Blues Linked With Henderson Enquiry
Tuesday, 8th Jul 2014 10:57

Town are reported to have shown interest in former loan keeper Stephen Henderson, who has another year left on his contract at West Ham.

According to well-connected West Ham site ClaretandHugh, the Blues made their interest in the 26-year-old known during last week’s talks regarding Aaron Cresswell’s switch to the Hammers with manager Mick McCarthy a big fan of the Irishman.

The sticking point scuppering a potential move is believed to have been Town’s unwillingness to pay more than a quarter of the ex-Portsmouth man’s £20,000-a-week wage.

Meanwhile, the Blues were continuing to pursue their interest in another long-time target, Notts County’s Bartosz Bialkowski, with negotiations regarding that deal understood to still be ongoing.

Henderson, who was initially a Town target during his Pompey days, made 24 appearances for the Blues during two loan spells during the 2012/13 campaign. A possible loan move to Blackburn is reported to have broken down.

A good keeper, I certainly wouldn't moan if he where to return, but from my own personal point of view I'd prefer it a perminant signing than a loan.
I'm still hopeful of the Bialkowski signing, so many Notts County fans have had nothing but great things to say about him. Clearly Webster rates him too. A great addition if we can make it happen. Good healthy competition for the no.1 jersey for Gerks.

Not going to happen Mick move on and get a No.1 keeper on a permanent contract loans are not the answer for goal keepers to many time we've had keepers returned to their clubs and we are back to square one

Only has a year on his contract so guessing it would be with a view to signing him on a free next year. Very good keeper I think and although I do like Gerken, I think Henderson would be an improvement on what we already have!

Season long loan with him becoming a free agent at the end of the year

I'd take him on a season long loan but only without a 24 hour recall. It was too much of a worry with Jonny Williams last season, we were just expecting him to be recalled after every game. I do think we need a proper number 1 if we're to be up there next season.

Need consistency, so would prefer a permanent signing. So one who can establish the number one position not just this coming season but for seasons to come. Season long loan without any recall would be okay, but not guaranteed to stay after that period as wages would still be an issue.

Cant see it happening to be honest. Even if he has a year on loan we'd never afford his wages once he becomes a free agent. 20k a week? We cant afford half that even if we went up

It shows what is wrong with modern football if Henderson is on £20K a week. It's crazy money and Ipswich would be far better looking to a League One player wanting to make a step up such as Bialkowski.

Wonder what Sheff Weds are paying Westwood?

Sounds like clever haggling by Mick, only offer to cover 5k of his wage as a first bid and while we still chase Bialkowski. We can always go back and improve our offer if needed.

I have no problem with us getting a player in on a season-loan when he is in the last year of his contract. I would also say that his wage at West Ham isn't necessarily a stumbling block to us signing him next year, when he'll have to lower his sights for a move down a division anyway.

Mick has proven himself to be very shrewd in the transfer market so far this summer. Long may it continue.

Best keeper we have had here for some time could be the difference between playoff place this season or not .

20K a week! The man should be ashamed of himself! I think this obscene money being paid should stop asap, killing the game, makes my 75 quid a week disability benefit look a sad...

3rd choice keeper on £20k a week or £1m a year?! No wonder football is disappearing up it's own arse.

He's ok, but not worth more than £7k a week and then that would be pushing it.

Agree with the others would not go for a loan keeper, notts co guy sounds a much better option. Now just need a cm and a quality striker. If the club has realistic ambitions of a top 2 finish this is a must,as Joe Royal once said you're only as good as your front two.

If clubs or their owners are prepared to pay these sort of wages you cant blame players for taking them this is small compared to what some are getting its the way of life get as much as you can as quickly as you can i am sure if you were offered a higher salary by your boss you wouldn't say no thanks i am not worth that much would you

It doesn't mention anywhere in the article that we'd definitely be looking to sign him on loan. Is it not possible that we could bargain a deal to buy him outright this summer? Providing he'll accept the lower wages that we are able to offer

Can't really blame Henderson if he is on £20K a week. If you recall he joined West Ham to try and get Pompey out of a mess thus West Ham giving them a decent fee and West Ham signed him to safeguard the 6 points they had taken off Portsmouth which they could have lost had Portsmouth gone into liquidation. I too am not keen on a loan unless there is a no call back clause but don't think we need to worry as no way will we pay half his wages.

........ how many times is this guy going to surface ? - not a bad keeper, but certainly nothing special, and he made it quite clear he didn't want to come to the Club previously when he had the chance, other than on loan.

Let's move on - and leave him to whatever / wherever he can make the biggest buck - which is probably his biggest motivation anyway.

Maybe we should buy the Brazillian goalie. He should be cheap now.

Bill Shankly built a Liverpool winning in 1960 on a total wage of 517 pounds a week.
Would be interesting to know what Mills, Muhren, Mariner earned in 70/80....
Do not get me wrong: when the maximum wage of 20 pounds a week was abolished in 1961 it was a good thing. Players were getting too little. But now it is obscene and disgusting. 20 K a week for keeping fit and being able to kick, control and head a ball. The world has gone crazy.
Something needs to be done about players wages, but at the moment it seems nothing can be done....

would like to see him return.i was one of the ones who when he was here ,who said ,he was not much better than lee barratt, then he seemed to take on our critisism and played out of his skin and made some match winning saves too...yes by all means if we can get him in sign him up.best keeper we've had since begovic!

All these keepers make the odd mistake, Gerks isn't a bad keeper on the whole, I'd bring in this NC keeper which would be good competition for him...
