McCarthy: Keeper Decision Not Difficult
Monday, 24th Feb 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says it wasn’t a difficult decision to recall Dean Gerken in goal in place of Scott Loach ahead of Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Leicester but admitted it was a harder task to tell the former England U21 international that he had been left out.

Loach had put in a man of the match display in last week’s 0-0 home draw with Blackpool, regular first-choice Gerken having been sidelined with a neck problem.

“Gerks has been great, that’s my feelings about it,” McCarthy said. “It’s not difficult to make the decision but it’s difficult to tell Loachy because he played really well.

“He might think he’s got a chance and I would hope he has. What I would say to him is ‘Make sure that next time you get in you play exactly the same, as well as you did against Blackpool and next time you might stay in’.”

Regarding his decision to replace injured top scorer David McGoldrick with Frank Nouble rather than Paul Taylor or Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, he added: “Frank’s been in the team, he’s played when we’ve had three up front. He’s been the one that’s been next in line.

“Sylvan did really well when he came on for half an hour but being on for half an hour and being on for 90 minutes and starting the game is a different ball game, as we know. Tayls hasn’t [been starting games], Frank’s been the next one in line, so he got the nod.”

Ebanks-Blake is set to start for the U21s when they take on Crystal Palace at Portman Road this evening (KO 7pm).

Meanwhile, Foxes manager Nigel Pearson said striker David Nugent had, unsurprisingly, been keenly anticipating the chance to add to his remarkable total of goals against the Blues.

The one-time England man netted Leicester's second of the afternoon in the 31st minute to claim his 14th goal in 13 games against Town and his sixth in five matches for the Foxes against his favourite opponents.

“He was looking forward to playing against Ipswich again," Pearson said. "I don’t suppose they were too keen! I don’t know why these things happen, in all honesty.”

He added: “Whenever you play against one of Mick’s sides you know it’s going to be a tough game but I think we’ve proved so far this season that we’ve found the answer to a lot of a problems that we’ve encountered and again we’ve been able to do that. It was another very good three points.”

Poor Scott. It seems that nothing short of Gerken getting pregnant will result in him getting the No.1 spot back.

MM should be manager of Northampton Town FC. He is talking absolute COBBLERS!!!!

I can't be bothered to go into my thoughts on the play well and you'll play debate as I'd be wasting my time, MM has his favourites and that's that!!

What MM is actually saying is, no matter how well you play Loachy, gerks will always replace you as i rate gerks as better than you ! simply sends the wrong message, if the other players saw scott keep his place it would surely tell them to play well and you will stay in the team. All this says is MM will always start his favourites.

As other poster stated above, Recall Marriot, MM is imo, saying and doing some strange decisions ?

Very harsh on Loach. Sounds as if his time here might be coming to an end, if he wants to play regularly

Tayls hasn't been in the side and Nouble's been getting the nod….but why? It's not the right decision.
Don't mind if Nouble comes on for a blowing Ebanks-blake after 60 minutes but he's diner nothing to warrant a start. Taylor and Blake to start this weekend. Its a given.

Neither of them are good enough in my book, but very unfair on Loach. Is it me is MM starting to lose the honest and straight forward approach of the past? I always thought his honesty was a breath of fresh air but.......'Tabby was different class' etc has been baffling recently.

I didn't go to the game but friends did and said he was terrible - thing is he isn't kept on his toes as no matter what he does (or loach does) he gets picked!!!! How does this and the inclusion of Nouble say to others play well and you may get and stay in the team? To me it says I'm stubborn and will stick to my guns whatever!

A lot on here saying poor man management just because Loach had a good game and was dropped to the bench.
Surely it's also bad man management to drop your number one just because he got injured and the number two had one good game.
Don't remember many on here voting for Loach as MOTM in the two games against Preston,
Oops sorry forgot Loach is blue he has Ipswich in his veins he is one of us, well so am I but you would not want me in goal.
Sivell was a good keeper but never remember all this when he was dropped for Cooper to return, o wait that's right there was no internet then

loach is surely on his way in the summer. mick wants gerken to feel loved so that a) he plays to his maximum for the rest of this season and b) when he signs a top keeper/promising youngster in the summer that takes gerken's place next year he'll be alright sitting on the bench without chucking his toys out because he knows he's rated. pretty good man management i'd say, and forward-thinking, which is a lot more than i can say for some of our recent managers

May be it is that he did not sign Loach or Taylor ????? so he puts them on the back burner behind his FAVOURITES ??????
Come on MM fair is fair,,, fans are starting to get unsettled now !!!!!!!!

