Blues Continue to Be Linked With Stearman
Thursday, 17th Apr 2014 17:18

Town continue to be linked with a summer move for former loanee Richard Stearman, whose Wolves contract is up at the end of June.

Earlier in the season, the Midlanders put contract talks on hold until their 2014/15 divisional status had been settled, but having confirmed their place back in the Championship, it’s likely that a new deal will be on the table at Molineux soon.

Town, who were priced out of a move for the right-back or centre-half last summer, are reported to be considering making the player an offer, while Leeds, Bolton and Celtic have joined them in keeping a close watch on the former Leicester man, according to Sky Sports.

The 26-year-old made 15 appearances for the Blues in a highly successful loan spell during the second half of 2012/13 and is understood to have enjoyed his time at Portman Road.

Can't think what money Bolton are going to offer - they are going to have to shed players to cut their massive losses and meet the FFP rules. Leeds similarly (don't know why Leeds fans think they are going to spend masses because it won't be allowed) , and anyway it's not yet certain that Cellino will last beyond the written proceedings from his recent Italian court case. If he is convicted of being dishonest, then the FL will come a-knocking again in June. And there are two more court cases queuing up as well.

So our main competition might be Celtic, and Wolves themselves.

Why would he not stay at Wolves?

Liked by the fans here.
Had a good understanding with Chambers and Smith.
Loved by McCarthy and O'Connor.
Will cost the board nothing.
Played with Berra before.

Done deal that one.

Wolves are very keen to keep him now. They don't need him at right-back but Jackett has been playing him at centre-back most of the season and believes that is his best position. If that's the case, surely we can do better anyway?

(assuming we keep Cresswell and were to sign Stearman)
To be able to select a defence from Berra, Smith, Chambers, Cresswell, Mings, Hewit, or Stearman, would be a dream. Get a solid keeper behind them and there could be a fair few clean sheets next season.

There would be no pointing signing him unless Smith, Berra or Chambers were to be sold, and I haven't heard a hint of that.

Williams has shown us that a creative midfielder is what we need more than anything.

I agree with mark. As much as Stearman is a terrific player and i would love to see him on a permanent deal at town, I cant see him leaving wolves now there promoted.

I would rather see the money go towards a Williams type player as thats what we need the most. Don't forget we'll have hewitt back aswell as he has made a lot of progress at Gilliangham with all his first team football.

Aswell our defense is very solid at the moment. Why fix something thats not broken?

We're struggling to drop one of our centre half's we play him at right back... he did a good job for us but we have Hewitt and Vaseli plus potentially Richardson joining on a free too. I think we're sorted for right backs :)

Lazy journalism dragging up old stories & repackaging them I'm sure. I really like Stearman & think he would be a great signing, but like others I'd be pretty sure he'll stay at Wolves now.
He is a very good centre back, although he'd hardly have performed any better than Berra did. He was excellent for us at right back though & did look a stronger bet there than Chambers has at times this season. Still, if we were to sign someone to play right back, it would be preferable to have someone who is an right back rather than a converted centre back.
With Hewitt coming back, I wouldn't rule out the prospect of Mick experimenting with 3 centerhalves & wingbacks, certainly a backline of Hewitt, Chambers, Berra, Smith & Cresswell or Mings looks strong enough to me. We would of course need an extra centre back in the squad for that, ahem, Mr Stearman.

Went to see Stearman play for Wolves away at Crewe on Saturday and he was absolutely rubbish at left centre back . Agree he did well for us last season at right back but now have Berra who wasn't present then . Already have Chambers and Ming's as centre back cover , surely money (wages) would be better off spent on Mr Williams or alike . I am lead to believe Stearman on 12k a week so wouldn't come for less. To sit on the bench ? Expensive for itfc I think

Would be a no-brainer BUT at who's expense?..personally I wouldn't replace any of our current back 4..i know Chambo's not a natural right back but neither is Stearman..and you couldn't replace any of the back 4's passion or commitment....or goalscoring.

Rehashed paper talk. MM loves all of our back four as is, and Chambers is definitely improving as a converted centre half playing right back. Would only expect there to be any interest if MM has had interest in Smith or Berra from other clubs.

We're an injury short of a crisis. We need more depth in defence especially on the right. Frazer Richardson and Carlos Edwards won't be around next season so we need one more player pushing for a place in the team.

As already said, get Stearman in at RB with Chambers on the bench as cover for centre back or RB. We have been very lucky with injuries, can't rely on that.

chambers has been better at right back this season than stearman was last season. top quality player who doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves.
