Marriott a Better Player for Loans
Wednesday, 30th Apr 2014 06:00

Mick McCarthy says striker Jack Marriott is a better player for his spells out on loan this season. The 19-year-old netted 13 goals in 23 starts and one sub appearance during two spells with Skrill Premier side Woking either side of a short-lived loan with League One Gillingham, for whom he made one brief sub appearance.

Marriott was recalled from the Cards recently and has been an unused sub in Town’s last three games. On Monday he scored four times for a Blues development side as they won 5-2 at Peterborough.

McCarthy says it was Marriott’s first spell at the Kingfield Stadium, when he scored nine goals in nine games, which saw him make most progress: “After he went and scored his goals, that’s when I saw the difference in him.

“When he first went out and played, having scored his goals and then trained - because he was still training with us as well - he’d got a spring in his step and was sharper and looked better, and he’s still at that level.

“He’s not kicked on again because he’s still at that level. He’s certainly better than when he went out, that’s for sure.”

Marriott’s only senior appearance for the Blues came on the final day of last season as a second half sub at Burnley. The academy graduate, who signed a new contract until the summer of 2015 in December, will hope to add to his debut when Sheffield Wednesday are at Portman Road on Saturday for the final game of this campaign.

He has the experience. Give him a few games in pre-season, maybe even saturday too, and then he will be involved for another play off push next season.
COYB!

Here's hoping he's given a game this Saturday. Damn difficult to score goals sitting on the bench.

I'm very disappointed he has gone the whole season without making an appearance in the first team. Give him a go on Saturday please Mick.

Am I missing something here as I find this all a bit odd?
Are we so awash with amazing strikers that Jack has to bide his time?
As far as I am concerned he should be given an opportunity as he can't be any worse that Noubs or Murphy??
That said, he may struggle to have many chances provided by our midfield.

play him on sat - nothing to play for now so stick him up top with Murphy and play 442 - about time Murphy had some help since we lost DMcG

How is Marriott supposed to get to the "next level" if he doesn't play?

Hopefully he gets a League 1/2 side that is willing to give him regular games next season.

Probably the thing to do would be for MM to give Marriott the whole second half, His fresh legs against a tiring defence would provide him with the best opportunity, particularly when MM can give him a few pearly words of wisdom at Half Time.

I would also like to see Richardson play a full game at RB with Chambers and Smith back together in the middle of defence. Maybe also (looking ahead) give Cressy a rest at RB?

''He's not kicked on again because he's still at that level. He's certainly better than when he went out, that's for sure''

WHAT!? He played up front with Taylor in that development game yet Marriott still scored 4 and Taylor, none! But Taylor still gets his chance at championship level? Infuriating.

I'd certainly give Marriott a run-out at some point on Saturday.

Separate to this, the only loanee I'd have either start or be on the bench for the Sheffield Wednesday game is Johnny Williams, because he is a flair player of they type fans pay to see. There is no point playing any of the other loan players, let's have a look (both fans and management) at some of our own fringe players instead.

jclITFC - are you suggesting that Taylor gets games?

MM may well be reluctant to give him a full game - just in case Jack goes out and shows everyone what we should have had in the team much earlier in the season.

Mind you, Mick would probably be one step ahead of that - in making sure our midfield didn't create any more chances for the front Man / Men ??? than they have all season.

Just a thought !!!

For those that seem to believe McCarthy's opinion is always wrong. Marriott was at a League 1 club all of January and was hardly used. So there is another Manager out there other than our own that feels he isn't ready just yet. I really hope that he is one for the future...the sooner the better of course. To me it seems he is being developed and when the time is right will be a regular first team player. That said some game time against Wednesday would surely be useful, now that there is nothing to play for.
