Town Closing in on Bialkowski
Friday, 4th Jul 2014 12:37

Town are closing in on the signing of Notts County keeper Bartosz Bialkowski, TWTD understands.

Although the deal is not yet done, the clubs are in discussions regarding the move and the switch may be completed in time for the 26-year-old to join up with the squad during their training camp at the Carton House hotel in Co Kildare next week. Town travel to Ireland on Sunday.

Last month, TWTD reported that the Pole would be on Mick McCarthy and keeper-coach Malcolm Webster’s list of potential targets, having been interesting the Blues last summer.

Bialkowski spent a short spell on loan with the Blues in 2009 from Southampton without making a first-team appearance and was previously coached by Webster during their time together with the Saints.

While on loan with Town the keeper was red-carded during his reserves debut in a game at Luton when he handled the ball outside the area with the Hatters bearing down on goal.

Earlier in the summer, Bialkowski told the Polish media that he is set to leave Notts County, despite having a year left on his contract and that he was close to a move to a Championship club, with Brighton having been linked.

Speaking last week, Magpies manager Shaun Derry said that although there had been interest in his keeper his club was at that point still to receive an offer.

Town are in need of an additional senior goalkeeper with Scott Loach having moved on to Rotherham earlier in the summer.

The fee County will want for 6ft 4in tall Bialkowski — likely to be in the low hundred thousands - may have been an obstacle preventing the Blues from firming up their interest earlier in the summer but Town are in an improved position with West Ham agreeing to pay an initial £3.75 million fee for Aaron Cresswell yesterday.

Can't be any worse than Gerken

Surely better goalkeepers around but hey ho, I'll give him a chance before I pass judgement.

webster clearly rates him and at 26 he's a good age with time to develop. I can see him pushing gerks for a starting spot

Was really hoping for Westwood or a return for Henderson but In Mick We Trust!

Work with a Notts County fan who says this guy is a very good keeper and was highly instrumental in keeping them up last season.

Before people just rule him out in such a dismissive way, I found a couple of comments on the Nottingham Post website that are interesting...

"arrrrgghh, I think he deserves the opportunity, but we will miss him massively. His head never drops, he was the best keeper in this division last year. Spiess has looked good everytime he's had the chance but I will still be sorry to see a talismanic player like Bartman leave the club"

"It would be a shame to lose Bart without any doubt but we do have Spiess and I really think he can make the step up."

Would definitely prefer this guy to Henderson. Obviously webster has worked with him before and believes there is something in him.

Rated at Notts County and in good form.
Good competition with Gerken for a first team place- just hope we do not end up paying too much for him.

Seen him a few times, he's solid and will be a loss to Notts.

Firstly, it's lovely to know we can actually spend a modest fee to land a preferred target, rather than settle for just loans and frees. It opens up other opportunities and a wider range of players for us. Obviously wanted last season, but fee out of range, therefore ended up with Gerken, who is okay but not brilliant.dont get me wrong, there are lst of good frees to be had, but if a better player is available for a small fee then it's surely beneficial and useful for mick.

Don't know much about this guy though. Reviews seem promising.

I'm very disappointed. I would have preferred the Mexico keeper or Tim Howard. Why weren't we in for either of them???

Looks decent enouhh shot stopper from fidtance. But what's he like at crosses, commanding his area, kicking the ball etc. Much more to GK than just shot stopping.

Hopefully he does a bit better than this!

In all seriousness though, he's a good signing, highly rated and seen as integral to keeping County up last year.

Woops, that should have been a link to this error against Blackpool when he was at Southampton -

Hey lets slaughter the bloke before he even puts on a shirt, assuming he signs. All so negative. Forget Hendo he isn't massively better than Gerkin or Loach was except he is probably paid at least double what they are. Remember he is on a prem contract so to move, even on a free would cost heavily on wages. Whereas BB is decent enough and will probably get a pay rise to come to us thus keeping available wages for additional players.

Makes me wonder whether he's seen as an outright number one, backup for Gerken or just equal competition. Either way, as long as it's not a total waste of time like his loan spell here a few years ago, I'm not gonna complain.

Really gets up my nose when a few so called experts on here start slagging a player off before he has even signed. Trouble is a few think they are experts because play a few football related computer games.

Think he is a good keeper so could be a good signed. Just waiting for the same few to slag off the possible signing of Jonathan Parr!!!

I think this could be a good signing. Great shot stopper. Sadly I can only see us going backwards for a few years but th8nk this guy could be key to holding back the inevitable. I fully expect him to be player of the season a few times.

I think he'll be a good signing, I can see him going on to win POTS with us if he fulfils his potential. We might even go on to make a profit on him if he does well and a club like Millwall come in for him.

Welcome to Ipswich Bartosz.
