Premier League Trio Eye Cresswell
Tuesday, 22nd Apr 2014 23:30

Scouts from Newcastle United, Southampton and West Brom were at Monday’s 2-2 home draw with AFC Bournemouth again running the rule over Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell.

The trio are amongst several Premier League clubs to have watched the 24-year-old in action on numerous occasions this season.

Fulham have also been regular visitors to Portman Road, while Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Cardiff, West Ham and Everton have all been linked at one time or another. Aston Villa made an enquiry in the summer of 2012.

Cresswell, who Mick McCarthy regards as the best left-back in the Championship, signed a new contract until the summer of 2017 in December having been linked with a move to the top flight during the last four transfer windows.

If Town were to finally cash in on one of their prize assets this summer, the Liverpudlian’s former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Looking around the Premier League, there are some far bigger clubs than the one's named which need a decent left back imho

You can't tell me that Flanagan is better left back than Aaron Cresswell for example and he could have a Premiership winners medal before too long!

Are they all looking for a right midfielder? Did MM play him out of position to throw them of the scent??

May well be inevitable in the summer in the same way the wickham sale was, if we can get 5 million minimum then lets hope that all of that is reinvested in the playing squad. I personally dont know if mings is a ready made replacement, he has had game time under mick, but dont know if he is capable of playing 40+ games in a championship season. He played well against doncaster, but was certainly naieve giving the pen away and has hopefully learnt from it. I would go for Danny Fox who's on loan at forest, great left back

3 million when tranmere are owed money and he contracted until 2017, really??? Thats peanuts bearing in mind he is one of of the lead assist makers in the championship

I knew it! I said in an earlier post that I thought after the last match he looked abit upset but didnt know if thats cause he thinks we wont make the playoffs or if he knows that he will be gone, but I think this answers my question!

Lets hope not as I think he is one of the best players in the team, and for the people that say hes not that good, I think when you hear that premiership clubs are looking at you it speaks for itself, dont you?

STOP DISING OUR PLAYERS AND GET BEHIND THEM!

COYB!

Mings is a very capable replacement, his involvement in the Doncaster goals shows he can get forward, will get better with games. Sorry to see cressy go will leave a big void in the assists column

Yeah, time to cash in to strengthen in the summer.
I'd be happy with 4 or 5 million, nothing less if Tranmere are entitled to 20%.

5m, really? For a player with no PL or international experience..?

Don't get me wrong, I really rate him, and I agree that he's among the best players outside the Premiership, but I think we need a little blunt realism here. Think what you could buy from abroad for 5m: probably an established top-flight defender with international caps. When Patrice Evra (France international) went to Man Utd, he cost £5.5m. Azpilicueta (Spain international) to Chelsea cost 7m. Zabaleta (Argentina international) to City cost 6.5m.

What price Cresswell, based on that? Whatever anyone is willing to pay, obviously!

Hopefully, we sneak the play-offs and it all becomes irrelevant!

It is amazing how few people rate him on here. First he is an excellent defender, who is consistently solid. Secondly he has set up 13 of our goals this season, that's nearly a quarter of all the goal we have scored this season!!

Believe me he will be missed.

One area we have been conference class is that of transfer dealings especially on the sale side. If we sell then please get a decent sack plus add ons. I would love to see him stay but he is a premiership player in the making. Looking at recent transfers £3m would be the min with add ons - very unlikely that we will get £5m up front.

On the up side, Mings has done well to break into the side this year and I believe, on what I have seen to be an even better player. In fact our defence have been good this season and promises to get even better next year.

If he goes, do you really think Marcus will give cash to Mick, he will always hide behind ffp now. Club owes him too much cash, can't afford academy that's why he getting gullible fans to fund it!

The only way MM will have money to spend this summer is if he sells . That probably means bye bye Cresswell , that seems to be the nature of fair play , However 4/5 Million will get a lot in this league and next season i am sure the team will be much stronger.
This will allow ME to invest his cash in grade 1 academy as this seems to fall outside the fair play , which i believe .
So as highly as some of us rate Cresswell it could be one of the most important deals in the clubs recent history

How do we know that these prem scouts were checking out Cresswell? They might have been casting an eye over Frank Nouble.

A lot of the fans on here are so negative. He is by far the best left back in the league and with 13 assists their is many other players with more than that. From a left back position he has done outstanding and will be a very big blow if they are stupid enough to let him go. Mings has got the potential but is not ready for 35/40+ games in a season. Spending money in the transfer market on players we don't need is just pointless. All we need is a good goalkeeper and to get a midfielder like Williams (of course he isn't staying). Even if we do not make the playoffs this season... next season is looking very good! the players have bonded and next season will be even closer! why bring in 4/5 players and ruin that? To me this has been a brilliant season and for everyone to be on here and be so negative? you really need to look at how far e have come in just 18 months.

I would only sell him at a really good price 5 million+ we need a good no1 Gerken has been good but I don't think he's a strong no1 , then we need to get a good RB chambers isn't good enough in that position , I would get rid of tabb , even though nouble is a legend he's not good enough so get rid of him, I wouldn't give SEB a new contract he's passed it and I wouldn't sign green we've got to many similar players I.e hyam and skuse . Last point why isn't he giving the likes of Taylor and Marriott a chance is far beyond me .

We shouldn't feel the need to sell, but if several million is offered up, then its perfectly understandable. Use the money for two players in the Mid, and i would sign Graeme Shinnie from Inverness. Great young left back thats got into the SPL team of the year.

There is clearly a problem with Taylor that we are unaware of.

Central to Towns success

Excellent crosser of ball - set up 2nd goal on Monday and nearly the Mings winner. Would be a massive miss.
Defensively solid- keeps position well, not been skinned often this year. Has had little cover infront once Tunnicliffe left.
Effective going forward when allowed- without Cresswell this year what would he have had to offer apart from McGoldrick?
all this and has not been at his best for the last 3 months

Huge loss should we sell, hard to replace

I Like Mings but he has a mistake in him and not as good on the ball - he should have 6 months on loan to get some games into him and mistakes out of him.

rexron added 12:08 - Apr 23
I think Mings can replace him if the other defenders staying. The defenders know each other very well now, and just 1 player can be replaced by a talented young Mings. I hope he stays though.
