Doherty Nets But is Red-Carded
Saturday, 26th Apr 2014 06:33

On-loan Blues winger Jack Doherty scored his first goal since returning to his former club Waterford United as they beat Finn Harps 2-0 at home yesterday evening, but was later sent off for a second bookable offence for a dive in the area.

The 19-year-old, who netted just before the break, had previously picked up a yellow card for a reckless tackle.

Waterford manager Tommy Griffin said afterwards: “Jack must learn to stop this bad habit he has brought into his game. He does not need to do such silly things during games.”

The win sees Waterford, who are third in the Airtricity League Premier Division, reduce the gap to leaders Shelbourne to six points.

Doherty played for Waterford in their opening two games against Finn Harps and Galway FC. In the third game against Shelbourne he was replaced in the second half by Conor Meade.

The former Ireland Schools international subsequently came on as a substitute when he replaced Paul Quilty in the South East derby defeat to Wexford Youths and did not play in the game away to Longford Town. He was an unused substitute away to Cobh Ramblers and against Shamrock Rovers he began the game but was replaced in the second half before returning to the side last night.

Earlier this week, Doherty said he hopes to break into the Town first-team squad when he returns from his loan spell in July.

Elsewhere, on-loan Blues skipper Carlos Edwards and Millwall are in Championship action at QPR today, while Elliott Hewitt and Gillingham are at Preston in League One.
