McCarthy Delighted With Point
Saturday, 26th Oct 2013 18:23

Town boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with his side’s point from their 1-1 draw at Bolton, but admitted that it was an under par performance.

“I’m delighted with a point because that’s possibly our worst performance away from home,” he said. “The game wasn’t particularly good.

“Downstairs I used the words awful, dour and dire in different interviews and that was probably what it was.

“But then we’re away from home, we’re 1-0 down, we get point. I’ve got to be delighted with that.”

Ryan Tunnicliffe was close to putting the Blues in front in the first half and McCarthy had praise for Bolton keeper Andy Lonergan: “We had the best chance certainly.

“Give the keeper a bit of credit, it’s a magnificent save. Tunners comes in and he puts it straight back on target and you think he should score. But you know what, the keeper, I thought was magnificent, it was a terrific save.”

The Town boss was pleased with the way his defence coped with Jermaine Beckford and David Ngog: “I thought the back four last week against Danny Ings and Sam Vokes were terrific and again today, against really tough opponents, I thought they were great. They were prepared to run in behind and they were a handful. I’m delighted with our back four.”

Despite right-back Luke Chambers appearing to take a knock near the end, McCarthy said everyone is fine: “He’s all right, nobody’s reported to me that they’re injured.”

Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman was disappointed that his side couldn’t claim their first home win of the season having gone ahead: “I felt that it was a very hard game, we were very dogged today. We showed organisation, we showed commitment and had enough chances to win the game.

“We got ourselves 1-0 up and I felt that we’ve let ourselves down because we conceded again too quickly and that’s not acceptable.

“So, all in all, we’re disappointed with the result after being 1-0 up and looking quite determined to win the game.”

He was pleased with scorer Medo Kamara: “It was a great freekick. I thought Medo did well, he was put up against an Ipswich team which was very dogged and we matched that, we showed our qualities.

“I thought Medo’s passing was very good today. He isn’t renowned for his freekicks as yet, but he does practice a lot of them. After the game he told me he needs to take more!”

"A point away from home in International Football is always good".

Oops - did I say that out loud??

Have to agree. Bolton will start climbing the table now so we'll look back on that point at the end of the season as a good one even if some will ridicule it as being 'negative'.

Frustrating that we haven't won away from home this season. Good to see we recovered from a goal down, but can't say I am delighted with a draw against a bottom four side.

I think it's a DECENT result but not great. Don't see how anyone can be 'Delighted' about drawing against a team who haven't won at home this season. I think that shows what our ambitions are this year if that's the case.

2 pts on average at home and 1 pt on average away is all we need to be challenging play-offs Michael11 so how we do it this half of the season i don't care but i'd definitely expect this squad with a few new additions in January and a fit Taylor to be playing more creative stuff come the 2nd half of the season.

We'd all like us to be playing as well as we did under Burley and Royle (pre-2005) at this level, but people seem to have short memories about the damage MM's predecessor's did. A year ago, we seem to be signing a player a week on loan or trial. Richie Wellens and Nigel Reo-Coker in centre midfield with Andy Drury waiting to come on. Now, the squad is settling, some young players have been scouted and brought in, Klug is back, we are trying to get an Academy Status 1, and we are mid table and hard to beat. If that is not progress, I don't know what is.

chris makin, makes a comment. wow, what a surprise!!!! its negative. who is jimmy juan. spot on. trouble with some of our fans is that after mm did so well to save us from relegation last season they expected us to immediately become a team challenging for promotion this season. anyone with a bit of thought would realise its gonna take a little longer to get to that level. I for one will be happy with midtable come the end of this season. will certainly be progress on the past few seasons.

A point at Bolton is a good result, although it is disappointing not to have won away yet and not to have won the last four games. We need three points against Barnsley to avoid sliding down the table.

We do have to remember the shambles McCarthy took over and the fact he has built the side on free transfers. In that context, mid-table represents success for now.

Keanish clearly you are no mathematician Burnley home no points Bolton away one point ahhhhh that's one point not three dohhhhh.
Even if you average the season it's still mid table not play offs.
Please FAI make a large offer!

how long is this going to go on? 14th looking at mid table, and can't score a goal.

how many away games has MM won? we're already looking at next season.......

are we going to get a loan striker or leave it until it's too late? someone needs to do something. everyone seems well and truly in their comfort zone.

I see the usual negative morons are on here posting their negative drivel. The saying "Be careful what you wish for" springs to mind. Mick has performed miracles with the absolute shambles of a team he inherited and yet it is still not good enough for some of you!

Not sure what some of you are looking for? above mid table will be progress. remember burley worked to a 5 year plan. All you have to do is look at Crystal Palace for a club that gets promoted too early.

Pip50 - ahhh no, think its you that cant add. Keanish said AVERAGE of 2pts per home game, thats 46 pts plus 23 from away games equals 69 pts.
Last year Leicester took 6th place with 68. DOH !

Hello, last time I looked we got a goal and a point. A decent result for most reasonable minds looking at it beforehand. We are still not out of the running for a play off place and with 30 odd games to go it is clear that we are NOT just yet looking at next season.

It may not have been a great performance today but we fans need to remember that after 13 matches last season we had massed just 7 points. What MM has achieved in the time he has had here is nothing short of remarkable. How many on here really throught we would avoid relegation last season ? After our survival many fans expect us to be promotion candidates but it takes time to build new foundations and Mick is doing an excellent job. Yes we could be a bit more offensive away from home and risk losing but at present we do not have the players to make quick breaks. If MM stays he will I am sure get the creative midfielder we want, the goalkeeper we want and some pace. We will have to wait until January or even next close season with FFP to consider but I for one am just grateful we are not bottom of the league as we were this time last season. Upwards and onwards with MM I hope.

...... seems as if MM's boring, negative Football has plenty of support and following, judging by some of the posts - far too many for this Club to ever have to challenge for anything to satisfy some ITFC Supporters. SHAME.

Yes....3-0 against the mariners was the final nail for GB
A great shame that complacency & booze got the better of him.
We'd still be cutting the mustard in the premier league if second season had gone okay
