McCarthy Not Getting Carried Away
Monday, 9th Dec 2013 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is remaining typically grounded despite three wins on the trot taking ninth-placed Town to within two points of the Championship’s play-off zone.

Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Huddersfield continued the impetus built up by the 1-0 win at Charlton last weekend and Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat of Blackburn.

“You want to build momentum all the time, there’s no special time for doing it,” McCarthy said. “We know Christmas is going to be tough with the squad that we have and the games that we’ve got coming.

“Just keep picking up points, I don’t get carried away with all that. If we end up in the play-offs at the end of the season, scraping in on goal difference, I’ll just take it when it comes.

“We are planning to finish as high as we can and it’s great to have three wins on the bounce. But we're going to Forest Saturday and that could burst the bubble very quickly, but we’ll see.”

The Town boss was delighted to see his two first-choice strikers grab the goals which beat the Terriers: “They’re a good partnership, they’ve been our best partnership, hence they play every week when the two of them are fit.

“Dids is the more technical footballer, but Murph is more powerful, quicker, aggressive and better in the air.

“If you mixed them both together you’re going to have one helluva player and he wouldn’t be here! But you could say that about a lot of players.”

Of late winning goal scorer Murphy, he added: “I signed him from Waterford for Sunderland for £100,000.

"He’s had a bit of a mixed and varied career, but he loves it here and I was keen to re-sign him and I think he’s repaying me in spades.”

I know there are critics on here about MM's footballing style (or lack of they would say), and I understand that. But my feeling is one of relief that we are avoiding a relegations scrap and have a squad small but still strong enough to send several out on loan. Nothing's perfect but we are definitely coming out of a dark tunnel. If nothing else MM and TC with their scouts and the Academy One status to come, are building proper foundations for our club.

I agree whoisjimmyjuan this is the first time in many years I feel some genuine optimism and pride in the team. That doesn't mean we will necessarily get to the playoffs but we are, at last, competing in this division, rather than treading water. I feel a change in MM as well, more flexibility, using the full squad. No coincidence this has all come after the Ireland job was put to bed.

I can really see us in the playoff mix come the end of the season.
It's great to see both our strikers score as MM says both players have their own good ability.
Some tough matchs coming over the Xmas period and our squad might not be the biggest but it's pretty strong in a lot of areas.
Keep up the good work town and surprise a few people :-)

Im sure it has not gone unnoticed that the goals we tend to concede come after good work by pacey wingers , Dyer , Hammel etc. We lack nothing else in our side really apart from that aspect. Jordon offers that hence MM signing him , but will he get game time.

Cant get too carried away with sides like Leicester, Derby, QPR, Watford, Burnley all looking good above us.

Although we've come on leaps and bounds this week, i think Nottingham Forest away will show us just how far we've come or not. You can only beat what's in front of you though, so it's still been an excellent week, but i'd take a draw on Saturday.

With the exception of Blackpool, Derby and Forest (who we've yet to play this season),Town have lost all the other games against the opposition currently above them up to 8th place! Burnley, QPR, Leicester, Reading and Leeds have all beaten Town this season. If Town want to be challenging for the top six then they will need to win some of the return fixtures against those clubs. Sadly, going on previous form, it suggests Forest will beat Town on Saturday!

Ive seen us play the top teams this season and in most csses we have more than matched these teams. We are just a couple of players short of top 6 imo.

Over to you Mr Evans! !

Come january we will see just how ambitious evans is about our club and how interested he is in achieving premiership football. At the moment we are doing a great job and our showing some real togetherness and cohesion as a tight knit squad. We do have a small squad and whilst we are grinding out results i think we are still 3 or 4 decent players away from really challenging. As arnie said over to you mr evans!!!

I am just so happy we are progressing slowly - none of that quick and burst cr*p.
And to be honest, I don't remember when was the last time we were this close to play-offs at this stage of the season. Magilton time I think...

Not really sure why some of the commenters above, think that Evans doesn't want to be in the Prem and isn't backing Mick if he doesn't give him loads of cash to splash. Evans will want to be in the prem more than any of us. He will give us as much money as he can, taking consideration of the Financial Fair Play Rules. We don't really need to buy anyone anyway. Just sign Hunt on a 2 year deal, Bramble for 6 months, Graham's loan extended to the end of the season, and maybe Sterman, but that would leave chambers out of the starting 11 altogether as berra is one of the first names on the teamsheat . Mick won't want to do that as he is a decent player, been playing pretty well, has a good relationship with fans and plays captin when Edwards is off. COYB

Pacey wide men and a consistent solid centre midfielder alongside Skuse and we'll stand a very good chance of making a playoff push. We're not quite there yet but it is achievable.

Agreed we will learn a lot from the Forest trip, over the last few games we've won without playing the best football and going how we've played by and large against the bigger clubs has been almost the opposite playing better but losing.
I feel Mick has made a few mistakes this season largely with the midfield but it seems he brings more steel to our performances, trying to think the last time we lost by 2 clear goals - might have been against Wigan and that flattered them. Going in the right direction.

As the BBC reporter said Chambers is not a right back, feel we need to sign a right back in Jan as Hewitt is not really ready yet and Viselli is not in favor at present.
Chambers does his best but it not really his best position

agreed karlosfandangal, i was really pleased when MM arrived and relieved Edwards of his right back Duties, with MM saying, " Edwards is no right BacK" so really annoyed he has opted for another square peg in a round hole..... COYB
