Edwards One of the Fittest
Thursday, 31st Oct 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says skipper Carlos Edwards is one of the fittest players he knows, despite the Trinidad and Tobago international turning 35 last week.

Edwards is currently out of the first XI, having been one of the players left out after the home defeat to Leeds in August, but his boss says he’s getting his head down in training and trying to win back his place: “Carlos is Carlos, he’s great, he just gets on and does his work and does it as I’d expect him to do it. But they’re all like that, the lads are good.”

Although the former Sunderland, Luton and Wrexham man, who previously played under McCarthy during a loan spell at Wolves, was operating at right-back under former boss Paul Jewell, the current manager says he sees him very much as a midfield player, albeit one with defensive attributes.

“He’s played there, but the reality is that he’s a wide right player for me,” he said. “That was proven because I played him there against Birmingham [in his first game in charge] and then moved him once I’d got a right-back [Bradley Orr] in.

“He’s fabulous at defending from the front as a right winger. He gets back in and tucks in. But then Paul Anderson does that well too, he works his shift and he’s deserved to stay in, Paul, he’s played well.

“Carlos played all the [U21 game against Bristol City last week] just to get him minutes. He’s one of the fittest guys I know, especially at that age, but it’s still important to play 90 minutes. That was all it was for.”

Meanwhile, former Blues left-back Shane O'Connor, 23, has joined Portadown, who play in the [Northern] Irish Premier League.

Elsewhere, another ex-Town full-back Frank Yallop is tipped to become the new coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps, who have parted company with their previous boss Martin Rennie.

As much as I admire Carlos who asides from his driving blemishes, he is a modal professional who the younger players will look upto. I have a friend who used to babysit his children and she said he and his wife are such nice people.

However, I feel we need a more direct winger, someone who will make the opposition full backs sit tight so this allows our full backs to press.

I hate to compare but a young Dyer or Rueser would be fantastic right now! We have contacts at Ajax so I don't understand why we don't grab a young winger on loan? They have a proven record of producing pacey attacking wingers.

It's just a bit of a shame he doesn't offer very much else apart from being very fit.

Still think he is better than Anderson much more creative. However I think it's our weak link as is the left wing

What is a "worst footballer". How do you describe one. Their is millions of football players in the country and Carlos has played in the top league as a regular starting player. To even be sitting on the bench at age 35 and being subbed on most games in the championship is quite an achievement.

Miles better than Anderson. Really dont see how Ando gets picked before him. No coincidence our right side is our weakest part of the team this year without him.

It's early days for Anderson who can only improve the more he plays. Carlos is clearly on the way down however and while he can still be good on his day, those days are getting further apart. His performances in the games he started at the beginning of the season were very mediocre and you have to question the impact playing for his country over the summer had, while younger players were getting their well-needed rest.

With that said Carlos has been a fantastic player for this club. Whether circa £2m was a sensible amount of money to pay for him I'm not sure, but he is easily Keane's best signing.

With all this back slapping that has gone on over the last few months we surely have to be up there with Barcelona, Bayern etc. don't we?

Watch Anderson against Barnsley he won't beat his man won't whip crosses in very average player Bristol City must have torn mm arm off when he offered jet I'm not a jet fan but least with him on the pitch was alway that chance of somthing special happening Anderson never looks to run at people nearly every game we've lost has been caused by a winger beating his man and whipping a cross in burnley qpr reading Leeds seems everything that we put in the box has to go through cressy team have started to work that out
