Williams: Less Pressure on Town
Friday, 18th Apr 2014 06:00

Jonny Williams has spoken of the pressure on play-off contenders not to miss out but believes it is easier to handle with Town.

The on-loan Crystal Palace and Wales midfielder said: “Of course the pressure goes up a level but the expectation levels aren’t too high and I think that’s important. People expected Brighton to do it last year and wrote Palace off but we were the team that won through.

“Just to reach the play-offs would be an amazing experience, let alone going up, but for now we are just looking forward to Saturday’s game at Watford and we’ll see what happens.

“Watford were a good side last year and are still a good side. They have some good technical players who look to pass the ball but so have we and while it will be tough I am really looking forward to it.”

Williams echoes the view of many who have seen Town, relegation battlers last season and unfancied in many quarters, mount their challenge under the radar until they are now to the fore of the race to claim a top-six slot.

He added: “It was a bit like that with Palace last year. They were virtually written off and it has been the same this season with their chances of avoiding relegation from the Premiership. Most people probably thought they were certainties for the drop.

“It’s great for a team like Ipswich, who have been at Championship level for a lot of years, to be so close to the play-offs. You get the feeling around the place that these are really exciting times. We’re joint sixth with only four games left and it’s going to be a huge effort from everyone — players, fans and staff.”

On a personal note, while Williams has played a key role in keeping Town in contention until the closing stages of the season, he is adamant that he has yet to reach his peak.

He added: “Hopefully there is more to come. I haven’t actually played that much football in successive games and the last time I played this many games in a row I was probably still a youth player at Palace. The more games I start and finish, the better my fitness will become, so I definitely think there is more to come.”
