McCarthy: Ending Emergency Loans Would Cause Mayhem
Tuesday, 4th Mar 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says FIFA’s plans to scrap the Football League’s emergency loan provision will cause “mayhem” if they are implemented. The system, unique to English football, which allows clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two to loan players for up to 93 days outside the transfer windows, is set to be scrapped at the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

McCarthy says the loan system was debated by the League Managers Association last week: “I had a discussion with the LMA about it the other night, where teams are going, loans, does the loan system work and should it be continued.

“All these questions are getting asked because FIFA are not completely happy with the loan system, but I think it’s the lifeblood of some clubs that you can actually get players. I think it’s the lifeblood of players actually because I think the U21s league is absolutely pants.

“I think it’s not done anything that a reserve team league wouldn't have done and if you’re over 21, OK, you can play three overage players, but where do you get your football if you can’t play in the U21s league? Where do you play?

“The next thing is to go out on loan and going out on loan, as we’ve seen with Jack Marriott, is hugely beneficial to the players.

“Like a lot of us, if we need to go and get players, then the loan system’s a really good way of doing it.”

Dialogue between the Football League and FIFA continues regarding some form of short-term loan system, but if nothing is put in place McCarthy warns that there will be chaos: “If they close the loan window I think that it’ll cause mayhem.”

He admits Town had too many loanees last season but says the Blues have needed the smaller number of temporary additions they have made this year: “We had nine last season and that was just far too many. This year we’ve had what’s been the necessity.

“We’ve needed to get players in, Ryan Tunnicliffe was a really good loanee and Jonny Williams I’m sure will be.

“Frazer Richardson has come in as back-up and he’s been terrific and now Greeny. But we need them, we’ve still only got 18 fit players, so we need them for the squad.”

He says the LMA discussions centred around some of the relationships which have developed between particular clubs: “There were things mentioned, Swindon and Tottenham, for instance, the tie-up there. There were a few managers there and we were just discussing it.

“It could go that way, it’s sort of going that way anyway where Premier League clubs have got feeder clubs. Tottenham and Swindon have got that tie-up and it’s almost a feeder club.

“Some clubs, and that includes us, would have found it difficult without loanees like Tunnicliffe, Green and Frazer Richardson. We’ve been fortunate that we’ve been able to take loan players.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy, speaking in a lengthy interview in the Irish Sunday Independent has revealed he was contacted about the Ireland job when it became vacant earlier in the season, although "not directly" by the FAI.

"I just got a call asking if I'd be interested," he explained. "And I said 'Well I'm never going to say I'm not'. But that was as far as it went."

It would have been horrible for town if we would have had no emergency loans seasons past. However at the same time without it would mean clubs have to utilise the or youths which leaves me on the fence on the issue. I do feel youth players have a much harder time to get a game now than a few years ago (unless they are clearly amazing players) Given a total agreement that the under 21 league is a step backwards from reserves I feel an end to emergency loans might actually be a good thing if it means more home grown players can potentially flourish

To be honest, without the loan system you can still sign players who are out of contract such as Hunt and SEB.

There should be NO loan system at any time, for any team / player. McCarthy is talking rubbish : 18 players? We have at least 25 registered with squad numbers, and those fringe players / youngsters are who we should be falling back on when we need cover for injuries etc.

Im all for loans, but the 'emergency' loans seem pointless!
If u cant sort you business out by the end of jan, loan or permanent, than should be it!
Teams would have to use there youths and fringe players which would be better than the U21 league, which could be a proper reserves league again!!

Lets go back to just having a Number 12 - Mick Lambert on the bench and no one else !!

would be easier and more ethical to scrap loans altogether in my book.....

It would mean giving the likes of Marriott,Wordsworth,Hewitt,Lawrence etc etc a chance of first team football..surely that wouldn't be a bad thing Mick?

Burley would've had these as first team regulars by now but then he was far more imaginative.

I'm sure one of our own youngsters could have sat on the bench just as well as Frazer Richardson has.

I was told, but haven't authenticated it, that Chelsea have 43 players out on loan. How can that be good for the health of football? Loans primary exist because the economics of football are all wrong. A Freudian slip caused me to type ethics rather tan economic. maybe that is more accurate!

Daleyitfc is 100% corrext scrap it altogether.
mcarthy should be using our younger players and its stupid to be loaning out a RB in hewitt and loaning in F richardson in the same position-it makes a mockery of the transfer window and i think if clubs are really down to the bare bones stick a youngster in even if he is 17-18

kind of agree with most of the above. if you suddenly lose all 3 Goal keepers to injury / illness then you would need an "emergency loan" - however loading in a RB to replace one that you have sent out is hardly an "emergency" is it? Does make a mockery of the whole system.
Who knows what gem you may unearth if you are forced to throw a youngster in?!

In theory the loan system is a nonsense. But the transfer window is an even bigger nonsense. Footballers work under contracts which effectively place them at the whims and fancies of the manager they work for. Of course they are well paid and some would say most are paid to do nothing. But they are fit young sportsmen who want to play. Why should a player be denied from pursuing his ambitions with an alternative employer when his current club does not give him the opportunity? Clubs, particularly Premiership Clubs, collect players like a philatelist collects stamps. Chelsea and Crystal Palace notoriously have more players in their employ than they can ever use. At some stage employment laws will be updated to allow players to move to other clubs at any time, subject to the agreement of the clubs involved and the fulfilment of any contract in place. This would obviate the need for a loan system and would make clubs more enlightened employers. If the loan system has to end, the transfer window must end also. Otherwise the richer clubs will contract players purely to prevent from playing for anyone else.

Scrap this stupid transfer window and loan system altogether. Sky and premier league has got a lot to answer for. Media circus Rubbish

The loan system perpetuates the trend for the richer clubs getting richer at the expense of the poorer clubs. It should be scrapped altogether.

Blue041273 - Don't you think buying players to prevent them going to rivals is exactly what some clubs are doing now? I agree with you about transfer windows and loan systems but players sign for clubs that are interested in them. They choose to sign for clubs like Chelsea sometimes knowing that they are unlikely to become first choices but presumably for the kudos and the wages. The Fair Play rules may help given time, but I question whether they go far enough. A cap on the number of players any club may have might help spread the talent around and bring back more skill and less chequebook into running clubs.

No loans mean better squads it's called planning for the season, if you need loan players each every season, your simply not doing your job as a Manager

....... get real people - as much as we don't necessarily agree with it in principal, Club's would find it extremely difficult without it. That's the reality of it all.

FIFA don't impress me with some of their ideas - typical of another suggestion from people who scarcely know what they're doing.

On this occassion I agree totally with MM.

Yes, agree that is what is happening now, and it will become worse if and when the loan system is abolished. Of course players will sign for top clubs for kudos and/or cash and nothing can be done to change that fact, but currently players (and often their host clubs) have the best of both worlds; they may not be under consideration at their host clubs but can still go and play for another while still enjoying the benefits of their contracts. On the face of it everybody's interests are served. The main point I was making was that if the transfer window was opened to allow transfers at any time during the season then there would not be any need for a loan system. After all no business can thrive if it cannot hire/fire as it seems fit (given lawful considerations). OK there may be a need to enforce contracts but if the loan system is abolished there will be a huge number of good players denied the chance of playing for anyone. What good is that?
