McGoldrick Could Be Back Before End of Season
Monday, 7th Apr 2014 12:24

Boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that striker David McGoldrick is ahead of schedule as he recovers from the medial knee ligament injury which had seemed set to end his campaign.

McCarthy says Town’s 16-goal top scorer, who suffered the partial ligament tear in the Blackpool game in February, could be back by the end of the season and would definitely be fit for the play-offs if the Blues were to finish in the top six.

The former Nottingham Forest man was previously expected to be out for between 10 and 12 weeks.

“He’s doing brilliantly,” McCarthy said. “He has been an absolute model professional. He’s doing work before he comes in at the David Lloyd [gym], doing his bits and staying after, he’s been fantastic.

“They’re delighted with him. I reckon he’s a couple of weeks in front of what they thought, even to the point that he might even be fit for the end of the season.

“If we were to get to the play-offs, I think he would be. I don’t think there’d be any problem with that, I think he would. That’s down to the medical staff but also down to him working so hard, he’s been fantastic.”

He says the 26-year-old has shown no signs of getting down about the injury: “We’re not here to counsel Didz, he’s got injured and he’s looking after himself. He’ll get himself back.

“He’s in here working really hard. He’s focused on getting himself back, not at all moping around. All I ever see from him is grafting.”

Would be great for him if we make the Play offs, very unlucky to pick up the injury when he did after such a good season. I think its fair to assume he would have been on 20+ goals by now and also a front runner for player of the year if fit.

Give him a new contract Mick. Sign him up for five years! The future's bright, the future's (Mc)Golden.

Good to have him back, but feel he won't be the same McGoldrick as before until he had about 10 games under his belt. Good to have him fit and ready for next season as with a couple of good additions feel we could make play offs next season.

If we win the last 6 games then 76 points should be enough but feel its a tall order

We will see

Would be a fantastic boost to the team if we could scrape into that 6th spot.

Big big effort is needed now though...COYB!!!

Feel so sorry for Dave, if we had him and Williams playing in the same team that would've been great. Hoping for a speedy recovery Didz!!

As far as I'm concerned our chances of making the playoffs ended after the loss on Saturday, barring some very strange results from other sides. Therefore best to leave Dids out for the rest of the season. Last thing we want is a re-occurance that puts him out into next season. Let's have him ready to start pre season and sharp to fire us up the league next season.

Imagine him and Williams in the same team! It would take a very good defence to stop those two ripping them open!

Rather he wasn't risked and he came back 100% for next season

Brilliant. One big play off push starting at Huddersfield tomorrow. 3 points is a must!

I'm with the cautious comments here. We've heard a lot of conflicting information over this injury in the past few months, which is of course nothing unusual, but McGoldrick is much too important to the long term plans of this club to risk for a couple of games. If it's a choice between playing him in a fragile state for a couple of games in which we might have some faint sniff of making the top six this season, or having him 100% fit for a full playoff-chasing campaign next season, I know what I'd rather have.

Am I the only one looking at next season thinking
-a solid back four at all the right ages that have a great understanding
-mcgoldrick, Murphy and Ebanks-Blake, 3 awesome strikers

Still undecided about gerkin, think skuse is quality, perhaps a little bit of money and a few good midfielders, genuinely think next season could be the promotion season, if burnley can do it, why not us

Can't see the point of hurrying him back if we have nothing to play for in the last game or so...rather have him fit for next season and try and bed in SEB upfront til' the end of the season (to be honest hasn't done that much so far).

Good news but leave him out, it's not worth risking . Good luck tomorrow Town, please try and win, and let's hopes Budgies come unstuck, it's about time their luck ran out, and good luck to Houghton, not his fault

We could end up 7th this season, in my opinion we have played terrible, how good a team do you need to have to get promoted?

We could end up 12th this season, I agree we have played terrible this season!

Lets start with a proper right back.............I've tried some wood glue but I'm still having trouble with the 3 AWESOME strikers............hang on I think the glue is working, I can see Murphy ripping up defenses with his awesome speed.

Beattieballbag, I know we won't have Williams next year, but just putting a decent midfielder in the team has changed the quality of play a bit and that's what we need, Ebanks-Blake potentially could score a few goals after his record, mcgoldrick has done well until his injury, Murphy is Murphy, he will always score goals from set pieces. Mm has to work hard over the summer to get a playing style rather than grinding out results and scoring scrappy goals,
