Rotherham Confirm Green Deal
Monday, 30th Jun 2014 18:19

Championship new boys Rotherham United have confirmed that former Blues loanee Paul Green will be joining them on a two-year deal after his release by Leeds.

Following the Irish international’s spell at Portman Road at the end of last season, Town boss Mick McCarthy said he would weigh-up whether to offer the 31-year-old a permanent contract over the summer, but no deal was forthcoming and he has now joined ex-Blues keeper Scott Loach and fellow former Blues loanee Frazer Richardson at the New York Stadium.

Millers manager Steve Evans told his club’s official site: “We are delighted to have signed Paul after several chats with his representatives.

“The lad had a magnificent finish to the season with Ipswich Town, so it wasn’t a surprise to find there was significant interest in him, so we are very pleased to add him to our squad.

“I think the lure of Championship football, knowing what we are about as a football club and our magnificent stadium all helped to convince him that this was the club for him.

“Paul is a full international, he has just returned from an end of season trip with Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland, so he will be given a few more days to recuperate.

"He has been down here today to finalise the deal and have his medical but he won’t officially begin work with us until Monday next week.”

Green made six starts and eight substitute appearances while with Town, scoring two goals.

Elsewhere, newly-promoted Leicester have been linked with winger Cameron Stewart, who the Blues and Charlton are understood to be eyeing with his permanent switch to Leeds collapsing. The 23-year-old is a free agent with his contract at Hull up this summer.

Meanwhile, former Blue Andy Drury has rejoined his former club Luton from Town's Capital One Cup opponents Crawley for a fee of £100,000, signing a two-year deal.

Rotherham will be crap next season, filling their squad with lots of players who aren't much better than they have already.

......... Rotherham are reeling them, for those that knock them i.e Edmunds5, should we wait and see how we fair this season compared with 'little' Rotherham .......... ??

In my opinion they have made some shrewd, and very good signings.

I suppose we cannot compete with the Rotherhams of this world anymore !!!!

Green was played out of position at our club and we didnt see what he could have done.He will do a good job for them in centre midfield.Another out the door here thats all we see here our small squad getting smaller..

Green not good enough for us, Richardson not good enough for us, Loach not good enough for us - apparently.

I just do not know where all the 'super replacements '' are coming from to replace these squad / team members of last season.
He we are, on the eve of pre season return - and where are we compared with the end of last season ???? - WORSE OFF - it has to be said.
Even if we do reel in a couple of scrag end signings at a late stage - not really the best pre season prep is it ??

But then, we are IPSWICH - and I forgot we can't do what other Clubs can - for a multitude of reasons, most of which MAKE BELIEVE. And 'believed' by far too many turnstile clickers - for the Clubs good.

I don't agree with any of that, its the 30th of June for goodness sake. Hardly any other clubs have done any major business yet bar those who feel they really need to change their squad radically to have a good season next season. Birmingham who were close relegation and Rotherham (newly promoted) are clearly examples of those.

We came 9th last season and were maybe a creative midfielder and a quick winger of making the play-offs, the improvement when Williams came in echoed this and that was also without our top scorer.

I would rather MM bide his time and get the right players in than rush in to get a load of players unlikely to add anything different to the side.

Paul Green wouldn't have been the game changer we need, technically not good enough, and if MM thought he was he would signed him already, as Green spoke as if he would be happy to join. Be logical.

Great news. Green certainly not the answer and very similar to what we already have. Saying that I do agree with blue boy1981 - I do wonder where replacements are coming from. Yes, it's only 1 July tomorrow, but other than resigning Hunt and making a loanee who's never kicked a ball for us a permanent signing, the fact is that at time of writing we are certainly worse off than the squad which finished last season. Yes,there is time, but players need to bed in and gel prior to the big kick off. How many times under PJ did we leave it late to sign players and then use the 'they need time to gel' excuse?!

Also, Luton can afford £100k and we have to accept that we can't afford anything? Really?

Fantastic news, another useless 'run through a brick wall' midfielder with no brains. Anyway we have Hyam so why worry

......... let's see who we sign then should we ? - at this time last year we had two Goalkeepers in contention for the No. 1 spot - now Gerks has no competition at all. Just one example - Can anyone justifiably say that is progress ??

Pre Season is all important to teams that mean business - been proved numerous times at all levels.
Players need time to 'gel' and 'settle in' for a team to be successful.
As Jason0999 has pointed out - this has been used as an excuse by previous Managers and Supporters enough in the past - therefore I guess IT MUST BE CORRECT.

Supporters has short memories tho' - and conveniently it no longer seems to matter !!!! - any ideas why ??

Its June 30th? I don't get your point, if it was August the 2nd I and no one was here I could understand. What exactly were you expecting at this point? As I said, most of the buying players at the moment are teams who have let quite a few go. If anything it will take them longer to gel, and underlines that we have quite a stable squad that needs a couple of tweaks here and there. you're not making any sense at all. MM is also a master of capturing players for small fees, as he did last season and previously with Wolves.

Dont know why Green isn't more appreciated on here. He had a very good second half when he replaced Wordsworth home v Bournemouth and scored a good goal. He also did good work helping out the defence. That was a big match and he was one of our best performers. He should prove a very good signing to help Rotherham stay up this season.

Fair enough. Town didnt want him that much as he would be a good squad player but probably not a major starter albeit apart from injury. Best of luck to him. MM will do good for us, you can not really fault his record of achievement at town so far!!

Six starts and two goals is not a bad return, especially compared to someone like Lee Martin!

For the love of *od! Have peope not learned from the recent past that signing everyone left right and centre doesn't necessarily deliver results?? Blueboy 1981 may still be dribbling over his Panini stickers of Chopra, Bowyer, Priskin, Bullard, Leadbitter, Ingimarsson et al. But more learned fans are probably more interested in whether young players such as Henshall could make an impact this season, rather than bringing up Championship Manager 2015's list of free transfers over the age of 30.
