McCarthy: Cressy Deserves to Play in the Premier League
Thursday, 1st May 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy believes Aaron Cresswell deserves to play in the Premier League and admits that it will be a “real balancing act” to do the best thing for both his first-choice left-back and deputy Tyrone Mings this summer.

Mings, 21, has had few first-team opportunities since joining the club from non-league Chippenham Town in December 2012 with Cresswell’s fitness and consistency restricting him to seven starts and 12 sub appearances, having made his debut at Burnley on the final day of last season.

McCarthy says Mings, who signed a new contract until 2015 earlier in the campaign, has been unfortunate not to be involved more regularly, but is pleased Cresswell has been available to keep him out of the team.

“Had Frazer Richardson not been here - and for a long time we only had Ty as cover - he would have played at right-back [against Bournemouth],” he said.

“I’m disappointed for him, but it means that we’ve had Cressy, our best left-back, fit all season, which is why he hasn’t played. But for Ty I’m disappointed.”

The Town boss says the pair’s future is something to think about come the close season.

“We’ll see what happens in the summer with Cressy and if anything does. Because all the talk’s starting again, the speculation,” he added.

“And he deserves to play in the Premier League, Cressy. Bizarrely enough, if he doesn’t, then we could ruin two left-backs because if he stays in this league for another season he might start to think that it’s an opportunity missed.

“And if he stays in the league for another season, then Tyrone Mings won’t play and that’s going to be counterproductive for him. So there’s a real balancing act for the summer.”

Scouts from Newcastle United, Southampton and West Brom were at the recent 2-2 home draw with AFC Bournemouth again running the rule over Cresswell.

The trio are amongst several Premier League clubs to have watched the 24-year-old in action on numerous occasions this season with the Magpies and Saints both subsequently reported to be ready to firm up their interest with summer bids said to be in the region of £4 million.

Fulham have also been regular visitors to Portman Road, while Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Cardiff, West Ham, Hull City and Everton have all been linked at one time or another. Aston Villa made an enquiry in the summer of 2012.

Cresswell, who McCarthy has repeatedly said he regards as the best left-back in the Championship, signed a new contract until the summer of 2017 in December having been linked with a move to the top flight during the last four transfer windows.

If the Liverpudlian were to move on this time around his former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him after his switch to Portman Road in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

With Town adhering strictly to the Financial Fair Play rules, McCarthy is unlikely to have much of a transfer war chest at his disposal this summer unless a current player is sold for a significant fee.

If that`s not an open to offers I don`t know what is.
Makes sense though, quality replacement in Mings and few £m`s in the bank to fund the automatic promotion charge

Any transfer money on sales will be for wages coming in. There are so many players available on frees. Its getting the right ones in the right positions.

Sounds like a deal might be already done, or at the very least Cressy was given an assurance that he could go at the end of the season if a Premiership club came in for him & we didn't get promoted. Fair enough, good luck to him, but it is very unusual to hear a manager speaking like this, so openly, before a transfer. If a deal has not already been agreed with another club, I wonder if such an approach would be counterproductive from a negotiation perspective. If another club knows that he can go, rather than they having to prize away a key asset, it may be reflected in the final transfer fee.
A minimum of £4m sounds about right for a player considered by many as the best left back outside the Premiership. Southampton will no doubt have serious funds available to replace Shaw, so if a bidding war happens, it may not trouble them too much to go to £5m or even more, possibly ... hopefully ...
It will be absolutely crucial that the manager is given the majority of any fee received to compete in the market for replacements this summer. We have done very well by great free/out of contract transfers, but we cannot depend on 'available' players to get the balance of the team/squad right. We have to be able to target some players who are still under contract, but worth the investment, in order solve a problem or two. For instance, there is no point in bringing in another central midfielder for free if he is 'much of a muchness' to what we already have, when we clearly need someone like Joniesta, who has the little bit extra in class & creativity. In the long run it'll be cheaper to pay a fee now for the right player, get lots of games out of him, have a better chance of promotion, probably increasing attendances, with a sell on value down the line, rather than having another Jay Tabb bit player on the bench for the next 12 months.

I like Mings but he doesnt strike me as a natural left back. Loosing Cressy will be a massive blow. Seems hardly anyone else in the side is capable of creating a goal.

Yes Mings assisted against Donny. But it was a mishit, not skill

Mings won't be good enough for championship football, doesn't have the necessary 'pro' mentality and will be more concerned with how he looks for the cameras on the pitch rather than his performance.

Spot on again Len Brennan .. Cressy definitely playing last game v Sheff Weds , fancy we missed an opportunity in the second half of the season to play him and Mings together on left .
Jewell was slated for bringing in short term old players as a quick fix solution , Keane slated for bringing in his old players yet MM has done both ? We need to invest in young talent like Cresswell , Hewitt ,Chambers with a sell on value rather than old players .
Berra , Dids aside MMs signings and loans have been average at best Gerken no considerable improvement on Loach ,Tunnicliffe,Skuse,Tabb,Hunt,Green,Anderson,Wordy average championship signings , Anderson and Hunt certainly no improvement on Martin and JET ,Nouble below average .SEB spent more time injured .
With the no doubt departure of Cressy and Taylor in the summer the squad looks worse for me and some hungry young players are needed

Surco - Our two most gifted players 'Cressy and Taylor' are pretty much out the door

It was an obvious - 'you need money Mick then sell AC '

