Doyle Loan Bid Rebuffed
Wednesday, 29th Jan 2014 11:39

Town boss Mick McCarthy is reported to have failed in a bid to sign his former Wolves striker Kevin Doyle on loan.

According to the Wolverhampton Express & Star the Blues manager made an enquiry regarding the 30-year-old’s availability on loan but was rebuffed by Wolves boss Kenny Jackett, who is keen to keep the Irish international at Molineux as he looks to take his club back into the Championship.

Earlier in the week, Doyle — who came on as a half-time sub in Wolves’ 3-0 win at Oldham last night, his first appearance for more than three weeks - was reported to be close to joining Middlesbrough on loan, while the Blues and Reading were also said to be showing interest.

McCarthy took Doyle, who has been capped 56 times by the Republic of Ireland, scoring 12 goals, to Wolves from Reading for a reported £6.5 million in June 2009.

The former St Patrick’s and Cork City striker is under contract to Wolves until 2015 and is understood to be on wages of around £40,000 a week with the Blues likely to have been proposing to pay only a fraction of that figure. Doyle has scored three goals in 29 games this season.

Speaking on Monday, McCarthy said he wasn't ruling out making further additions before the transfer window closes on Friday with loans or swap deals in his thoughts.

The Town boss's scope for swaps is limited given his relatively small squad, although striker Paul Taylor has featured only fleetingly - and may have come into McCarthy's thoughts when looking at a move for Doyle - and keeper Scott Loach remains out of favour.

Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth may also be made available for loan but not until Luke Hyam is fit or someone else has come in.

Skipper Carlos Edwards was reported to be interesting Wolves earlier in the transfer window, but the League One side subsequently signed another winger, Michael Jacobs, on a permanent basis from Derby after a loan spell in the first half of the season.

No better than MCG, Murph, Taylor, Lee or E Blake. Shed load better than Nouble, but, so am I.

Not sure how much truth there is in this. Don't we have enough strikers? Murphy and McGoldrick are doing well, Taylor and Nouble as back-ups, plus hopefully SEB back soon

£40k a week...in Div One?
That can't be right can it?

We've got enough forward options, where we struggle is making chance for them. We should be looking at wingers/ creative midfielders.

nope, glad this one didn't come off, he's nothing special. Certainly no better than our current strikers (except Nouble of course). Slightly concerned MM is going in for defenders and strikers but no midfielders. C'mon Mick we need some flair in midfield, focus on that please!!

If his contract didn't have some sort of 'relegation wage drop clause' in then it will be right.

Bgexile, he's obviously on a Premier League contract which was signed before they were relegated I would imagine, the problem for Wolves is that nobody is going to pay him that now and why should he leave and go somewhere else on lower wages (I don't mean to us as we would pay say £8k and Wolves would still pick up the remaining £32k per week) until his contract is up. The question really should be was he really worth a £6.5m transfer fee and such high wages in the first place, I'd say no, he's not really that good to be honest.

I'd take Jamie O'Hara. Creative centre midfielder and works hard.

99% of Wolves fans have classed Jamie O'Hara as their worst player... EVER

Not even a shade of the player he used to be, 3 in 29 is awful, especially as he's playing in league 1.

I'd be surprised if this was true. However if it's been reported in the Wolverhampton Express & Star then it must be true.....

Kerryblue- To be fair Steve Bull could probably still do a half decent job, I bet he's still a poacher!

Not really sure on this. I think MM is naturally linked with any wolves player avaialble.

I do think Nouble gets a hard time though, he works hard and has a physical pressence which he needs to learn to use more effectively. Being shifted from club to club has maybe hampered his development and perhaps he just needs to feel settled somehwere, which I hope he gets at Town. If hes given time and thr eight coaching he could turn into a real handfull. If he was firsdt choice I would be worried but he's not and if we see SEB he will slip furthet down the pecking order. When he was at Chelski he was touted as the next Drogba, i know that dosnt mean a whole lot but he must have something about him.

I wouldnt want O'hara, unless his Mrs is going to get drunk and flirty with the fans in which case sign him up!

bluemay77 - ship out a midfielder to bring in a defender? Centre back is one of our lower priority positions for strengthening/ bolstering.

Why is he looking for another striker and possibly getting rid of Taylor?! Taylor has never had the chance to show how good he is but more often than not he gives us signs of his ability when coming off the bench. So frustrating that the guy never seems to get a look in.

Instead of slagging off Nouble, might be nice to get behind our less talented players? just a thought..

If MM really is looking to add another striker to the squad why not bring Jack Marriot back from Gillingham, at 19 he,s not exactly a child is he.

Beattiesballbag added 14:40 - Jan 29
There's no need to panic, MM will add a creative midfielder to the squad when one becomes available at Wolves,
He might be getting on a bit & seen his best days ten years ago but he will be a good hard working & reliable lad..........when he's not receiving treatment!
We just have to learn to be patient,
players with those qualities don't just grow on trees!

No marriots not a child nor a championship player yet if he was MM would play him one day you,ll find out about Taylor to I hope we swap him bad signing not enough research done on him. Be patient this time last year we were sweating on going down Christ we nearly in playoffs with the smallest squad around we have a pretty decent bunch of players yes we do not have the championship equivalent of messi or Suarez but they cost big bucks if you know of one give the club a call

Can't see it. Don't think he's what we need either. We need some creativity in midfield to give McGoldrick and Murphy proper service. Saying that, I can't even begin to think what we'd be like if McGoldrick got injured.

Three goals in 29 games this season?! In division one?! Nouble has only a slightly worse record at a higher level and on considerably less money per week!
