Blues Linked With Leigertwood Move
Thursday, 26th Jun 2014 12:35

Town are reported to be closing in on the signing of Mikele Leigertwood, who was released by Reading at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old began his career with Wimbledon and has since spent time with Leyton Orient (loan), Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and QPR before joining the Royals, initially on loan in 2010, prior to signing a permanent deal in June 2011.

Londoner Leigertwood scored the goal which took Reading into the Premier League in 2012 but last season he was limited to three starts and one sub appearance having undergone ankle surgery at the beginning of the campaign.

The midfielder, who is 6ft 2in tall, has won 11 caps and scored two goals for Antigua and Barbuda.

Town boss Mick McCarthy is likely to be keen to add to his options in the centre of midfield with loanee Paul Green having left the club at the end of the season and not having been offered terms for the season ahead.

We don't need defensive midfielders.

I would NOT take him. He should be made to pass a very rigourous fitness test

Could be the two man defensive midfield of Skuse and Leigertwood with a new attacking midfielder in front of them?

So, we'll just wave goodbye to Luke Hyam then, Marcus_Evans? Not for me.

We have defensive midfield players. Creative attacking ones needed. Essential we need to bring in a player in the same mould as Williams. The back end of last season told us that was an area we were desperately missing.

Solly, despite all his energy and endeavour, does Hyam offer enough for us if we really want to kick on?? He is being asked to play a role he is clearly not suited to, with regards to getting forward more and he isn't capable of doing it. Sitting in front of the back four and protecting them, fine. Getting forward and attacking, not for me.

Leigertwood, if fit, could def add something to the team for sure and he has experience of getting promoted

Be very surprised if this didn't happen tbh. Every time we've been reported to be 'closing in' on a player in the MM era they've signed for us. Perhaps announcing him and Henshall tomorrow on 1st day back

If fit we have to take him. He is a very good player at his best. I would think he has a couple of years left in him.

God will you lot stop moaning! We have one of the smallest squads in the league so he is adding to that with players who have been with teams that have been in promotion winning teams, I'm not going to lie I'm not McCarthys biggest fan of playing style but he's taken us from bottom of the league to established, the near miss of the play offs on 20 quid, who is this amazing attacking flair player who is going to come to us for free with probably small wages? He will have to go to the loan market which isn't ideal but it's literally the only option we have, stay positive it's not even July the 1st yet!

@solly - Hyam would be no.3 to those two who have much more experience in that role. Hyam could be the box to box player in front of them?

He is better than what we currently have & has been part of very well defensively organised teams in the past at Reading. Agree we do need some pace, power & creativity in midfield too but with the number of points we lost from winning positions, there is a need for an organiser

Strange signing to be honest IF it turns out to be true. Surely comng in as a back-up player? Cannot see how he would make our starting 11....

We must remember that it's a squad game, not just the starting 11. The teams that do well usually have competition for places and decent replacements when injuries occur. Not the most inspiring signing as we need creativity, but a decent Championship midfielder can only improve the squad.

I agree with all of those saying he's being signed as cover which would make sense but worried about spending money on wages that high restrict our chances with players later on.

Would he be signed as cover?! He has played in 2 very successful teams that got promoted and also contributed to that in a big way. It will certainly add to our options in midfield

Yes, Yes and YES. Rated very highly by Reading fans who were gutted to see him released but no surprise due to his lack of games. IF fit now, he would be fabby.
