Chambers: We Never Doubted Ourselves
Monday, 14th Apr 2014 06:00

Skipper Luke Chambers says he and the rest of the Town squad never doubted that they had what it takes to be in play-off contention towards the end of the season. Chambers netted the Blues’ 86th minute winner as they beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1 at Portman Road on Saturday.

Town are currently seventh behind sixth-placed Brighton on goal difference but with Reading able to jump above both of them if they pick up a point or better against Leicester at home this evening.

Looking forward to what are now crucial Easter fixtures against fellow challengers Watford and, perhaps more significantly, form side AFC Bournemouth, he said: “It is a massive opportunity to take points and we have a big weekend ahead. It is a massive opportunity for us to take a step up.

“It will be a great game for us. Bournemouth have done tremendously well to get to where they are but we have a game on Saturday first.

“We will prepare well as we usually do for all four remaining regular season games and see where that take us.

“We never doubted ourselves. We always had real belief and we have always thought if we could be consistent, plug away and pick up points, we could be where we are now.

“Now we are in that position we don’t want our season to end early, we want to go into those final two games with everything still to play for. So we will be giving everything we can as we have done every game.”

The 28-year-old admitted there were some concerns after Doncaster equalised from the penalty spot with only seven minutes remaining on Saturday: “After we conceded we were thinking that it was so late in the game, but thankfully we stuck together, kept pressing forward and I was able to come up with a goal.

“It was brilliant for me [to score] but it is a squad game and we are all in together and we need everyone.

“You can put the win down to the double substitution. The gaffer has often made decisions for the team and the lads take it on the chin.

“We have used so few players and the squad is tight and those that came in played their part.

“It was the same with Tyrone, he came in and he has played a part in both our goals. Okay, he conceded the penalty but he was great for us.”

He continued: “I do like playing against Doncaster, two games and two goals. It is always nice to score and I’m fortunate to score twice and I was delighted to come up with the winner.

“I have tried to bomb forward all season. When the play is on the left I like to move up on the right and try and get on the end of things.

“I have done it quite a few times this season and got on the end of things. I carried on my run and was able to get onto the ball when it fell to me and I was able to hit it into the bottom corner."

Regarding Daryl Murphy, who scored Town’s opening goal just before half-time, he added: “Murph has been brilliant all season and he has been unplayable at time. Long may that continue because he has been brilliant for us.

"We have four games of the regular season left and we are all sticking together. It is a massive achievement for us to be where we are and we will keep going."

I love this man.

Captain Fantastic.

I also note, there's little negativity about him now, he really has continued to improve in that position.

And the comment about Murphy being 'unplayable'....I'd hazard a guess he's up there with the most awkward strikers to play against in the division. Not often it's the striker whose ability in the air is better than a centre half, the guy is superb.

Watford first lads, don't look too far ahead to Bournemouth. One game at a time.

Exciting times indeed. It may sound like cloud cuckoo land but I still think there are 2 places left up for grabs, most of our rivals have to play wigan so either all our rivals are going to fall by the wayside or Wigan are going to be dropping points at a high rate. If we can get at least a point against Watford I think the squad will be so confident at beating our bogey team I think we could then win our remianing 6 games of the season after that. Lets stop saying about normal season get some confidence lads and realise this is a 49 game season... COYB!!!!!

I agree TotalBlue, Wigan aren't guaranteed in there yet. Will be interesting how they bounce back from defeat at Wembley. Also they play Reading next, something has to give there. And then they go to Burnley which will be tough. Their final 2 games are away to Birmingham and Blackburn, neither are easy places to go.

Still, all we can do is win our games, starting at Watford. Get the feeling we'll need 3 points from the 2 away games and wins at home. So Watford is a huge game. Win at Watford and I would say we're 2 home wins away from sneaking in the playoffs.

Whatever happens it's been a great effort this season against bigger budgets and squads like Wigan and QPR who have quality all over the pitch. But we might aswell finish 10th as 7th so I hope we give it a go and go for the win at Watford. A draw isn't enough at this stage, even if we have 2 home wins.
