Hunt Set to Rejoin Blues
Friday, 27th Jun 2014 12:20

TWTD understands that Stephen Hunt will join up with the Town squad for pre-season training next week and is set to sign a one-year deal.

Hunt, 32, signed for the Blues last November on a short-term contract which was eventually extended until the end of the season.

The former Wolves, Brentford, Hull City and Reading man made 16 starts and eight sub appearances for Town, without scoring.

At the end of the campaign, manager Mick McCarthy said he would consider whether to offer permanent deals to Hunt and loanees Frazer Richardson — who is understood to be close to joining Rotherham - and Paul Green over the summer.

Hunt, who has spent the summer opening Tides, a gastropub in Rosslare, said he was keen to extend his stay at Portman Road, tweeting: “It's been a pleasure to play for this club. To the players, staff, fans and the town, if I'm not back, all the best. Hope to be back.”

Lovely jubbly. Need characters like Hunty around.

Far from delighted with this. He made a decent impact initially but was very poor by the end of the campaign - needlessly giving the ball away and lacking any sort of touch or composure. I really hope he is being seen as back-up and McCarthy will still be able to bring in a decent young wide player.

I'm a bit 50/50 with Hunt. Out the Hunt's, Richardson's, Green's etc that we had on loan or one year deal, he's probably the one I'd keep. He's a good character to have around the squad but I'd only really use him as a bit part player to bring on this year. He's not very future proof and lacks pace. I'd like to see us bring some quick wingers in who beat their man and get balls in.

It's a good deal. An option off the bench, decent squad player. Clearly not a key signing but happy enough with this.

Well spoken M11, agree fully.

I guess Henshall is one in the future cat, however we need one more direct winger in addition....C Stewart is linked...dunno if he would be the best choice, but he's at least pacy and direct...(More than Martin....)

I think Hunt is better as an impact player coming off then bench than someone starting the game. He can turn things around when running against players who are a bit tired but can be caught a bit short when playing the full 90 minutes. If we can make the most of that then a one year contract would be good.

I'm pleased with this. He brings a wealth of experience and with a decent pre-season behind him (which he didn't get last season) should be a real asset.

I am a little 50/50 myself, we may have seen the best of him and he could be as good as Jimmy Bullard at the end.....

just hope he isn't taking our corners and free kicks next season

Decent, i would rather have him as an impact sub and sign someone for the first team though

Good signing as a squad player. Mick hasnt done too badly with his signed and team management. I trust him with this signing as its only a one year deal.

great free signing and short term its great cover while Henshall gets up to speed. Great player to bring on when chasing a game, his energy always drives the team on. A no brainer really

I dont think he's the type of player to do a Jimmy Bullard but maybe a Jay Tabb! just hope and think that there might be better to come. On another note Luke Shaw 30 mill!! well done Southampton.

2013/14 Stats

Appearances: 24 (23 x league, 1 x cup)
Starts: 14
Minutes played: 1286
Assists: 2
Goals: 0
Yellow Cards: 5

Yes, he came on as sub 10 times, and in 6 of those games games he played less than 20 minutes. BUT the stats still don't lie. Is a player past his peak. Tries hard, but runs into danger all the time, rarely finds a team-mate and very little end product. Yes he runs back, but in a 4-4-2 your wingers should be a threat to the opposition and not an additional defender. Would not sign him if I were boss. Hopefully only will be used as a sub or back-up for injuries.

I'm also 50/50 on this. Hunt is clearly a great character and good to have around, but his performances were very inconsistent and you always got the feeling that if Mick really wanted him, a deal would have been done earlier (to come into effect from 1 July). I just hope this doesn't mean we have failed to land other targets. It just has that feel to me.

I think Mick wanted to see if Henshall signed so he could then use Hunt as tutor for Henshall and use as changes in games . All contracts start on July 1 st when signed between seasons .

Decent signing. The manager knows him and Hunt know what the manager expect.
Its about 50 games to be played and he will get his chances. We actually may be lucky with him.
Now lets get a leader in the midfield who we can rely on like Wark and Holland.

I Like Hunt and his commitment and glad we have signed him. Hopefully he can get a bit of practice in the close season on ball control and final pass (other than deal ball kicking). I dont recall one occasion when he ever had the ball under control or delivered a great cross in. It always seemed to be bobbling about around his shins!

What a lot of moaners you lot are [well, most of you]. I bet if we signed Messi & Naymar you,d still have a crib, Stephen Hunt is a decent player who will always give 100%

A six month or 1 year contract I feel is about right, as mentioned of all the loans maybe he was the one to get back but have to say he did tail off at the end of last season after having a few good games. Certainly no where near cementing his place on the left in our starting 11.

I was unimpressed by Hunt last season. Yes, he works hard and runs around a lot, but that's about it. He hasn't got the ability or the pace to take on his man, and goes to ground too easily when he runs out of ideas.

Ok as a squad player but I hope he isn't used as a regular starter.

Never convinced me, looked past-it. We'll see, he brings a good attitude and will improve the team morale. In mick we trust

Oh dear, possesses the footballing finesse of a ferret on acid. However, will charge up and down the wing even when the final whistle has blown and stadium has emptied, so ideal MM material.
