Marriott Could Go Out on Loan
Friday, 25th Oct 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’d be willing to allow 19-year-old striker Jack Marriott to go out on loan to gain experience if a club wants him. First-year pro Marriott has been on the bench for the first team recently but is yet to add to his debut sub appearance on the final day of last season at Burnley.

McCarthy said: “If somebody wants him on loan. That’s the issue. If somebody’s seen him and fancies him in the lower leagues. He has got an eye for goal, so there’s the potential for that.”

Plenty of representatives from lower league clubs, including Southend assistant boss Dave Penney and first team coach Graham Coughlan, were at Monday’s 1-1 U21s draw with Bristol City in which Marriott scored in the fourth minute.

McCarthy says he took that goal well and that the youngster is pushing for that second senior appearance.

“We haven’t seen him [in the first team this season] but he’s getting closer because he has that happy knack [of scoring goals] and it was a good finish,” he said.

“He had a couple of other good chances in the game as well, just getting on the end of things from flicks on. He’s got that eye for goal.”

McCarthy says Marriott, who was born in Beverley but was based in Kettering prior to joining the Blues’ youth set-up, understands that he needs to be patient: “Of course he’ll say to me he’s happy and he understands it, but he might be at home saying he doesn’t.

“But I spoke to him the other day and he’s absolutely thrilled to be in the position he’s in, not to just be training with the U21s, but training with the first team, travelling with the first team.

“He’s delighted with the progress he’s making. Of course he wants to play, but where he is from where he thought he might be, he’s absolutely thrilled.”

The Town boss says he has no immediate plans to bring anyone in on loan, although is keeping his options open: “I keep looking but I always say, they’ve got to come and play in the team. If you take loans, we’re not going to take any kids, they’d have to come and play.

“And, as I’ve said before, they’d have to come and play really well to knock the lads out of the team that are in the starting line-up at the moment. But I’m still looking and if needs be, then we’ll do it.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy believes striker Frank Nouble has performed better when starting matches rather than from the bench with the 22-year-old having struggled to make an impact so far this season.

“It’s never easy coming on,” McCarthy said. “I think Frank has done better when he’s started. If I look back at when he played against Peterborough [last season].

“It took him a while to get in and then he had a great run and hit the crossbar. I look at him against Birmingham, certainly Crystal Palace, he’s been better from the start.

“Perhaps I’ve put him on just to shore things up and to make sure he works hard and stops the opposition coming out from the back.

“And we haven’t created that many chances when he’s been on. So, it would be a disservice to him to say it’s just been down to him.”

If he's got an "eye for goal", play him here rather than letting some other club take advantage!

Makes perfect sense. Still unproven at this level. Jordan Rhodes went out on loan three times in between making a handful of appearances for town. The first of those loan spells was unsuccessful so it shows young players need time to cut their teeth at a higher level. We all know only too well how Rhodes faired on the back of some loan spells so i'd be in favour of this...

It also must mean Taylor will definitely be included again.

Have to agree with Sebastian though, Nouble could definitely do with a big loan spell somewhere!

Nouble could do with a permanent loan. The more I read about MM's policies on youth, loans etc the more I want him to take the Eire job. We have a young hungry player with ability not being given any chance, is 19 too young, of course not if he has the skills required which Nouble obviously does not have.

Should be given minutes on the pitch in the first team. If he is as good as everyone is saying he is he should have been loaned out to a league 1 club for a short period (3 months) at the start of the season to get a hunger and an experience for first team football. At 19 - 21 players careers are stifled by lack of first team opportunities. If he plays 10 games and doesn't score or create chances there fair enough but his record for the U21's & U18's suggests that that this unlikely to happen.

Whether you lot think Marriott should be playing or not point is he isn't. You can't say a proven goalscorer as he's played 1 game in the championship, sending him out on loan to gain first team experience week in week out is the obvious choice.

Why not take the ireland job mick ? You've done it befor , its a lot less stressful for you and you have an under 21 team to look at the youngsters befor you have to make your mind up about them. What do you mean we have an under 21 team too ?

It should be Nouble being sent out on loan if anything.

It amazes me that championship clubs are prepared to give promising premiership youngsters game time but not there own. This strikes me of only being of short term benefit as they return to their parent club. We should not be looking to improve premiership clubs but giving our youngsters a chance for long term benefits to us. Sir Bobby will be watching in disbelief he would never of been worried about playing someone like Marriott.

Cant believe this, we should be giving him game time not sending him out to the benefit of a League 1/2 team. He wouldnt need to actually achieve much to better what ew have now in support of McGoldrick.
Murphy, Nouble *&$+#~~*

If you can remember Nouble had a good run and hit the bar at Peterborough last season he hasn't done a lot since send him out on loan he is not match fit and yet gets game time week after week when we want a goal fifteen minutes or so from the end of the match put someone on who can score or at least knows where the goal is.

LOL Mick, you little wind-up merchant. How Nouble is poised for a starting role and not Marriott I'll never know.

I'm afraid Nouble has been very poor, so surely Marriott can do no worse? Furthermore, if he goes out on loan, then surely we will sign a striker on loan. Murphy plays well every one in 5 or 6, whilst Nouble doesn't look like scoring - where are our other options (other than Marriott)?

When Taylor comes back we should allow Marriott and Nouble to get loan experience somewhere, think Nouble would be League One and Marriott League 2. Nouble has the potential as he is strong and quick but everytime the balls gets played up to him, his first touch lets him down and the ball just bounces off him. Murphy is much more effective as the target man.

Thinking about changing my Avatar........
I think Nouble has had enough chances on the bench, not looked like making a difference once when coming on so far this season.
Time to give Marriot a chance from the bench, Taylor back after next week, I would rather have our striking options from; Didsy, Murphy, Marriot & Taylor.!

I really can't beleive what I am reading, we want to send a player out on loan who can score goals , when we don't even have Wordsworth on the bench ; yet we play that donkey Nouble. Words fail me!!!

SBR a Legend don't even compare him to what we have. This club is a joke from what we had under the Legend Sir Bobby Robson. Please don't compare him to the dross managers we have had. It remains to be seen what MM can do , we need to give hime time but IMHO he has some strange ways of playing the game and substitutions are far too late. And playing really sub standard players such as Nouble and Edwards.
