Town Confirm Parr Signing
Monday, 7th Jul 2014 16:24

Town have confirmed the signing of former Crystal Palace left-back Jonathan Parr on a two-year deal. The 25-year-old was a free agent having been released by the Eagles at the end of last season.

Oslo-born Parr, who is 6ft tall, has won Norwegian caps at U17, U19 and U21 levels and has played for the senior side nine times.

Prior to joining Palace in July 2011, he played for Lyn and then Aalesund, having previously been with youth sides Holmlia, KFUM Oslo and Hauger. He made 82 starts and 19 sub appearances for the South Londoners, scoring two goals.

Speaking last week, Parr's father and advisor Roger revealed that there had also been interest from clubs in Europe, as well as from Bolton, who are managed by his former Palace boss Dougie Freedman.

Town fans may remember the new signing best for having been stretchered off with an ankle injury - which saw him miss the first five months of last season - during the Blues' 3-0 victory over the Eagles at Portman Road in April 2013 following a solid but fair Richard Stearman challenge.

Parr told Ipswich Player that he's hoping to put that behind him: “I did my ankle at Portman Road, so not the best memory for me! Hopefully, I can create some good memories in my time here.

“It’s been a long summer, trying to sort out where I’m going to play my football. I spoke to a number of clubs but I had a good feeling about Ipswich.

“I watched Ipswich play last season and they looked a good team. The manager told me what we wants from his team and how he’s looking to be pushing for a place in the top six.

“That’s where I want to be. Everyone wants to play at the highest level and I’ve joined Ipswich to help the club get in the Premier League.

“Having been here today and speaking to a lot of people, it looks a club that is all working together and that’s made me feel even better about the decision I have made.

“I spoke to Jonny Williams, who was here on loan last season, of course, and he couldn’t speak highly enough of the club. Maybe I can get him to join me. I’ll give it a go. It could be fun!”

Parr will join up with the Town squad tomorrow, the rest of the players having flown out for their training camp at Carton House in Co Kildare earlier today.

Team is starting to shape up nicely. Very pleased with this signing. Would love to see us use the Cresswell money on 1 or 2 quality central midfielders, one box to box, one flair.

Great deal! Adequate replacement for Cressy, just a creative midfielder and forward and we should be ready to go. COYB!

Signing a Norway international for free to replace Cresswell sounds like really good business. Only 25, so years ahead of him too.

excellent signing as are the others so far, I reckon Mings will be off on loan to get regular football which will be good for him and the club, now find another midfielder with the quality Williams had and then we will be looking good.

Great signing on a free and nice for it to happen so quickly.

Chances of a new goalie by the end of the day?

Nice to see us doing our business early and hopefully a good signing. Maybe MIngs will go out on loan as he will be frustrated by this but MM clearly doesn't think he's ready. I wonder who will be next - central midfield creator, right back and striker?

Brilliant news, very good signing..I think we're pretty well covered re the defence for next season (hewitt, chambers, berra, smith, mings, parr).

Now to bring in Bialkowski,An attacking midfielder plus a striker and i'd say we've almost completed the jigsaw.

Good work Mick.

Pleased for you sindre!!! Parr is a really good replacement for cressy and was very highly rated at palace, welcome to town and goof luck johnny!! Be a good battle between mings and parr for the starting place. COYB!!! Now a new goalkeeper (preferrably a new number 1) and a creative midfielder who knows where the back of the net is. Shaping up nicely

Good bit of business here. From a defensive point of view we are no worse off, although we will definitely miss the quality of Cressy's "sweet left foot" from the attacking side of things. At least we now have around £3m or so (after Tranmere get their portion) of which I'd like to think £2m can be invested in missing link* type players that we can go and target, rather than depending on who's available on a free.

*By "missing link" I mean quality creative players in the mould of Jonny Williams, the type we are crying out for to get the balance of the side right; as opposed to a neanderthal type, with a scary protruding face, in the mould perhaps of Ben Thatcher.

Really shows the direction of the club, a sensible signing which also allows us to either loan out Mings or have him and Parr compete for the left back position. Now if we can just get a creative midfielder and maybe some cover for other position/squad players, I think we stand a genuine chance of a high finish

this doesnt come without its risks he has evidently struggled to get back to form since a bad ankle injury a couple of years back. Potentially given the chance to play regularly (something he wasnt able to do last season) i think he has the chance to be as good if not better than Cresswell. fingers crossed he will show some of his old form (a couple of years back he was being scouted by several Premiership teams). Im assuming the fairly short deal is either because we are concerned he may not find his old form OR he has aspirations of moving on to a Premiership team in the medium term (and that of course is not guaranteed for us!). Either way i wish him well and look forward to seeing him in a town shirt. If Cresswell had any weakness it was his height and this guy is 6ft. That said i dont think height was too much of an issue for Cressie. lets hope his corners are on Parr with Cresswell :-)

It simply proves how far we have fallen

We have lost a player in the team of season and replaced him a player released as not good enough by Palace?
And people call it good business.

Dodgy cardigan but a far from dodgy player!

Great work Mick in signing a quality player.

Very happy with that indeed. Honestly, this guy is just as good as Aaron Cresswell when it comes to the defensive side of his game (...as I deliberately avoid the obvious pun in that sentence).

Where we may miss Cresswell is in the assists department, but if truth be told, I would expect the midfield to step up to the plate a bit more than they did last season anyway. I'd also bet good money on the fact that at least half of Cresswell's assists did come from set-pieces, so in that regard I'm sure come the start of the season there will be someone perfectly capable of delivering a good dead-ball.

ITFCRealist a player who was their player of the season the year they got promoted...... who clearly hasnt been given a chance to prove himself again post injury - changes in managment have not helped! as per my post this guy has the potential to be better than Cresswell assuming he can refind form. Im going to give him a chance to actually play a few games for us before I start to speculate on how bad he is...........!!

Great signing...

Very solid.... Can't wait for the ITFC Norwegian supporters reaction to this....
Parr isn't going to expect the reaction he is going to get. Nice surprise for him when he finds out about our magnificent Norwegian following.
is going to get. Nice suprise for him with our magnificent Norwegian following

25 years old, international player and has been Palace's player of the year and a big part of a team that got promoted from our division. I really can't see anything wrong with this signing and for free which lets us spend some of the Cresswell cash in other areas.

Great work from everyone involved in securing such a signing. COYB!!!

More good work by MM and the Club. Like the fact that he made it clear he wanted to come here so now lets hope he can fill Cressys boots. I like the fact that he also has good height for a left back and is an energetic player. As others have said we now need a creative midfielder a goalkeeper and possibly a striker if Didsy struggles with his injury.
