McCarthy: Town Would Look at 'Proper' Cresswell Offer
Thursday, 29th May 2014 16:44

Boss Mick McCarthy has reiterated that Town would be willing to sell left-back Aaron Cresswell if the right offer comes in this summer. The 24-year-old has continued to be linked with numerous Premier League clubs over the last few months.

“I’m not surprised,” McCarthy told the club site. “If a Premier League club comes in for him, at some stage Cressy has got to take that and go and play at that level.

“We are not going to let him go for silly money. We don’t have to let him go because he’s under contract but if a ‘proper’ offer came in, Cressy knew about it and it was a club that he would like to go to, we have to look at it.

“If we don’t he’s going to say ‘come on gaffer!’. We have to be fair to him. He knows what we think of him here and he loves the place as well.

“If the offer is right for the club and we don’t give him that opportunity, you can lose his head and his heart and if that happens, we won’t have the same player.”

Southampton were regular visitors to Portman Road during 2013/14 and were believed to be the front runners — with some Saints sources recently claiming that they had even got as far as making an unsuccessful £4.5 million offer earlier in the summer — but the departure of their manager Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham this week is likely to put their interest on hold while his replacement is installed.

If Cresswell, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2017, were to move on his former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him after his switch to Portman Road in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

With Town adhering strictly to the Financial Fair Play rules, McCarthy is unlikely to have much of a transfer war chest at his disposal this summer unless a current player is sold for a significant fee.

On the subject of additions to McCarthy's squad, joint-MD Ian Milne says there are currently few firm developments.

“I was talking to Marcus Evans, the owner, the other day and it’s very early at the moment,” he told BBC Suffolk. “There are a few twitters going on but there’s no news at this moment. Watch this space.”

Asked about McCarthy’s own future, Milne hinted that an extension to the Town boss’s contract, which is up next summer, could be under discussion: “Mick will be around for a while. Watch this space.”

Milne added that next year’s season ticket sales are up on last year’s total of around 12,000.

An increase in season ticket sales for the first time in what, 10 years? A measure of how well Mick is doing.

Don't get me wrong, I like Cresswell. However, if there s a chance of premier league football and he wants to go, I don't think we should stand in his way. Also, with ITFC one of the few clubs adhering to FFP, in order to push on next season we need to add quality to the squad. This will cost money. If Cresswell gains a good fee and Evans is prepared to invest it into the squad, sadly we will have to cash in. I still believe Mings could do a decent job. But we will have to be patient with him.

The trouble is clubs might not bid so much due to how we are giving the impression that we really want to sell him.

Great news that season ticket sales are up. Surely that should be the headline news.

I'm a massive fan of creswell, but honestly I would happily let him be sold to develop other areas of the squad. Plus on the little we have seen of him, it appears mings could step up nicely!

If Cresswell is to leave I wish him well as he has been quality since we signed him. I hope though that this happens quickly so we can either ready up Mings or sign a replacement before pre season kicks in.

I hear Jonathan Parr and Neil Alexander were released by Palace yesterday... (Mick I hope your reading this)

This is clearly a message to a club who has already made a very low offer that we don't have to sell. Anything over £3.5m and we should be selling

As Mark says it starts to look like we're desperate for a sale but at the right price . So clubs frankly will justvsit tihht and we dont get that big offer we are after.

Stop trying to actively sell him!! It's making us look desperate and foolish. Cressy is happy at town and I honestly believe he doesn't want to leave. He's always made a point of saying that, hence why he signed his new contract till 2017!!! Unless of course mick doesn't actually rate him as highly as he makes out. Yes he is a saleable asset but we should be lookint to keep our best players, we dont need to sell!!

Every player has a price, at last we have a Manager that knows what a player is actually worth, if a Prem club thinks he's good enough then they pay the Premiership price, simple as that. Nothing less than £6m for me, or a cash plus player deal perhaps.

As the new season's start gets nearer if we have still not managed to sell Cresswell the club WILL be worried as they do need to sell him despite them saying they don't. I'm sure prospected buyers have also worked this out, so don't get excited about a large fee for him.

The club is talking a good game as it has done in pre season for a number of years, but the proof will be on day 1 of the new season and who is playing for us and will the players be any better than they were this year. Personally, I think not, but I hope I am wrong. I'm afraid I also do not buy the spin of season ticket sales are up, yeah right!

Cressy mate if you're happy and want to develop yourself for another year or two then stay and do it here. It'll help you more right now and then the big money will be easier to come by. Mick please don't put him on gumtree as you're looking more and more desperate. Yes he probably is the best left back in the championship but if he's happy where he is right now then let him be.

We don't have to sell him. Who is saying we do ? If the right offer comes in , mm will ask cressy if he wants to go. Those are the facts. All these added on remarks have come from the experts on here who think they know it all.

If Luke shaw is worth 17 million or whatever Cresswell has to be worth 8 million at least. There aren't that many good left backs.

Cressy doesn't want to leave. Mick doesn't want to be accused of holding him back but needs cash...because he's got a shopping list.
Surely either way we win. Keep Cressy or buy a couple of creative midfielders/quick men on the flanks.
Hold on to your tractors, boys. Mick's driving.

Good news on Season ticket sales. I know we can all feel the genuine "buzz" about the place at the moment and that is clearly showing in those sales. Long may they continue.

For me, Cressy is the best left back in the league. That there is no doubt. If we have ambition to get the premier league, which we clearly have been showing based on last years performances then we should only sell for proper money as Mick says and we should be looking to keep our biggest and best players. Cressy is obviously one of those.

I can perfectly understand Mick making these statements but i would imagine they sound more defeatist than he means. It would indeed be wrong of us to turn down a big offer from a club Cressy would like to go to because we will lose his head. However if the offer isnt right for both parties then we should defo turn it down.

I genuinely believe that there will be many offers but i would like to think Cressy feels the buzz too and would be keen for at least one more year here. He has always stated that he wants to play in the prem but would love to do so with us more than anything. So why not this year? Things are pointing up for the first time in years and i just have a gut feeling he will want to stick around just a little longer!

Keeping hold of our best players is what we need to do!

I don't see MM saying the same about Mcgoldrick! i guess he sees creswell as a meal ticket for squad rebuilding. Sensible if he gets to spend the money. Mcgoldrick and his scoring ability would be much harder to replace.

Saints apparently rejected £27million for Shaw. I know Prem and Championship are very different. But look at these stats and tell me Cressy is worth only a tenth of Shaw... http://www.squawka.com/comparison-matrix#championship/2013/2014/aaron_cresswell/ We should get at least £5 million I think.

I don't think we've had one 'offer' never mind a 'proper' one, this Cresswell story and the links to him unfortunately I feel are going to run and run throughout the summer...next!
