Millwall Join Chase for Yeovil Defender
Thursday, 22nd May 2014 10:43

Millwall are reported to have joined the chase for Yeovil central defender Byron Webster, who has previously been mentioned in connection with the Blues and Leeds United.

According to News At Den, out-of-contract Webster, 27, whose departure from Huish Park was confirmed earlier this week, will hold talks with Lions manager Ian Holloway when he returns from holiday next week.

Town were first linked with Webster and Glovers right-back Luke Ayling, who is also moving on with his contract up, late last month.

We understand that the Blues have been keeping tabs on the Glovers pair but with right-back or midfielder Ayling of greater interest than centre-half Webster.

Newly-promoted Brentford are also believed to have been eyeing former Arsenal trainee Ayling, who at 22 would be subject to compensation.

Meanwhile, departed Blues skipper Carlos Edwards, who joined Millwall on a one-year deal yesterday, says he was never formally told he wouldn’t be offered another contract by Town and had almost no contact from boss Mick McCarthy during his loan spell with the Lions at the end of 2013/14.

“The manager sent me out on loan and I had a word with him then,” he told the EADT. “He then sent me a text saying ‘all the best’ before my first game for Millwall. That was the last I heard from him.

“He should have tried to talk to me at the end of the season, even if it was just a five-minute chat for him to say ‘this is the situation’. It has left a slightly bitter taste in my mouth because I expected a lot more from the gaffer really.”

Edwards thanked Town fans for their support both on and off the field during his five years at the club: “I’ll always have great memories from my time at Ipswich. I hope the fans have good memories of me too. I certainly always gave my best every time I pulled on the shirt.”

If the claims made by Carlos are true, it really is pretty appalling and not what one would expect of MM or ITFC as a whole.
It will be interesting to see if an apology, an explanation, or a rebuttal, ensue

We do not need Webster. Can't believe we're even linked! As for Carlos I agree McCarthy should have had a chat with Carlos at the end and thanked him for his service. Was a good pro for Ipswich. Thank you Carlos.

You can please some of your players all of the time and all of your players some of the time but you cant please all of your players all of the time. Best of luck Carlos, keep up the good work Mick.

Can't imagine we'll be going after this lad. Sell Cresswell for £5m and use the cash to sign a high profile striker, a creative midfielder and a pacey winger. Simples.

There are alot better CH out there. He struggled to get in the Doncaster side a few years ago. Scoring goals has been the problem nit defending !!

More likely to be interested in Ward from Huddersfield especially as Williams isn't coming back.

Ayling would be a decent signing, I wonder if Webster would be an alternative to Smith or Berra if one of them were to move on?

Maybe Mick should've baked Carlos a cake with "thanks but no thanks" iced on it?

I was just reading the news item from 1 April where McCarthy stated that he expected Carlos to leave. The article reads like the conversation was had then, Edwards was told he was down the pecking order. That is why he was allowed to go on loan to Millwall, to get games and put himself in the shop window.

What was he expecting a gold watch presentation long service award? A ticker tape parade along the Cornhill.

Sincere thanks for your service Carlos, but this is life, this is football, just move on.

Agree that Ayling would be a better option.
As for Carlos, what's his problem? He got a good luck txt. He should be grateful that MM let him go and get some games, rather than fester til the end of the season, and surely knew he was on his way out ages ago. Footballers crack me up.......eg Toure

Anyway - What about the speculation linking MM to Celtic?

How does Edwards get to attend training etc with Millwall
As he hasn't got or didn't have a driving license, and was caught I believe twice a short while back and prosecuted.
Maybe he employs a chauffeur to drive him about or catches the train and a tube. :-)

What does Edwards want? An open top bus parade around the Town!

Edwards, you've got a professional contract at Championship level at the age of 35, that's a good thing you're onto. Why was it necessary to release that bit of tittle tattle? I don't expect you'll be welcomed with open arms in a coaching role any time soon.

So here's the conspiracy theory: Edwards was played at right back in his Millwall loan spell, He'd rather be playing right wing, Town are vying for promising right back Luke Ayling. So Edwards disses Town and MM, Ayling goes to Millwall and Edwards doesn't need to cover at right back any more!

Popeye - Respect !! - is that too much to expect in today's world ???

Why am I surprised ? - I guess many don't even know the meaning of the word.

The standards have definately dropped at our Club - along with the general attitude of some of our supporters.

Not at all what it once was.

@yorksblue; it's roughly the same odds of MM going to Celtic as Paul Jewel so I shouldn't worry too much!

Do we really need Ayling? I think Chambers has done well + we have Hewitt.

MM: After I sent Carlos a text saying ‘all the best', I haven't heard a word from him. I had hoped he would have come back to me and said what he wanted for the future!