With decisions like this McCarthy will lose the dressing room. MM's pet-players 11 is going to see to that.
The more his selections are looking wrong the more stubborn he gets.
Be interesting to see the season ticket take-up if this persists to the end of the season.

Agree with Karlos. If Gerks had been out for 6 games or more, say and Loach had been perfect then maybe he should get the nod.

But the last game told us nothing more than we knew already. Loach is capable of fine performances. but as it was only one game it can tell us nothing about his consistency which is why Mick doesn't fancy him.

Back in the day when Wright came in for Forest, I doubt even he would have stauyed in the team after the performance against Blacburn had Forest only been out for one game.

On strikers I would rather SEB started. To the extent that Nouble adds something I think he is better as a sub.

But we should also recognise that it is this consistency of decision making that makes players want to sign for McCarthy.

Spot on Britanniaman - MM will play 'his players' first - There is no other logical explanation as to why you would play Nouble .. I have really tried to see what he adds
On Saturday seeing him and DM out on the left wing getting in each others way summed it up for me

Like other posters have said I think it is poor management. Loach produced a man of the match display to keep the seasiders at bay, in particular the impressive faroun, who incidentally was available on a free, but doubt we didnt even look at him, coz he does more than just run around. Mick's stance on why taylor isn't getting games ahead of nouble is if you get in the the team, play well enough to keep your place for the next game, well im pretty certain loach did that and still got dropped. But then ya get the likes of nouble and tabb, who no matter how badly they play seem to get picked again. Seems mick contradicted himself with regards to that policy with loach, but not his favourites

What is with the handbags at dawn in this thread? Geez.

Goalkeeper selection is a dilemma at every single football club, and we are no different. But trying to turn this into Mick's crusade against those who aren't 'his players' is getting a bit stupid now. Naturally he will have players who he believes fits his style, but at least he is consistent in that.

Loach is clearly a decent goalie who will be a good replacement if Gerkin really begins to lose is (a mistake here or there doesn't count) but those here who seem to think he is our Petr Cech have very short memories.

Why has it taken people so long to work out MM , he has been picking his favourites all season which I highlighted was the fact Taylor was sent on loan nothing to do with lack of fitness MM could have done exactly the same as he is doing with SEB ?
Nouble / Tabb are poor to say the least . Skuse / Hyam partnership creates nothing .
Tunnicliffe added nothing wide or in the centre . Green is another poor signing .Berra has split up the cente back partnership that saved us last season and added no more in reality .
JET must be laughing his head off at the players that have replaced him on our right flank as he was considered not good enough !!

I have no problem with MM picking his favourites, because they are probably his favourites for a good reason. But, when the favourites doesn't stand up as they should, they should be dropped. This is not the case right now. It seems to be too much the "works hard in training" kind of player who gets chosen, no matter how bad they play when it really matters.

Thank you someone without blue tinted glasses on, it only because he is a local lad.
He is an average keeper really , I am not anti Loach, would not bother me if he was in goal, However I feel Gerken is a better keeper

Loach average is 6.1 gerkens is 6.7 these are the fans ratings on TWTD
Gerken was given 3 MOTM in 5 games plus his MOTM against Bolton all by TWTD readers
Loach was in goal for the Preston replay and was scored a 4.0
Loach has a good game against Blackpool and MM is a poor man manager

Wonder how many minus votes I will get now get a grip people it's what Loach is paid to do and we will always have a number 2
This reminds about the Lewis and Supple debate

I am a big MM fan and think he has worked wonders however I don't wear rose tinted glasses so happy to have a moan when I feel necessary! Still like and respect him as a manager and feel we could be doing an awful lot worse! Like any manager he has his a achilies heel that's all... Not a big fan of Nouble but I also don't think that Taylor should necessary start if his attitude is all wrong (which is possible reading between the lines). We do however need a more attacking force both in midfield and now upfront as we have lost our one true threat on goal.
