Town Renew Interest in Garvan
Tuesday, 22nd Jul 2014 14:45

Town have renewed their interest in former midfielder Owen Garvan, whose time at Crystal Palace seems certain to come to an end this summer.

In February, TWTD revealed that the Blues were targeting a loan move for the 26-year-old Dubliner, but the proposed deal broke down as the clubs were unable to agree terms regarding the player’s wages.

Now the South London Press is reporting that Town are one of a number of clubs to have shown interest in Garvan, while the former Ireland U21 international has been spotted around town in recent days - one tweeter apparently selling him a new pair of boots on Sunday - and there are further claims that he has been at Playford Road this week.

Garvan came through the academy at Town - he was a member of the 2005 FA Youth Cup-winning squad - before making his debut in August 2005.

After making 134 starts and 40 sub appearances, scoring 15 goals, he moved on to Palace for £250,000 in the summer of 2010 during George Burley’s spell in charge at Selhurst Park.

Contracted until 2015, the Irishman has made 71 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Eagles, scoring 11 goals, but played only three games for Palace last season, all in the opening month of the campaign.

Having been left out of the Eagles’ 25-man Premier League squad, he joined Millwall late on in the season and made 13 appearances. If he were to join the Blues, Palace would either have to settle his contract or continue to pay a large part of his wages and allow him to move on loan.

Garvan was due to play for Palace's development side at Beckenham at the weekend having been left out of the first-team trip to Austria. However, he missed that game due to an ongoing problem with tendinitis in his knee, but wasn't expected to be out of action for long.

Town currently have several players on trial including French frontman Achille Campion, Hungarian striker Bálint Bajner and French-Mauritian midfielder Kévin Bru, while former Reading, Middlesbrough and Swansea frontman Leroy Lita, 29, is also understood to be with the Blues this week.

Boss Mick McCarthy may choose to give some of them a run-out in either tonight’s development squad friendly at Braintree (KO 7.30pm) or Wednesday’s senior game at Colchester (KO 7.45pm).

Whilst I'd welcome this signing - I fear he'd have to over achieve to stop most moaning about the signing.

Still young + definitely offers something different to the current midfield. As long as we have some pace out wide, he could pick out the pass to make use of the pace.

It's a yes from me!!

and a NO to Leroy Lita.

I'd rather have Leroy from FAME

Yes from me too, but I agree with what you say (Stadiumofdark) about him having to really excel to please.

Nothing personal against Leroy but I just can't see the point in another striker. As for Owen I was gutted when he left and as I live in s.e London I'd give him a lift up to Ipswich.

Anyone else feeling underwhelmed by these rumors? Is it possible to mention my dour feelings this without being accosted by the happy clapping fascists? ;)

Would have him back no problem. Worrying though his continued knee problem.

Definite yes from me also. Would like to see him alongside Skuse in CM with Hyam as backup, but then again maybe Garvan and Skuse would be too similar to play with each other? He would certainly add creativity to our squad which IMO we are desperately needing and with him being available on a free I can't see a negative to signing him. In Mick and TC we trust!

Garvan could definitely still offer us something and always though quite highly of him; Lita on the other hand wouldn't interest me as much.

I think it's a 'yes' from me. I wasn't actually Garvan's biggest fan when he was at Town previously but I think the type of player he is could be an interesting fit in the current team and ethos we have - provided he can stay fit and live up to Mick's standards.

Not so keen on Leroy Lita though. He's starting to enter that 'journeyman' category for me now.

Not sure about garvan, he is def more creative than what we currently have, which is a plus, but he is far too slow and lightweight. If lita is on trial id sign him up quick, good championship striker and def has goals in him at this level

For me Lita would be another gamble on a not as good as he used to be striker (ala Ebanks Blake,McClean etc) that would probably be a total waste of our time & money...i'd rather see Marriott given his opportunity or someone like Campion given a chance to show what he can do.

As for Garvan i'd love to see him back here with a point to prove and to shut a few people up..I guess his fitness will be the main problem.

We will soon have enough trialists to form a team to play our senior team, in between our friendly games ???? then we could pick out the prospects.

Where is the Leroy Lita link coming from folks?

No No No from me. Will only be taking up time on the physio's bench where that may be needed for real players.

One of those players that never fulfilled their early promise. He is however, a creative player with a decent left foot, if a little short on pace. I'm not sure he's a Mick McCarthy type player that gives 100 percent effort at all times.

Would be absolutely delighted with this signing. Garvan is a fantastic passer of the ball, perhaps the creative midfielder we've been looking for? I don't think he ever quite for filled his early potential in his first spell, so would love to see him back. Yes please! COYB

Garvan will never win a 100 metres race but he isn't a snail. He just has a bit of a clumsy running style which makes him appear to be a lot slower than what he is. And anyway, as Gravan lets the ball do all the work he doesn't have to be an Olympian sprinter.
Would like to see Garvan back as he will add composure and creativity to the midfield. Plus with his ability on the ball he will be able to bring Dids and the pacier new wingers into the game.

Garvan had excellent set piece delivery & offers goals plus creativity from Central midfield which are obviously lacking from our team. As long as he stays fit & can agree wages he would be an excellent signing.
Not sure about Lita though as we seem to have enough upfront already

Leroy Lita is only 29? He's been round for ages.... no for me.

Yes please Garvan. We have a nice thing going with Palace don't we :)

RegencyBlue added 15:19 - Jul 22
Garvan offers more creativity wise than we have in midfield at the moment. Having said that it is the fitness issue for me - how many games would we actually get out of him?

Our obvious search for another striker interests me. Either Dids is further away from fitness that we are lead to believe or MM perhaps sees him in a different role?

What would we ever gain by signing LITA.! He never really cuts it wherever he is.What we have is far better, and as for Garvin, not worth the risk.We would never get a full season out of him, shame but true.Having said that a fully Garvin would be great.MM please look elsewhere.COYB

My worry would be his fitness and in particular his knees. Good player and would certainly take him if fit but if we need to have some sort of Ledley King injury management in place I would worry. Id still rather Williams on loan the Grv back for good but I don't think we will get Williams so....

Personally wouldn't touch Leroy with Norwichs'

Did anyone else hear the alarm bells ringing when reading this phrase in the report...

"However, he missed that game due to an ongoing problem..."

I think MM is likely to judge with his head rather than his heart if he does come on trial, I'm not sure everyone on here would necessarily be able to do the same though...

Sindre94 added 15:33 - Jul 22
Not too sure about this one... Not much pace and no "box-box" midfielder as I think we solely miss....

Michael11 added 15:36 - Jul 22
If he's fully fit then he'd be a good addition. He's got an eye for a pass which we do lack in midfield. He's not a usual Mick McCarthy signing though as he's not really a battler.
