Moyes Hints at Tunnicliffe Return
Monday, 23rd Dec 2013 15:45

Manchester United manager David Moyes has hinted that he may want on-loan midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe back at Old Trafford for the second half of the season. The 20-year-old is with the Blues until January with boss Mick McCarthy having already confirmed that he would like him to remain at Portman Road for the rest of the campaign.

Asked whether he had plans to add to his squad in January Red Devils boss Moyes said: "We'll try, but I'm quite actively looking at our own boys.

"The likes of Jesse Lingard [on loan at Birmingham], Nick Powell [at Wigan] and Ryan Tunnicliffe - the boys who are out on loan - they are the ones I am making sure I keep my eye on because they are the future.

"They are the ones who are part of the club and have been in the system so we are certainly keeping our eyes on all the boys who have been out on loan and hoping that they might be able to come back and help us if we need it in January as well."

Speaking about Tunnicliffe on Friday, McCarthy said: “I’ve tried to ring Moyesey but he’s busy and it doesn’t need to be done yet. His agent knows we want to keep him, Tunners knows I want to keep him. We’ll see what happens.

“I guess the only way it won’t happen is if they want to take him back and put him in the team or if they want to take him back and put him out at a Premier League club, which could happen, but we knew that at the start. Hopefully, he’ll be with us.”

Tunnicliffe has made 16 starts and four sub appearances for the Blues so far.

If this is true Evans will have to back Mick in January. Our squad is not good enough to lose a player of this quality

He's a lot better than the shower currently playing for Man U

Taylor will fit the gap. Mick will make sure of that! We will then be an attacking midfield...Hoora.

Tunnicliffe has done fairly well for Ipswich, but he needs to continue with regular football if he is to progress. There is no point going back to Man Utd to perhaps come on as a substitute in an FA Cup tie then not feature for ages. It's that sort of thing that damages England - too few players getting regular football.

I would assume that both Lingard and Powell may be closer to current Man Utd first team quality at present, due to the fact that the former has been in goal scoring form and the latter (although a similar age to Tunnicliffe) is more experienced. I have liked the look of Tunnicliffe, he is becoming a decent player in the middle, but he doesn't strike me as a player with Premier League credentials at the moment, therefore I would be surprised if he were to go back to join the Man Utd first team.

He is one of the true "footballers" we have at the club at the moment. Assured on the ball and with just that bit of extra quality. Him, Skuse, McGoldrick, Cresswell and Hunt. I suppose Tabb fits in with those boys too but we havent really seen too much of him have we.

Still think we need to sign a natural wide player. Midfield lacks quality, creativity and width. I like Tunners but his form has dipped recently.

Well he can't be any worse than Tom Cleverley! I think we can still find another loanee as good as Tunnicliffe if he were to go back too so not overly bothered.

I personally won't be too disappointed if he goes back as I have faith that Mick McCarthy will make alternative arrangements. I do like Tunnicliffe but would not say he is the answer to our problem of not having any pace in the side nor a craftsman in midfield. Can't fault his work ethic and he did have a really good second half on Saturday. What will be will be.

He is nothing special and whilst I do not think he will make team at Man U I also think we can well do without him.In recent games he has added little to the play and certainly is not much of a goal threat. I am sure there are other young midfielders we could pick up on permanent contracts who will add equally as much to the squad.Every body said he was a central midfield player but since he was put in that role he has been anonymous in all games.

Might need to go back for physio to his neck having watched the ball consistantly travel from back to front in light of our current playing style!!

He's done OK, without being outstanding. Played well last saturday. Would like to see him do more of those powerful runs from midfield. I'd rather have him than not, & can't see him being good enough for Man Utd 1st team on current showing, so reckon he'll be here until end of season.

MLFoot. You are talking about the exciting spark that we are lacking are you not?

I'm sure MM will think of something if Tunnicliffe returns back to Man U.

bluemingood - what on earth makes you think Taylor can fill any gap. We've seen nothing yet to suggest he can cut it at this level

Really is no loss what so ever.

Tunny works hard for the team, but provides no goal threat or the 'killer pass' at the moment, both items that are desperately needed to push the team to the next stage. I would like Hunt and Edwards (oldies I know) played wide with Scuse and Hyam to complete a 4 man midfield.

fellani injured so they a bit short

we lack a midfielder who can make that telling pass tunnicliffe hasn't made that pass in 20 games so let him go back and let's try plan b, two wide players to get in behind skuse or hyam the engine room and a new midfielder who can pass the ball.

All those that say that Tunni isn't up to Prem standard...I wonder if you were the same who didn't rate a certain winger we had on loan from Tottenham a while back.

The problem is this. He is miles better than Hyam. BUT he is not our player. Could we keep him till end of season? That's basically Moyes' decision. If he stays he has to play ahead of Hyam and in a central role in 4-4-2. I say it again 4-3-3 only works with pacey players. Not Murphy who is slower than a snail or Nouble who tries hard but is limited. I like Tunners but I'm sure MM has others in mind if he does go back.

doesnt do enough in games for me, disappears to often, when he is playing well it is in fits and starts, he may become more consistent as he progresses but we need that consistency NOW.
It doesnt help that all too often the team has a passenger or too in each game. When or if all 11 players play well together then we will have a hell over a side.

Hunt can come in, or Taylor both are more creative of have the potential to be more creative given a run in the side.

Hunt on left - Taylor on Right, Skuse and Hyam in the middle - solid and just a tad more creative than of late ... McG up front with either Frank or Murphy ... until EB is fit.

OR - if we are chasing a game ... play with frank AND Murph up front with McG replacing Hyam in the "middle"

Glade this is Mick's job not mine - it all looks SO easy from here !!!! HAPPY CHRISTMAS ALL !! God bless you.
