McCarthy Wants to Keep Tunnicliffe
Saturday, 21st Dec 2013 06:02

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he wants to keep on-loan Manchester United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe for the rest of the season. The 20-year-old’s current spell is up in January.

“The decision, from my point of view, has been made and I want to keep him,” McCarthy confirmed. “I’ve tried to ring Moyesey but he’s busy and it doesn’t need to be done yet. His agent knows we want to keep him, Tunners knows I want to keep him. We’ll see what happens.

“I guess the only way it won’t happen is if they want to take him back and put him in the team or if they want to take him back and put him out at a Premier League club, which could happen, but we knew that at the start. Hopefully, he’ll be with us.”

The Town boss refused to be drawn on reports he is keen on signing Emmanuel Frimpong on loan from Arsenal in January, having previously signed the 21-year-old midfielder on a similar basis when in charge at Wolves.

“I wouldn’t tell you if he was,” he said. “I had him at Wolves, but I wouldn’t tell you because that’s unfair.

“An agent’s put it out that I’m looking at people, but you can take all that with a pinch of salt unless you’ve heard it from me.”

The Town boss says he has no immediate plans to loan out any of his other strikers having added Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to his squad: “Not really unless one of them isn’t playing and needs a month’s football. It might be beneficial if that happens, but at the minute that’s not the case.

“Why try and pre-empt anything like that? Let’s see. If I get a couple of injuries to them, I’m down to three strikers, and it can happen as easy as that.”

Taylor is better than Tunni imo. He impressed Mick the other day and I reckon he (Taylor) will be on the pitch at some point today in midfield!

He looked pretty good when he first came here but has gone off the boil of late. I would much rather have Hunt playing in left mid over him and if the Frimpong rumours are true, then him and Skuse in the middle.

Taylor's football skills are not in doubt but he's a sick note waiting yo happen I don,t know how p/bro keep him on pitch I,d love to see him & hunt going at defences together that would be very interesting with. S.e.b. super Mc & Murphy I think the opposition would be really worried with our defence mouth watering idea upward to the top

I have been a little disappointed with Tunnicliffe after his early promise, although that said he has played a lot of games for Ipswich and he is only 20 so could improve. I suspect he will make a career for himself at Championship level, if he works hard and avoids injuries, but there is no way I see him playing for Man Utd again.

Tunners has had a lot of game time with us and for me he has neither let us down or set the world on fire. I suspect he will be allowed to stay with us to the end of season. Would be good to see him on the bench with Frimpong starting in front of him once Frimpong is fit and assuming we sign him.

A good squad player, but think his form has dipped recently after an impressive start. Good to see Mick wants to retain our strikers, previous managers made do with just three at times. We need to have cover in all positions with so many games coming up. Sadly Taylor and Anderson are injury prone, so Tunners is a useful player to have around. If he goes, we need to replace.

Have to agree with other posters that his form has dipped recently ans he actually played better when out of position on the left. He and Cresswell did work well together. Worth keeping but he needs to up his performance, and I honestly can't see him breaking into the Utd team.
