Marriott to Rejoin Woking After Gills Recall
Thursday, 30th Jan 2014 10:20

Town have recalled striker Jack Marriott from his loan spell at Gillingham. Marriott is now set to return to Skrill Premier Woking, where he scored nine goals in nine games during a previous loan spell, for the remainder of the season.

The 19-year-old made only one brief sub appearance for the League One side - in last Friday's 2-1 defeat at Brentford - and Gills boss Peter Taylor says lack of football is the reason the spell has been curtailed.

“The lad wants to play first team games and unfortunately I can’t guarantee him that," he said. "Jack is a good kid and we wish him all the best.”

Marriott tweeted: "Really enjoyed my short time at [Gillingham], great bunch of lads there and a terrific club. I wish them all the best!

"Delighted to be heading back to Woking also, great club and looking forward to playing some games!"

The former academy scholar's only first team experience with the Blues so far came as a sub at Burnley on the final day of last season.

Town right-back Elliott Hewitt remains at the Priestfield Stadium and boss Mick McCarthy has said he's happy for him to stay there for the rest of the campaign to get senior games under his belt.

Freddie Veseli is at Bury and McCarthy has said the Swiss U21 international can remain with the League Two side beyond his initial one-month spell.

Woking would be a stupid idea. He's already proved he's too good for that level.. send him to Portsmouth or something....

Yes quite agree it says he is going back, but it's not done yet.
I think if big mick was looking at Doyle he wants another striker, especially as SEB still isn't fit.
I think Marriott on the bench is a great addition, I think the lad would of been a great addition for the Leeds match a fox in the box to bring the 2-1 result we all wanted!!
I think if Marriott isn't staying Big Mick is looking to ship Taylor for another striker (like for like swap) Mick just doesn't seem to fancy Taylor!
Maybe Doyle for Taylor. But in all honesty I'd rather keep marriott and swap Taylor for O'Hara!!

With no disrespect to Woking, i think, if he went to pretty much any other bottom half league one side or any in league two instead, he could get regular games. Hope to see him with 20 goals for Woking and push on with his development next season.

Boo to Peter Taylor for taking the lad on loan and then not playing him. Would think MM not very happy. Also heard he's playing Hewitt out of position as well (right midfield) so thats not great either because he isn't going to improve his positioning/defending playing there is he?

To me I dont know why mick doesn't look to loan him to another league 1 or 2 club, yes he scored 9 in 9 at woking and gets regular games but why not play at a higher level, that will be the test, producing it at a higher level.

Latest from skysports "We are hearing Leeds midfielder Paul Green is in talks with Ipswich over a possible loan switch to Portman Road after dropping down the pecking order at Elland Road."

Peter Taylor obviously thinks that Akinfatgut is the answer to his striking issues

I think he could easily get games in a league two side, the skrill premier doesn't seem enough of a challenge for him to improve

Pah!..I don't think peter taylor & gillingham knew what they had in their hands there.

Their loss.

"The former academy scholar's only first team experience with the Blues so far came as a sub at Burnley on the final day of last season."

So why on earth doesn't MM give him game time with Town before deciding what's best for Jack and the club? Surely it makes sense to give our own a chance before borrowing another clubs third and fourth choices.

This is worrying.....would you not have expected the two clubs (Gills and Ipswich) to have discussed (before he went there on loan) that he needs to play games...and ensured that he would actually get games there? It's not like Gills have been out and bought another striker and the situation has altered massively! I know it was only a couple of weeks that Jack's been there but this just looks a bit amateurish to me....

Alan- I suspect they did, the deal has been terminated early due the fact that he hasnt. I think going back to Woking is a decent plan. Let the lad get games and get used to teams trying to kick him of the ball. The biggest benift he will get his improving ability to read a game and kearning how to handle himself. The more games he gets the better and I would rather he gets 90mins at woking each wk than 10 off the bench with us. I dont thinks hes champ level yet.

How many people were calling for Jewell to play Hyam?- Such a clamour for him to play and now he's getting regular games most fans seem to slate him most weeks. To much to young and all that. Let Marriot develop,

When I first saw headline on Club website I thought good he is bringing him back as he didn't get Doyle(thank goodness);but then saw he was going back to Woking.
If Spurs Arsenal and Man Utd can play teenagers, as Ipswich have many times in the past especially Robson Royle and Burley;then why cant MM do the same. Not saying start him;but a cameo appearance from the bench?Still he is a Yorkshireman and they are always right!

Bluetone added 15:25 - Jan 30
@ Seasider because MM hasn't got the courage or vision of Robson, Royle or Burley. As you say he is a Yorkshireman think of that typical Yorkshireman Boycott and you are close to the MM mentality

Glad he's been recalled but a little disappointed hes gone back to Woking. It feels a litte bit of a side ways step for him. He proved he'll score at that level in his last spell so I would've liked to see him in League Two or playing every week in League One. Don't think we're going to learn more about him at Woking than we already know.

If he should prove a success at right midfield that would be better still than a fullback.
As he seams to have the attributes for right midfield maybe he is not playing out of position...... just that other managers haven't had the courage or wisdom to play him in the correct position!

waste of time him goin gills take hewitt away as punishment i reckon surely a league club want marriott on loan

Clearly no one in league one or two want to take Marriott on loan, hence why he's gone back to Woking. Do you not think that MM might have tried to offer him out? He's proven he can score goals at that level so the best for his education is that he plays and keeps scoring.

Some of our fans live in a dream world. MM see's him in training and U21 games everyday, if he was good enough now to be on our bench, I'm sure he would be.

Peter Taylor is a good manager, who clearly felt Marriott was not the right option for Gillingham at ths time. So why do people think es ready to play for us? I trust Mick with this one.
