Premier League Clubs Could Come Calling
Thursday, 10th Apr 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says there could be Premier League interest in a number of his players during the summer. Top scorer David McGoldrick, who could return to action following his knee ligament injury before the end of the campaign, and Aaron Cresswell have both been linked with top flight clubs this season.

Asked whether he thought 16-goal frontman McGoldrick might be targeted by Premier League clubs in the summer, McCarthy said: “Maybe, I don’t know. I suppose we’re at that time, Cressy, there’ll be a few of them.

“I think we’ve had some good performances from players. I don’t know, I’ll find out. If the phone rings, if whoever it is has their name in my phone I might ignore it!”

McGoldrick, who was interesting Crystal Palace during the January transfer window, signed a two-year-old contract last summer having been released by Nottingham Forest, but it’s understood that that deal also included an option for a further season, although McCarthy is remaining tight-lipped regarding the precise nature of his star striker’s terms.

“He’s got more than a year to run, but his contract details are personal and for me to know and not you!” he added. “He’s just trying to get himself fit at the moment, that’s all.”

Cresswell has regularly been eyed by Premier League scouts including those from Southampton, West Brom, Fulham and Hull City this season, while Aston Villa are long time admirers. The former Tranmere left-back is contracted until the summer of 2017.

Player of the Year favourite Christophe Berra and his central defensive partner Tommy Smith are amongst the other members of McCarthy's side who may attract interest.

Always going to happen, as long as we do not sell cheap!

In one sense McGoldrick's injury could work in our favour here. Had he continued that way he was playing & hit the 20+ goal mark, he would be more high profile now & with 1 year only remaining on his contract, it would be difficult to turn down a good offer from a Premiership club - on the flip side, we might be 6th now & maybe 5/6 points better off of course!
Cresswell is a very likely departure unfortunately. Southampton will surely cash in on a big money offer for Luke Shaw from Man Utd (or Arsenal or Chelsea or Man City) & Cressie fits the profile of the type of player they would replace him with. Hopefully there will be a bidding war with some of the others mentioned above also, as we'll need money to replace him, get a new Keeper & new right back & a new creative midfielder ... just for starters.

Not overly worried.. As a team we haven't pulled up many trees, most often described as workmanlike....the odd individual stands out on occasions but if you put it in context, wee JW turns up a couple of weeks ago and attracts mass fan following at Portman Rd. If management structure stays in place and we don't sell our better players to Championship club, add a touch of class to midfield and up top, then without doubt we will be force next season. Lets see what happens, but my prediction of top 8 this season will look mediocre compared to next season,if the above occurs.COYB.

If premier league clubs come calling I would think they have dialled the wrong number. We don't have many individual performers, we are more of a team. McGoldrick yes is good and cresswell is very over rated.

As for Cressy I think Mings is a great replacement and I believe could long term prove a better player

I'm not too worried about the potential sale of Cresswell as Mings is more than good enough to step in. We've not exactly struggled without McGoldrick as Murphy has found the net a few times since he's been out and if SEB can get fit we've got a replacement there also, it's actually the possibility that we could lose Berra and or Smith that I find more of a concern.

I can't see a premier league team coming in for Dids. He's been great for us this season, but this is only the first year he's looked the business at this level and has been around a while. Considering his lack of pace and the fact he's coming back from a major injury, I think he would be seen as quite a gamble.

Cresswell on the other hand, fantastic left back, but we could really use the money to help Mick build the team and like others I've got a lot of time for Mings.

The one I'm most worried about is mcgoldrick - he's the only one(other than joniesta) that really gets us off our seats with excitement. Cresswell is a little bit overrated, don't get me wrong he's brilliant but I think Mings is perfectly capable of filling his shoes, I can't see smith leaving, but if he did I wouldn't mind seeing chambers/Berra partnership and if Berra left it would be disappointing because he's been a rock this season, but I would happily return to the smith/chambers partnership.although for once I don't think anyone in our team is irreplaceable( with the budget we
have)

"Hello , Mick......Beautiful January morning isn't it!"
" Hello , Tony.......what are you after!"
"Any chance of buying McGoldrick"
"Don't think I could manage with out him Tony"
"I've got a great little player I could throw in part exchange?"
" I wouldn't want to take a chance on that with out seeing the goods in action."
"tell you what Mick, see if you can manage without him & I will loan you his replacement & we'll take it from there."
"Go on then I'll give it a go, but keep it under your hat!"

Its up to Evans to say "no thanks" to offers for our better players.( as other clubs often do for their best players)...but then Town rarely seem to do this do they!

If we sold Cressy I'd be gutted but if we used the money to buy Williams then as we already have Mings then it could only be considered great business

Dont forget as well by the time the transfer window opens we could be a Premiership club. OMG that felt good typing that lol

Sell Tabb for no less than 4 million, Nouble for 6 million and Carlos for 10. We can't afford to allow our best players leave for anything less

If be disappointed not to have Premier teams sniffing about. Any team in and around the top 6 of the championship must have good players. It's just those who are under about 26 that the big teams want. Cresswell hasn't played as well this season but does seem to have a lot of assists to his name, and I think McGoldrick might just be too old and not have the best history for some premier teams to gamble on. Mind you he's only got a year left so wouldn't cost much.

We are and always will be a selling club. we will never be a big club like Arsenal Man utd etc that can hold on to their players and lets be honest if you was McGoldrick Cresswell or smith would YOU turn down the chance of playing in the greatest league in the world in front of 60000 every week? Lets get back to real world if they going to go they are going to go lets just make sure we get a better price then we normally do as in the past we have just bent over and been shafted too easily

I think we wouldn't miss Cresswell as mentioned I feel Mings could do a job, I think it's been quite fortunate Williams has come in on loan at some time after McG was injured so maybe we haven't missed him quite as much and to be honest Murphy has had a reasonable season and done a good job since Dids has been injured. Agree with another poster that Berra or Smith would be more of a concern - both very creditable center backs with some goals in them.

Anyone here who thinks that we have anyone who is premiership material is living in a fantasy world.

There is not one player in the current squad who would make it in the top flight. Cresswell for Shaw. That is so funny!

The most a couple of them would be is squad players - if lucky!!

But there again if silly money is being offered take it, pretty sure there will be players around in the summer who could come in and do a good or even better job

Whatever money we get will no way be re invested, Evans will see to that. Pity someone does not offer big money for Hyam, Tabb and a few more of the donkeys that inhabit our midfield
