Murphy Wins 10th Cap as Sub
Wednesday, 5th Mar 2014 21:54

Daryl Murphy won his first Republic of Ireland cap since August 2008 as a late sub but was unable to prevent his side from falling to a 2-1 friendly defeat to Serbia in Dublin.

The 30-year-old picked up his 10th cap from the bench in the 73rd minute, while Blues loanee Paul Green was an unused sub.

Elsewhere, Jonny Williams won his fifth full cap as Wales beat Iceland 3-1 in Cardiff, the on-loan Crystal Palace man replacing Gareth Bale for the final 18 minutes.

Town centre-half Christophe Berra was an unused sub as Scotland beat Poland 1-0 in Warsaw.

Right-back Elliott Hewitt, who is on loan at Gillingham for the rest of the season, was a late call into the Wales U21s squad which lost 1-0 to England in a Euro 2015 qualifier at Derby but also didn't make it on to the pitch.

Pleased for Murph. Can't believe Christophe Berra isn't first choice CB for Scotland. He's been class for us this season. Looking forward to seeing Williams at Middlesbrough on Saturday too. Been a while since we had so many internationals to look out for.

I am a massive Scotland fan and watched the game and there was not an opportunity for Berra to get on. We played quite defensive and Gordon wanted to keep the back 4 the same to complete the win and a great Scotland performance.
