McCarthy Expecting Williams Exit
Saturday, 29th Mar 2014 18:06

Boss Mick McCarthy says he expects Crystal Palace not to extend Jonny Williams’s one-month loan with Town when it expires on Monday.

However, he'd be delighted if Eagles boss Tony Pulis — who watched Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Derby — were to allow the 20-year-old to stay at Portman Road and hopes their 1-0 win against Chelsea today might have made a difference to their plans.

“I thought it would be a certainty that they’d take him back the way he played, to be honest with you,” McCarthy admitted.

“I thought he’d be going. I thought it was a knock-on certainty and the only chance that he doesn’t go back is if their result today has made everybody think slightly differently.

“Maybe Tony feels that way. I’ll certainly be having a chat with him. He’s not our player and you’re always in danger of losing one [who is on loan]."

The Blues boss says it’s no surprise that the Portman Road faithful have taken to Williams: “Why wouldn’t they, he’s been terrific. It’s much maligned the loan window but why would you deprive him of playing, a player like that?

“He comes out and he plays for a Championship side and he rips it up and it inspires us and it inspires him.

“If he does go back he’ll be enthused by it, and he’ll do exactly the same in the Premier League, by the way, I’ve no doubt.

“As much as it’s much maligned, I think it’s great for young players like him to come out and play what is far more meaningful football than the U21 league, and you know my feelings on that. We’ll see.”

How far does he think the Wales international can go in the game? “Anything he wants to do, Jonny, he’s got terrific ability. As long as he doesn’t get kicked off the pitch all the time, and he takes a few bumps.

“He’ll be a top player because he has the right attitude towards it. He plays with a smile on his face and he’s brave. He’s brave with the ball, he’s brave without the ball and it’s been lovely to have him around. Hopefully we’ll keep him, but I suspect we might not.”

Well if that's the case Mick your going to have to find a plan B from the last week or so, Wordsworth has to come back in and maybe even Taylor rather than being left out in the doldrums as Skuse, Anderson, Tabb, Hyam etc won't get the job done in terms of getting the opposition on the back foot!

Not down to Mick unfortunately!

An extension would include a 24 hour recall. So with Crystal Palace beating Chelsea today. perhaps he can stay for another game or so.

palace will not get relagated after todays result why let williams warm thier bench when he will definatly play the remaining games here not just for our benefit but the player himself. he wants to stay and play

Perhaps the answer is to allow him to stay but have 24 hour recall. That way Pullis can get him at any time but we can continue to play him until then!

I think we should just let Williams go!
At the end of the day we should be building for, next season and use players like Wordsworth rather than give game time to benefit another club!!
Let's be honest, visions of promotion are a long, long way off !

Williams' spell here has showed us what is missing in our squad in terms of being a solid top 6 team. Somehow, in the summer, Mick could really do with finding someone with that spark.

Seeing as how well the crowd have taken to Williams, Gio and err.. Alan Mahon over the years, it's a pity we haven't been able to unearth our own little gem.

If Williams leaves, then sadly so do our chances of the top 6. As others point out, players like him in our midfield is what's lacking if we want to be genuine contenders. We need creativity in midfield and frankly he's the only one capable of providing it. In recent games Hunt has shown why he doesn't deserve a new contract, whilst Anderson has been equally as poor.

I agree Williams has shown us what we have been missing. Just seeing a midfielder score a goal was a bonus! Let's try to find a creative midfielder in the summer, and work on developing such talent through our academy.

Without Wordsworth Williams was only half as effective to-day. The only real playmaker in the side ended up being provoked and getting booked.

Wordsworth should be properly fit and be ready to play in every game.......like the others. We were a completely different team with him playing so it was a relief to come away with a draw to-day.

Don't knock MM over this. I expect to see Wordsworth back next match. Skusey was not impressive to-day.

I agree with tractor brezzer I think if palace had lost he would have gone back but with the win he will stay with a call back

offer palace a 23.5 hour call back

@tractor brezzer and billm : or maybe it's just the other way around. If Palace feel the team is "safe", he can be given a chance to get a taste of the premiership and they can test him and see if he can make it at that level.

Every summer we go searching for a Williams type, so do all the other Clubs, the only chance we'd have would be overseas, but over the last number of years we simply having got a friggin clue in that department..

Shame if he goes back, he's a match winner, you always have a chance with a player like him...just wanted to hear Mick say 'he's not quite ready for the Premiership yet, he needs games and playing here gives him that, I can see him being terrific in the Premiership next season' ...:)

It's shame he was out best midfielder by miles

Crystal Palace have Tom Ince surely he is further up the pecking order. He was an unused sub against Chelsea.

I agree with the 24 hour re-call. He needs games, and sitting on the bench for palace won't improve him as a player. But as it's been said before, it's out of 'MickMa's' hands
