McCarthy: Still Time for Twists and Turns
Friday, 25th Apr 2014 06:00

Town manager Mick McCarthy believes the Championship could provide a few more twists and turns during the final couple of games.

Asked whether he was satisfied or otherwise with the Blues’ season as things stand, McCarthy said: “A bit of both. I’m not sat here thinking ‘That’s great, we’re still in it’, I think everybody in the top 10 will be thinking they could have got in the top six, so it’ll be more than me just thinking that.

“And we might still get there. Ask me on Saturday 3rd May whether I’m satisfied or not because we might be in the play-offs.”

The Town boss, who has described the Championship as “bonkers” on a number of occasions since taking over at Portman Road 16 months ago, says the division could yet provide a shock or two.

“I think something might just happen which throws up an unlikely one and we are one of the unlikely ones because the others have got more points than us,” he said.

“But the target has got to be six points, and if we get them and we finish in the play-offs, brilliant.

"But if we get six points and don’t, I have to say I would be satisfied then. I think we’ve had a right good show if we end up with 71 points. So, we’ll see.”

The Town boss revealed who he views as Championship's Manager of the Year: “I’ve just voted and Nigel Pearson gets my vote, he’s won the league.

“You can say they’ve got the best squad and they’ve spent millions, but he’s had a really tough act to get rid of a lot of players on a lot of money and then really reducing his squad and getting it to a manageable size.

“And never underestimate the job when you’ve lost out in a play-off semi-final, and the manner in which they did.

“To bring that squad back and to win the league with as many games left as he’s done [is an achievement]. Win the league and you’re the manager of the season, for me.

"Sean Dyche has got my second vote and Eddie Howe has got my third having got promoted and doing what they’re doing. They’re a good side, Bournemouth.”
