams, especially those at the top end of the table, but sometimes that’s better. We’ve gelled together and we’ve got a close-knit bunch of players.”

Berra would love his time in Suffolk to mirror his achievement at Wolves in helping them to win promotion to the Premier League.

He added: “When I joined Wolves it was the last day of the winter transfer window and we were top of the league. We were flying and going into every game full of confidence.

“Down here it’s a tiny bit different — the lads had a great end to last season but we’re still building, still maturing as a team and still getting to know each other. It will take time but there’s a lot of potential and so far we’ve been on a good run.

“We have played really well in all the games this season, apart from the second half at Derby and the second half against Leeds, and we’ve been very consistent.”

Berra made his first Championship start for Town in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham at the end of August and has since added a further six appearances during an ever-present run in the side, having spent the early part of the season getting up to speed.

“I came here late during pre-season so I was playing catch-up a little bit and I knew I had to be patient,” he explained.

“The team finished well last season and the manager was obviously sticking to a similar team and there were a few of us who had to be patient and we were.

“I’m in the team now and hopefully, if I keep my performances at a good level, I’ll stay in the team. In football generally, if you keep your standards high you will stay in the team, but if you let your standards drop there are a lot of players currently on the sidelines, working hard in training, who will be able to fill in and do a good job.”

Meanwhile, first-year pro Jonny Leddy underwent surgery yesterday having suffered a shoulder injury in the recent U21s friendly at QPR.

"We have had a lot of tough away games", was he hoping for easy away games? ...Some of those they should have won and can blame nobody but them selves for throwing away points in games they have led in, i dont want to hear excuses...coyb

Christophe, good to have targets fella, if we get the 2 points per game from now on in we'll be in the automatic promotion spots never mind the play offs...

keep winning at home and when the away wins start to come, that's when we'll know if this is the year!

if they want 2 points a game surely marcus evans is going to have to dig out his dusty old cheque book again that has sadly never seen the light of day since keane purchased half the sunderland reserve team!

Berra hints at why we've improved this year. Consistency. OK there have been 2 halves of dodgy football but compare that to under Keane or Jewell where we'd be up and down like a yo-yo. How many times did we concede 5 goals under those two? This is is probably because we look more like a team.

2 points a game? I'd settle for 1.65!

It's nice to hear what the players think about recent performances. In amny ways, I agree with this dose of realism and calm.

However, it was still criminal to lose at Derby! But that's what you get if you follow an aproach which will help keep things tight in many other games, I'm sure.

This is not a moan, but if we're aiming for two points a game and, as Berra says we're a bit behind it at the moment, why didn't we try and beat Sheffield Wednesday instead of settling for a point? I hate this attitude of "delighted with an away point". The top teams will win away games, and we're not going to win every home game are we. We aren't a top team, but we're certainly better than Wednesday and we could have beaten them.

2 points per game would be welcome. But MM needs to realise that sometimes targeting 3 points in away games is possible. I have read numerous times how we could've had 3 points in away fixtures but MM doesn't go for it. A more positive approach in 'easier' games would be welcome by fans and it may help take some of the pressure off of our defence and goalkeeper during the match itself.

Do the math whoever minused me, it means play-offs which is far more realistic than automatic promotion!

11 games gone so should be on 22pts but only on 15pts. We'd need to win the next 7 in a row to catch up. I think any side that gets auto promotion would see at least one run of 6-7 straight wins in their season. Why not start now?

don't expect total agreement from some of us mugs, that travel miles to watch what seems to be a team playing for a point then....

Should have got 4 more pts than we did, just on the last 2 games. I'm not moaning, just stating a fact.

i'm not being negative, however, I do agree with Dissboyitfc and Garv. The team should be positive and go for the win, believe in themselves and the goals and wins will come, both at home and crucially away.
COYB!

Yep agree with Dissboy etc. If they have the mentality of doing this then surely they're (at times not going for a win depending on what they've achieved at home) so if say hypothetically we lose against Burnley the boys will defo be going for an away win whoever we play?
Surely bar the 'big boys' who have just been relegated we should be going for 3 points every game home and away, and if we average 2 points per game at the end of the season then so be it. I can't help equating it to golf and saying " I want to be +1 over per hole and getting my irons out on every tee" rather than getting my driver out on most holes and going for it. :)

Better to go for 2 points per game than 1 point per 2 games under Keane and Jewell

Keaneish is correct. It's 1.65 or 1.66 required for the play-offs. In order to get on target for that we need to win the next 3 games but to get on target for 2 points per game we would need to win the next 7 games. Maths lesson over.

Thank you eatonblue! I can't seriously believe anyone on here expects us to finish with 92 points!! If we're pushing 70 pts with a handful of games to go I'm sure we'd all be delighted!!

Keanish -in recent weeks it seems only you can consistently talk sense onhere. For the record people , we are not Sir Bobbys team anymore, we are a Championship side in a stage of rebuild. One step at time please.

As Keanish said I'd be happy to if we had 70 points in the bag with a few games to go as well, whether we achieve that is very arguable. Personally I don't feel our team is mentally strong enough to go on a good run towards the end of the season to get a string of results when it matters (and I'm not talking about relegation).
