McCarthy Delighted to Sign "Good Character" Green
Monday, 10th Feb 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with Paul Green’s debut from the bench during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Barnsley and also to have added the 30-year-old Leeds midfielder to his squad on a 93-day loan.

The Town manager revealed that Green, who came close to scoring a last-minute winner when his close range strike from Stephen Hunt’s cross was blocked, completed the formalities of his move on Friday evening with the paperwork rubber-stamped by noon on Saturday so he could take a place on the bench at Oakwell.

“He met us at the hotel and had a medical there,” McCarthy said. “I thought he was excellent during the time he had on.

“He was very unfortunate, was it a block or a save? But he was in the box and nearly got the winner for us.

“He’ll be good for us Greeny, he’s a good character. He’s got a bit of quality, he’s certainly got energy, he’s got a goal in him and he’s an experienced, 30-year-old central midfield player, and we don’t have many of them.

“And he’s a proper character, the same as Frazer Richardson. Not that old, around 30 years of age, they’re both good characters, it gives us a lovely bit of experience.”

McCarthy says that if the spell goes well, it could lead to a longer term stay with Green’s Leeds terms up at the end of June: “Like anybody who is out of contract, who comes in. He’s looking for a deal somewhere and if he does it with us, why not?”

Meanwhile, on-loan right-back Freddie Veseli and Bury’s game at Torquay succumbed to the weather, while Jack Marriott’s Woking weren’t scheduled to play and Elliott Hewitt served a one-match ban as Gillingham won 2-1 at Carlisle following his red card in midweek.

Elsewhere, Town's U18s returned to action for the first time since Christmas but were beaten 2-0 at Millwall.

"Good character" seems to be a key requirement for MM, and who can say he is wrong. Leads one to think that there may well be more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye regarding a certain other ongoing ITFC saga. I think Green will do well for us. MM hasn't made too many mistakes so far. The proof of the pudding is 7th place in the table on a very low budget.

Very good player.Should add quality to the midfield. The squad is getting stronger without Mick spending any money. We are very lucky to have a manager of his quality considering there is very little ,if any money at all to spend.IT will be a great achievement to get into the play-offs this season, but if we don't then next season will be the one.In Mick we Trust.COYB.

I agree Steve, MM signings have been mostly good when you consider what came before. He looks first and foremost for a player that works hard and has the right attitude and its working. He has been given no money and done incredibly well considering. 9-10th place finish or upwards is success this season.

Totally agree - MM has , probaby with exception of FN bought the right type of players who will add something . Especially in the middle of the park
It is always a balance between buying a creative player vs a 'worker'- hard to find one who is both !
Chelsea- Mourinho didnt fancy Mata - World class player that he is cos he didnt put in a shift
I am sure MM will look at a creative type now he has right 'characters'
In a team sport , esp in the Championship that can count for far more than creative types who dont work back
Looking forward to next few months and final push and if we come in Top 8-10 I think it is a great achievement on NO MONEY and considering where we were 14 months ago !
Build for next season

Great to see so many sensible posts. Mick has put together a squad that works hard for each other and doesn't get beaten without putting up a good fight. Add to that a forward like Mcgoldrick (how much is he worth now???) and its all looking so much more positive. Its an interesting thing about flair players though...I used to love watching Reuser but he was often left on the bench. and there have been others, Bobby Petta springs to mind, who could be brilliant but not the manager's cup of tea.

Had a chat with a Gillingham fan Saturday night , he stated that he thought Elliot Hewitt had been there player of the month in January and contrary to some posts on here he had not been played out of position. We also spoke about Jack Marriot leaving after his first appearance all be it a brief one , and that if he had stayed there he would probably got more games as in those 15 minutes he looked a hand full, I know people will say they should have played him earlier , but surely you have to earn your place , and he done enough in that short period to deserve a crack. And moving so early was a bit strange

Don't know what game Mick was watching. Green was gasping for air 5 minutes after coming on and missed a sitter to make it 3-2.He had the whole goal to aim at 10 yards out and blasted it at the keepers feet! However, just his presence was 10x more useful than Jay Tabb.

