McCarthy Confirms Garvan Training With Town
Wednesday, 23rd Jul 2014 22:18

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that former Blue Owen Garvan has been training with the club this week, as TWTD reported yesterday. However, he says that there is as yet nothing happening regarding the Crystal Palace midfielder rejoining his old club.

“Owen’s training with us,” McCarthy said. “He’s not gone away with Crystal Palace. I went to look at him last year and I didn’t think he was right.

“So I just asked Tony Pulis that if he’s not going away with them could I have a look at him because who knows in the future something might happen and then at least I’ve had a look at him.

“He’s been around, he’s a great lad, he’s trained well but nothing’s happening with him, not at the moment.”

Presumably checking his fitness levels before offering any deal which is sensible. Good signing if he's in decent condition but if he's still got glass knee's then I'd look elsewhere!

I was at the game tonight, would prefer Freddy Sears. I am sure Mick would have been impressed by his first half. Wonder how long he's got left on his contract?

Surely Garvan has got more to offer than Hyam. Really bothered if MM sees Hyam as a first choice midfielder.

I can't see Mick playing Garvan in a 442.

Dont think he has the athleticism or work rate to play in a Mccarthy team. He is obviously creative and can pick a pass, injuries would also be a problem too in my opinion

Massive wages are probably the issue here. Owen will be "happy" to sit out for the last year where as MM will want Palace to pay up the remainder of his contract before offering a new one. Sad state of affairs but can't really blame Garvan if he just sits it out.

Wages aren't a problem. I know for a fact that palace will pay him up his contract 2000 percent. Which means he will be able to take a big cut in money. He has no car and wears normal clothing. Nothing flashy and is a very down to eearth guy. This means it is 100 percent down to mick to decide if he is the right man. The only thing is it is abundantly clear that he is in fact not a mccarthy player. I for one would love to see him playing in the cm position however think thats a bit if a ddream rather than anything else

Also any doubters. Arguably one of best players in palace promotion. Better cv that most our team wouldn't you say?

We need a passing midfielder who can take the pace out of the game when we are ahead by keeping the ball , last season we threw away so many points because we could not do this .
Hyam and Skuse have pace in the midfield alongside Garvan .
Pirlo is a prime example of not needing pace as he took England apart again in the summer and was the slowest player on the field , as a country we need to move away from our 100 mile an hour football

You don't need pace in CM if you got vision!

Definitly a no go, never fit in any McCarthy team. He has a football brain for a start. In a 4-4-2 he will be looking for another 3 like Hyam

If Mick doesn't want an attacking midfielder why did he sign Williams last season? Also you lot banging on about 4-4-2 must not go to many games as we didn't play 4-4-2 for a lot of the season, anything in the name of a moan though eh?
