Town Set to Sign Palace Midfielder
Wednesday, 26th Feb 2014 21:45

Town are reportedly set to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams on loan. The 20-year-old Wales international impressed and scored the first goal for the Eagles’ U21s in Monday’s 2-1 victory over their Blues counterparts at Portman Road.

According to the South London Press Town have fought off competition from Charlton — who were represented at Monday’s game — to land Williams.

Born in Kent, 5ft 6in tall Williams came through the youth system at Selhurst Park and made his senior debut in August 2011.

Since then he has gone on to make 27 starts and 37 sub appearances, scoring one goal, but has not started a Premier League game since the Eagles' promotion last summer. In September he suffered an ankle injury which sidelined him for two months.

Highly-rated Williams, who recently signed a new contract with Palace until the summer of 2018, was a constant threat on the left of midfield on Monday and can also operate in the centre and on the right.

Qualifying via his father, Williams has won four full Wales caps in addition to having played at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

Meanwhile, former Blue Connor Wickham has joined Leeds on loan from Sunderland.

It's the man with defence splitting balls.

Not a goal threat then, trying hard to understand why we didn't bring Wickham back with Dids out. Our other strikers are not up to it.

Haven't seen much of him this season but saw him a couple of times last year and he looked pretty decent. Hopefully if Monday's anything to go by then he's got a goal in him too!!

Sounds very promising. Let's hope it's true, he joins us & MM utilises him in his best role rather than him being changed into a defensive midfielder clone

He was great for Palace last season, would have no problem with this, as long as it doesnt mean Green spending the rest of the season on the wing.

May be wrong but think he scored an absolute screamer earlier on in the season. Most effect at CAM though,

Anyone got a step-ladder? Or can Tabb sit on his shoulders to make a regular sized midfielder?

Debatable whether he will suit our style (often kick and rush), but he's a classy player. Good news.

At least Tabb will have someone who he can see eye to eye with.

@Garv

Lets hope he doesn't fit our style as lately our style has bored the pants off me!!

Anyway, Ryan who??

Guess he might go straight in at centre half then.

Can't believe Wickham keeps getting mentioned, since when was he a potent goalscorer, 8 million quid flop.......end of story.

Yes, finally an attacking minded CM with an eye for goal!

That makes sense then! now we've nothing to play for we're going to be very helpful & give Palace's youngsters experience & game time to learn how to defend, while we send our own youngsters out to the lower divisions to gain experience in attacking football.
I'm sure if he was one of our players he would be to young to small & to blond to get game time here!

give up on the Wickham link, just because you want it to happen makes no difference. We need a creative midfielder and if this happens then it's good news. Up voted Ericclacton as he needed this news ;)

If he is "the man with defence splitting balls" we will now find out if Nouble has got what it takes or whether he is a figment of McCarthy's imagination.

This is great news, great player who will drive the play forward positively and encourage a more footballing style through his natural play, just the ticket for blake!

Him and Skuse sounds very decent.

Class player and in any other championship team would be an excellent signing. However I can't see how he would fit into it as Mick wouldn't dare break up the hard working no quality which is our central midfield. Reckon he'd be used out on the right as I believe that position is up for grabs or most likely hell be deployed 20 minutes from the end once we're 1 or 2 nil down and chasing the game (I.E Taylor). In a 4-3-3 he'd be goldust and our playoff hopes could be back on, in a 4-4-2 system doubt he would get a game. Quality player at this level no two ways about it

I know Palace are a selling side, but a contract until 2018 means he will cost if we decide to buy, so I assume that's not the plan and it's just a 6 month loan with no prospect of a buy? If Palace stay up maybe they will want to sell I guess. Didn't I read they had the biggest number of players on the books but not in the squad in the Premiership?

Sorry to be pessimistic but, MMs actually managed to find a player even shorter than tabb:O

He will and should replace Tabb! Joniesta (As some Wales and Palace fans call him) has good pace, skill and passing. will be a good Prem player when he reaches his prime, if MM only uses him as back up he's a melt coz he has the one thing we mainly need PACE.