Agree with steve Itfc. Does seem to be one of mick's priorities and I suspect this is the issue regarding taylor, despite the fact ability wise he should be in the starting 11 every week. People are too influenced by character. What players do off the pitch is their business, if they break the law, Taylor's assault case and carlos's driving conviction being 2 examples they get dealt with like any normal member of the public. To me I dont care what their character is like or what they do off the pitch, what I care about is what they do on it!! And ability wise Taylor is streets ahead of nouble

Yer we must run with the good characters that Mick wants suppose we have had enough of the Bowyer's Bullards Chopra's ect. Lets hope these characters can mount a big challenge nexy season if we dont make it this.

Michael - I wasn't at the game and this week didn't even get to listen on the radio, so I am talking blind.... forgive me I get this wrong!!

Green clearly didn't hit the net and you clearly think he should have, but Mick's comments REALLY encourage me (repeat, having NOT seen or heard the game so i cannot disagree with you or him) ...

“He was very unfortunate, was it a block or a save? But he was in the box and nearly got the winner for us."

Mick and all the fans may agree with you that he could have scored - maybe even that he SHOULD have scored - but what encourages me is the phrase "BUT HE WAS IN THE BOX AND NEARLY GOT THE WINNER FOR US" .... midfield players in the box? Players shooting when they get chance? What ever next?

Things are steadily building. We all want quicker results, but patience will pay off - maybe not with a play off (this year) but if this rate of progress continues ......

COME ON YOU BLUES !

And besides - better a former Leeds player than a Leeds player ... at least we've done him a big favour that he will want to repay !!

(and that from me, a Yorkshireman by birth!)

@RaymondovicBlue

You're absolutely right mate. I'm glad that he could be the midfielder to enter the box and score goals as we're massively lacking that kind of player. I just didn't think he was excellent when he came on like Mick says. Looked massively unfit and didn't really do anything. Hopefully he can get his fitness levels up and be a key part of the rest of our season though!

well lets see what happens in the next few weeks, i think you need a good mix of workhorses and flair and talent, because if you backs are against the wall and you need someone to quickly unlock the defence and put themselves or put a player through thats what wins you games esp against the better sides and you get them on the counter attack, i though taylor put one hell of a shift in against qpr tracking back and defending aswell as some quality ball play aswell, i think mick has brought in some good additions to the team, noube was and still is a very cheep gamble, but he just doesnt cut it, at this level, will be good experiance for marriot and hewitt this year and i think will be chomping at the bit next season for us and i belive from what ive seen they will make it easily, i will be glad of a top ten finish this year and a promotion push for next year

The thing is how do you know if a signing is a mistake until they play for you. Nouble looked exciting and is still young and learning his trade.
Chopra was hailed as the best thing since sliced bread by many on here but cost the club a fortune. Yet if we had not signed him the posts on here would have been lack of ambition , Evans is too tight etc.
Yet MM has proved that by getting the correct players you can build a team on not much money, very similar to a certain Bobby Robson who had a team of players who were never big stars but will go down in history as the greatest town players.
How many times do we hear about the great games in the champion league and how a Man U or Chelsea player has scored his 5th goal in 12 games but never talk about John Warks achievement and some of towns great games in the 80's

Feel it is too early to comment on Paul Green, but Phil says he scuffed the shot he had, straight at the keeper.
With regards Paul Taylor, from the limited amount any of us has seen him play, feel he does put in a good 'shift';and anybody is better than the hapless Nouble!
All Managers, even the great late Sir Bob make the occasional poor signing, and most including me,feel that Mick has done very well considering the very limited amount of transfer money he has been given.
Only once in the last 25 years has less been spent, apart from the years following administration when between 28 Oct 2002 and 10 Dec 2004 big Joe didn't/couldn't spend a penny!!!

With the FFP rules town are in a good position.
Town were spending money and looking like a league one side, now we are a side who have chance of play off place, even if we don't we have come on in leaps and bounds.
However the players we have signed don't play for nothing, those signed must cost the club between 50k to 100k a week that's a possible 5million a year and the players released did not save the club that amount.
With the club paying a reported 14million in 1st team wages, I would be amazed if the gate receipts even cover the wages.
We all seem to forget that there are other people who make the club tick, ie cleaners, programme sellers etc o and then there is the electric bill, ground rent etc

Totally agree with what Jimmy86 and Steve ITFC have mentioned - no coincidence that the term 'Good character' with Paul Green has been used just at the time we're all wondering what's going on regarding Paul Taylor.

We are in a great position with 16 games to go (hopefully 3 more),and with the added bonus of SEB still to come (should be this weekend),I really think he is the one that's going to catapult us to the top 6 and make our play off dream a reality, come on SEB and COYB..................
