Skuse After Elusive First Town Goal
Thursday, 31st Oct 2013 06:00

Cole Skuse is pleased with the way he has started life as an Ipswich player — with one notable exception. While the player snapped up on a free transfer from Bristol City has been pleased with his displays so far he admits he would be far happier if he had managed to break his scoring duck.

Skuse said: “I am getting a few oohs and aahs now so I’m definitely getting closer. Like I’ve said before it’s not for the want of trying.

“I am attempting to do my bit and I’ve had one shot hit the post, one cleared off the line and another that scraped a post. It’s coming. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to score a few goals in the season.

“A lot of people have said throughout my career that I should score more goals but for whatever reason I haven’t. But I know that I should do.”

Despite the lack of goals, Skuse has taken the move in his stride and done well enough for boss Mick McCarthy to identify him as someone who would not look out of place in the Premier League,

He added: “I feel as if I’ve been doing okay but I’d like to do a little bit more in terms of affecting games, not just in terms of goals but assists and just doing my bit going forward.

“I have settled in well and I really, really like it here. People were questioning whether I’d be able to move out of Bristol and settle in here but I feel I have done it really well.

“I’ve only been back to Bristol once or twice, which is a good sign. I’m not itching to get in my car and drive straight down the A12. I think the fact that my family — my wife and my little girl — are here is a big help, plus my family from home come up all the time to visit.

“That makes it a lot easier and I’ve not really missed Bristol. My dad doesn’t miss a game and my mum tries to get to all the home games with him, which means I see enough of them and it’s nice.”

Meanwhile, Skuse has paid tribute to midfield partner Luke Hyam, who is also awaiting his first goal of the season, the pair having started every one of the club’s 13 Championship games this season.

He added: “Luke’s a really good boy and he’s easy to play with. He’s in the same boat as I am because he feels he could be getting forward a bit more and scoring goals.

“I let him go because he’s younger and he’s got fresher legs. He can do more of the forward running and I’ll sit back a bit more.

“The manager doesn’t pull us by the ear and tell us what to do — we just play off each other and I think we’ve done that quite well.

“There won’t be many games where you see massive, gaping holes in midfield. If Luke runs on then I’ll sit and vice versa."

I like Skuse, his a great passer off the ball and we really should be playing through him. If MM still resists on playing with natural wide men then I feel we should play a tight diamond formation; I'd have Hyam sitting infront of the back four, Skuse, Tunniclife & Anderson/Tabb in the middle with a fit Taylor in behind McGoldrick.

The sad thing is, these two are never going to wade in their share of the goals ! I could still see john wark even at the age he is now scoring as many if not more than these two. I like Skuse, but lets not kid ourselves, we are not going to see anymore than a goal or two from Skuse and Hyam.......COYB

If we had wide men who could take a game toi the opposition then Skuse and Hyam would come into their own. We havnt got that at the moment

There is only one natural goalscorer in the team, two counting Marriott who does not get a game, our midfield has no flare, Thankyou.

A great signing and captain material - does the ugly stuff really well and is the optimum in a defensive midfielder, what's missing is attacking wingers OR a creative midfielder to support him. Norris may not have played the prettiest football but as a box to box midfielder who scored and set up he was excellent for us and we miss that

Agree with bluelady 100%. We are really missing a David Norris or a Tommy Miller at his peak in the 2004/5 season.

dont worry we used to midfielders not scoring goals here only the defence and forwards score goals only norris miller even leadboots got 13 goals in 100 odd apearances are exceptions in recent times

How many of Leadbitter's goals were penalties? Didn't score much from open play.

I really like what i have seen of Skuse so far. He is the type of guy we need sitting in front of the back four. Not afraid to stick his foot in and can be a passing metronome at times. Very Matty Holland esque i think.

The problem we have is that as has been eluded to many times, he and Lukey H are too similar in there for us to be a midfield force going forwards. I still am not sure what has happened to Wordy as i think we would benefit greatly from he would bring to the team.

But then that would probably mean dropping CS or LH. It pains me to say because he is a local lad, that if that becomes the case then we would see LH drop to the bench as i think CS gives us more overall.

We also have Taylor to come back in. Will be interesting to see where he fits in MM plan.

Looking forward to tomorrow night! COYB's!!

If MM read all the comments this week he would play Wordsworth and Taylor and leave out Hyam and Murphy.

What would be so wrong about that?

Last time I saw Wordsworth he was so slow on the ball he looked like he was standing still... Not sure he is the answer but does offer a different dimension

Nothing wrong with the team, been a good solid start to the season. All those calling for other players to come in are clueless.

spot on oddball. I really do wonder about some of the so-called fans on here. I think we've been infiltrated by the budgies.

Oddball your right it's been a solid start, but can you see us going and pushing on with 2 really defensive midfield. I know I've said it before and so have many other but I think 3-5-2 is the way forward. We don't have efficient enough wingers and skuse and hyam work well together defensively, so put the 3 cbs at the back have cresswell and Hewitt playing wingbacks, hyam and skuse and tunnicliffe down the middle. Hyam and skuse can cover in off the wingbacks if need be. Tunnicliffe can be given a licence to push forward. And mcgoldrick with murph upfront he would thrive off of incoming balls from cressy, Hewitt, tunners and mcgoldrick playing off him.if tunnicliffe leaves in January, Taylor should be prepared to take his place.

He is a wonderful player BUT alongside Hyam is made to look ordinary.

Hyam is the problem. Skuse and Tunnicliffe in the middle is the answer.

Tunnicliffe got a brief spell in central midfield at the weekend didn't he? Did anyone see how he did? I was listening to the radio commentary intently to try and get an idea of how he'd do, but it sounded like he did very little and we missed Hyam's energy.

@bluemikey100
What about Keith Andrews he chipped in with a heap load and was top scorer for a while even when he went back! shame he's getting on a bit

Apologies for expressing my opinion based on what ive seen this year oddball, almost though this was a forum for opinion or something. Dont know what i was thinking.

Im not arguing that we havent been solid, i just think theres something missing from the midfield which if we had it could allow us to push on up the league and challenge.

But what do i know, im just a budgie infiltrator and a so called fan.
