McCarthy: Burnley's Promotion Thoroughly Deserved
Wednesday, 23rd Apr 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy believes Saturday’s opponents Burnley have thoroughly deserved their promotion to the Premier League.

The side managed by Sean Dyche — whose first-team coach is Tony Loughlan, who occupied a similar role at Town under Roy Keane — confirmed their second place in the Championship by beating Wigan 2-0 at home on Monday.

“Good luck to them, he’s been great Dychey, and the players,” McCarthy said. “There are a lot of lads I had there. Michael Kightly scored the winner on Monday, I signed him.

“Dave Jones, I had him at Wolves, there are a few of them. Jason Shackell played with us at Wolves as well.

“They’ve been excellent, they’ve been outstanding and thoroughly deserve it. They’ve stuck with it. Most people, me included earlier on, wondered if they’d continue with just that small squad, but they’ve been fantastic. It’s a great achievement for them.”

But he says won’t be dispatching any bubbly up to Turf Moor for their celebrations: “Will I bollocks! I won’t be sending any Champagne because they won’t be drinking it on Friday night, will they?

“Saturday’s their last home game, so they’ll want to finish on a flourish, they won’t want to get beaten.

“It’s up to us to be prepared and for both teams to be professional and we’ve got to try and win it. It’ll be a hard one for us."

To be fair to battyblue I don't think that he was moaning - just stating that Burnley play entertaining attacking football. We have had a very good season playing safe long ball dull football. Different styles of football thats all

Some so called 'supporters' would moan if we won the Champions league!

I don't think anyone was moaning - we have had a very good season but we do play long ball dull football. If it means getting promoted then so be it.

I think the long ball label is totally misplaced. Its an excuse for MM bashing.
The fact is we have an old fashioned No.9 in Daryl Murphy up front, and as some players have remarked he's unplayable at times with his physical strength and aerial ability. It's obviously working for him because he's getting goals. If Didsy was available we would be playing more to his strength or perhaps a combination of both, but the fact is that just because we would like to play attractive passing football, it doesn't mean we would automatically be better off in the league. According to some, Bournemouth play lovely football, but they are behind us in the league. I think Derby are a very direct team, they are ahead of us. For me the whole notion that 'we are Ipswich, therefore we only play one way' is ludicrous. As I said before, we got drop-kicked out of the Premier last time trying to pass our way around teams when a more direct approach at the time might have yielded a longer stay in the top flight. You can argue the high moral ground on this all you like but the overall success of the club hinges largely on whether you are in the Premier League or not. Its a means to an end.

It is a shame that Mick didn't sign these players for us? It might have been us celebrating instead of Burnley!

For the money (or lack of, should we say) that MM has spent, we've had a fantastic season, he's sured up the defence, something that hasn't been said in many years at this football club. I, for one, am very proud to be an Ipswich supporter and feel blessed for my team to be in the hands of MM. No, we have not played attractive football, but only since didz got injured, when he was playing, I was overwhelmed by the standard of football that we actually played.

If we're not good enough, we will not make the play offs, if we are then great, you can't force a position onto the team, which is what most of the fans seem to do, had somebody said to me at the start of this season that we would be in the mix with to games to go, I would have laughed and thought they were taking the p***

@bohslegend
I agree with the vast sentiment of what you have just written. I am extremly grateful to MM for the way in which he has taken the club forward. I do admit that at times I do think he is too 'old school' and maybe a bit too predictable. But considerly how far he has taken the club forward what he says seems to be the best policy.

Who can argue with the achievements of Sean Dyche - attacking style of play, shoestring budget, what more can you say. Highly succesful season for them - well done Burnley FC.

.......... they are at it again - just because someone has an alternate opinion they are told to 'go and support Burnley then' . PATHETIC ADVICE.

No 'true blue' should be telling people to go elsewhere - we need more support - not less.

I treat such post's with the contempt they deserve - once again PATHETIC.

Many people should admire what Dyche has done at Burnley, didn't take them long to go from 12th to automatic promotion! - just saying! Now that IS REAL progress!

He will be sacked by Christmas when they are cast adrift at the bottom of the Prem and getting stuffed every week!

It still makes me laugh when people say MM has not had any money to spend on players. Where do they think the money comes from to pay the wages of the players?

Yes ME has made some extremely costly mistakes with the past 2 managers and a hopeless CEO but they are gone now. Instead there are now 2 very competent people dealing with the day to day running of the business side, and an equally competent management team in MM and TC. They have spent wisely and created a nucleus of a team that is eventually going to do very well indeed.

The fact we are STILL in contention for a playoff place is testament to all the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes at the club over the past 18 months.

If we don't go up this season then we can all revel in it next year when Town have 'done a Burnley'. Looking forward to it!!!

so excited the game is being shown live in the US, will be the 1st game this year I have got to watch the boys play. I need us in the premier league to see them play every week over here. :-) This year maybe a push, great season, feel we need a keeper and cover at the back and a quick forward to exploit other teams. (no recommendations from me, 13yrs in the States you lose concept of up and coming players from lower leagues aside from what I get to read on the web)

Where does this concept of us playing dull boring football come from? Ok we don't play the most dynamic football but for the most part, the football produced recently is the best we've seen for years. The hump ball mentality is largely in the past and while as practitioners our players may not be the most talented in the division, the value of pure collective effort still makes for entertainment. Sure we can, and indeed need to, improve. Free flowing adventurous and ambitious football requires special players. We have to trust the club to try to assemble a squad to fit this bill. Until then we need to support the players we have and try to encourage them to perform at the top of their abilities.

Blue041273 ............... I can only assume you MUST be seeing a totally different game to most of us - either that or you have never seen decent entertaining football played.

Question: Have you ever been involved in Football in any capacity, or indeed played the game at any reasonable level ??? ................. just a thought !!!

Could have been you Mick, if you knew how to manage a modern football team.
Not playing Taylor - shocking.

It's not such a silly comment Timmy when you consider the number of sackings made by newly promoted teams within the first few months of the season! The realisation suddenly dawns that they aren't good enough and then the panic sets in! You mark my words Dyche will be out the door by Christmas!

JWM - ....... just asking logical questions that deluded people cannot give logical answers to - I rest my case at that point.
