Town Confirm Green Loan Signing
Saturday, 8th Feb 2014 08:53

Town have confirmed the signing of Leeds United midfielder Paul Green on a 93-day loan. Yesterday evening, TWTD revealed that the Blues were close to completing a deal to sign the 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international.

Also as reported, the club say Green will be available for today’s game if the paperwork goes through before the noon deadline, and if that’s the case he will be in the squad at Barnsley.

Yesterday afternoon, TWTD revealed the Blues had renewed their interest in Green, having pulled out of a deal on the final day of the January transfer window with the Whites wanting Town to pay too great a proportion of his wages.

Speaking last Saturday, the Blues manager didn’t rule out making a new attempt to sign Green on a 93-day emergency loan, but said he would also look at other options.

Former Town man Owen Garvan was amongst those eyed, although his ongoing patellar tendinitis may have meant that move was viewed as too risky, while an agreement regarding wages may again have been difficult.

Green, who will wear the number 16 shirt, was previously linked with the Blues during Paul Jewell’s time as boss, the former Town manager having signed him during his spell at Derby.

The Pontefract-born midfielder started his career with Doncaster Rovers, joined Derby on a free transfer in the summer of 2008 and then moved on to Leeds in June 2012, signing a two-year deal. He has been capped 20 times by Ireland, scoring once.

The 5ft 9in tall Green has made 42 starts and four sub appearances during his time with Leeds, scoring four goals, one in last season's 2-0 defeat of the Blues at Elland Road.

Green hasn’t played a first team game for the Whites since October, having suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty in November but returned to training in January.

Didn't look very far at other options. Plus I thought Mick wanted to see more goals from midfield, smacks of being the same as what we have already got, a very hard, workman like midfield, with no creativity, flair or goals. Plus having said no in the first place and making a big thing about it ( let him sit in the stands for all I care line) its made him look pretty stupidgoing back. None the less welcome paul, play your part in pushing for top 6

42 caps for Leeds in 2 years and a Ireland internatioal means he is obviously no mug. Give him 3-4 games to settle and get used to playing and he will be decent for us. Mick ovbiously rates him so that shouod be good enough for anyone. Still time if Mick feels we need a young and hungry Prem player but experience is what is needed at the moment. Some people just will never be happy until we sign Messi or Ronaldo for the midfield role..

The picture of him on the itfc facebook page has him wearing the captains armband whilst at Leeds so he must at some point have been held in high regard.

Welcome on board PG!

@jimmy86 how do you know how many option MM looked at? And it wasn't Green who said no in the transfer window it was Leeds wanting too much (or more than we could afford) of his salary paid for by Town.

Messi OR Ronaldo? That's the trouble with Ipswich, no ambition. Let's get them both in!

Give the man a chance boys and girls before we hang him out to dry. Welcome to the mighty town.

Im certainly not going to question Mick over this as frankly hes done miracles with the squad he has and lack of financial backing.

@fat boy tim my only point is mick was really quite emphatic with regards to his comments on the story regarding the deal breaking down. Possibly more the club's fault than green I admitt but once you have been that hard line then thats that in my book. If you then go back you look foolish

He's got a better goal scoring record than Tabb, Skuse and Hyam. On a different note has anyone else noticed how often Leeds are on Sky, 10 games including the games listed till March matched only by Q.P.R.

@Jimmy86 - the point of taking a hard line is to force the other party to make concessions, which they obviously did in this case. In Mick we trust!
