McCarthy: Every Chance Skipper Could Move On
Tuesday, 1st Apr 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy has admitted that it’s likely that skipper Carlos Edwards will leave the club in the summer. The 35-year-old, who joined Millwall on loan last Thursday, is out of contract in the summer.

“Nothing’s been decided totally but there’s every chance that could happen, he’s out of contract,” McCarthy said.

“It always appears one-sided that, that the club allows somebody to come out of contract. But actually, as I’ve explained to one or two of them, while everybody’s badgering me about what’s going to happen, what happens if they get a better offer and then I go to them and say I’d like them to sign?

“They’d do one without a hint of anything towards me, don’t worry about that! It’s not always one way, it’s not the big, bad club that’s holding players to ransom. They’re also the ones who’ve got opportunities to do something else.

“To be fair to Carlos, I could have kept him here and had him as part of the squad, just as a safety valve.

“But I think we can cover that position and as a favour to him, because he has been so good and such a good player for the club - loyal, honest and straightforward - I wanted him to get some football. And it gives him a chance to put himself in the shop window.”

The Trinidad and Tobago international joined the Blues from Sunderland in the summer of 2009 for a fee of £1.35 million during his former Black Cats boss Roy Keane's time in charge at Portman Road.

In total he has made 170 starts and 21 sub appearances for Town, scoring 10 goals, but this season has started only 11 games, in addition to seven matches from the bench, netting one goal.

Edwards made his Millwall debut in Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Town’s next opponents Blackburn Rovers.

Meanwhile, Blackburn, who are still in with an outside chance of reaching the play-offs, take on Brighton, who are two points and one place behind the Blues in ninth, at Ewood Park in their game in hand this evening. Fifth-placed Wigan are at home to champions elect Leicester.

Elsewhere, Freddie Veseli's loan club Bury face Bristol Rovers at home in League Two, while Jack Marriott and Woking welcome Forest Green Rovers to the Kingfield Stadium in the Skrill Premier.

Has been a good servant to the club. If he does leave, best wishes to him and his family for their future.

The last one to remain of Keanes dreadful transfer dealings?
Fair play to the guy, been a good hard working player for the club, but in all honesty never played at a level that reflected anything anywhere near the money we paid for him.
Good luck in the future all the same Carlos.

He's done what was asked of him even though he's been out of position for most games. He's probably best as a wing back ahead if a back three and town never played that formation while he was here. As he's 35 and wants to keep playing he'll probably need to drop a division to get regular games or find a championship squad desperate for an experienced right sided player. Good luck to him. He was slightly overpriced but that wasn't his fault.

Edwards was perhaps Keanes best signing. Been a Good player for the club.however, as Mick tries to free up wages for new summer signings, it's the right time for both parties to move on. I wish him well.

Some harsh comments, easily Keane's best signing and you can't blame the player for what the manager paid.

Carlos has been a cracking player for us, he has shown commitment, genuine effort and consistently through some fairly bleak years when few around him could say the same. Willing to do whatever was required of him and did it with a smile on his face and not a bad word to say about anybody.

Thank you Carlos.

Didnt he also take a pay cut to stay here. Technically our best player here for some time, also the quickest.. Top man.

If he is off, good luck and wouldnt be surprised to see him back some time in the future.

Thankyou for 90th min winner at derby and 88th (I think) against Bolton last season

I suppose that now he's leaving everyone will forget about his myriad of driving offences and his ability to give away a goal a game due to his complete lack of positional awareness.............a dreadful player whose inclusion in a match day squad exemplifies just what a poor era of football we have suffered.......good luck, you will not be missed.

All the best Carlos! You can still help ITFC though, if you help your team to points against Forest, Wigan, QPR and Bournemouth!

Great servant to the club through the cackest years!
Best of luck!

Have to echo the sentiments of ian marshall with regards to his 90th min winner against derby last season, that was prob one of the most important goals last season that helped keep us up. Great servant to the club, wasn't his fault that the hapless jewell played him as a right back. Good luck carlos!! Once a blue, always a blue

He should definitely be going in the summer. Been a good servant but he's been more than ineffective for the last two or three years in my truthful opinion. Like Jimmy86 says, his goal against Derby to virtually secure our saftey last year was his best moment in a Town shirt. Good luck to him.

His driving offences have nothing to do with his professionalism and performances! If you were in a situation where your wife needed to be rushed to hospital would you wait around for a bus or taxi? You may question his decision making sometimes but as previously stated he won us 6 crucial points at the end of last season and he was always committed to the cause, great pro and representative of the club.

Justspivvychops frankly you should keep those chops firmly shut. Your comments are somewhere between unpleasant and plain stupid. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the fee paid he can in no way be described as a "dreadful" player. And the driving matter is not for debate on a decent football website like this.

justspivvychops- He may not have been a world beater but he played out of position for at least half his time at the club, but despite this never once complained and always carried on with a smile on his face and gave his all in every performance. I agree its the right time for him to leave but he has been one of the best servants to this club in recent years and i for one wish him luck in the future and wouldnt mind seeing him back in some capacity in the future

If so all the best Carlos, he's served us well...without his quality for a few years under RK/PJ we might have been relegated, scored a few blinders for us, one at Southampton I remember quite well.