I wish Taylor well - 'Not an MM type of player' but does have ability

There are some decent players in lower leagues we should look at

Callum Wilson at Coventry , Dale Jennings at Barnsley , maybe a punt on the Scunny lad banging them in
If Mings keeps off his twitter he will be just fine
Surco - when u look at the buys/loans MM has made I agree with you
Hewitt deserves a run out

I agree Cressy looks on his way and I personally have no fears about playing Mings. I think he will also add rampaging Beattie-like runs (if allowed!) which none of our other defenders do. If Cressy stays, then the answer has been suggested before. Play them both with Cressy left midfield. Gareth Bale started left back and look what happened to him! (Ok he's got a bit of pace too!) We must add a Williams-type player or a winger with pace as we are so one-paced, one-dimensional. Our work ethic will get us to the fringes again but we need 2 or 3 with that bit extra and who knows? More entertainment for certain

Say what you mean Mick you need the money but don't sell him cheap

Personally I think mick is looking to cash in on cressy to give himself funds for the summer, providing of course he is given the majority of it by evans and it doesn't go straight into his back pocket. I'd say we possibly need a new left back, because I feel mings isn't up to playing 40 odd games in a championship season

If Cresswell goes, he'll go with my best wishes that's for sure. He's done a fantastic job for us, and with no guarantee of us being promoted, you can't hold any player back from playing in the Premier.

Too many clubs interested in him for the story to be counter productive to negotiations, but I know where you're coming from.

Also good to give Mings a chance to prove himself.

Look forward to seeing Cressy play what is very likely his last game on Saturday.

McCarthy just hang a sign round his neck "For sale no reasonable offer refused".

Or move Cresswell further forward and put Mings in at left back.

This is mick drumming up offers, I believe an offer has come in but its not what we will accept but Cresswell has been told he can go to premier if someone puts in offer. This will go on until mid august.

As much as I like Mick I cannot understand why he's so desperate to sell " the best left back in the league". Mings looks promising but we cannot afford to lose more creativity.

The money generated from Cresswell's sale would not be spent on transfer fees anyway we have seen it all to many times before. It will more likely be summer of free agents, not to say Mick will not pick up some more hidden gems. We only need a few more additions to push on for next season, but losing Cresswell we be a bigger blow than people think.

He does deserve to play in the prem, but stay here one more year to get us there next season cressy.

This story could also be read the other way round and Mings may be on his way out. I would be sad to lose Cressy but one player does not make a team. I think the lad is very commited to our coause though

Mick is right on so many things here, obviously Cressy is the best left back in the league and if he stays he might ponder ifs and buts that could effect his performances. Though I'd be sad to see him leave, I think he should be sold for the better of the club - for the financial aspect that his sale would bring.

We need a solid keeper, yes, but we also need to nurture our young talents, so if Loach wants first team football cash in (as much as you can) on him and nurture Crowe. I remember when Shane Supple came in and was brilliant, yes not the best keeper but he was one of our own and this is something we need to bring back, having players of our own in the team, rather than as Len put having the Jay Tabb type play for your future then become and then becoming a bit part player for the next twelve months.

We also need a creative getting forward midfield player - but we all know that. Williams gave us so much and for me, was one of the main catalysts of our form for the latter part of the season. Someone who gets at defenses and creates opportunities. Though I was proud we were actually playing for something at the end of the season, the game against Burnley showed us two things, exactly where we are and exactly where we could be in 12 months time. Burnley were in our shoes last season, settling and trying to find their feet. Then, Dyche got them playing a good brand of pressing passing football with ''average'' championship names playing their hearts out every week, especially their midfield, which is where I see our team and midfield going next season if the right signings are made.

Going back to Cressy and the left back situation, Mings does look good, but for me at times vs Doncaster and Bournemouth looked so naive in a few things, but I'm sure Mick could iron out those creases and make him a fantastic full back. Ive said it so many times but if we had a left back that was a mixture of Mings and Cressy we'd have the perfect left back - height, strength, pace, crossing etc. I think if we are going to get rid of Cressy, I'd strongly suggest keeping Richardson too for back up, his performance against Bournemouth was strong.

We've gone forward this season, but it's baby steps we need and we need to make the rught signings over summer to progress, hopefully Mick can see what we all need and next year we can push higher up the league and challenge again.

Excuse the elongated post, this is my first and had a few things to get off my chest.

Rumour of soccernet is that Southampton will look to Cressy if they lose Shaw. As good a rumour as any at this time of year I guess :D

unknown100 added 11:10 - May 1
A top class left back won't win you the league, but if we get a bit of money for him and can get a few top class players then that's what will get us promoted, on the other hand we sold wickham for quite a bit of money and don't remember seeing much of that, either way, thing we are in a win win situation, if he did stay, mings left back, Cresswell left wing

Simonds92 added 11:33 - May 1
Maybe he does deserve to play in the premier league but if he does go this season it will be at massive detriment to ourselves. I've liked what I've seen of Mings but replacing the best left back in the league with someone who has made 7 professional starts seems a bit of a gamble. I think he is a typical McCarthy type player in that he won't let him down on work rate but is he going to be able to recreate the ability of cresswell going forward as well as defensively? Cressy is hugely underrated on here and being in the team of the year and having the amount of scouts he has coming to watch him just shows how good he is. P.s. There's nothing wrong with Mings being on Twitter, he's hilarious!

Taricco was sold for £1.75 million in November 1998 (was worth more but no Premiership experience, like Cresswell). Is £3.5 - £4.0 million a realistic amount?

I wonder if they'll insist on a sell on clause and greater than the paltry amount when they gave away Rhodes
