McCarthy Pleased With Second Half Display
Wednesday, 23rd Jul 2014 22:32

Town boss Mick McCarthy was pleased with his side’s second half performance as they beat Colchester 3-0 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, but was less impressed with his team’s display before the break.

“They were very good in the first half, I thought, and I was unhappy with us but we were better in the second half when we sorted a few things out," he said.

“It was organisation. I was a bit annoyed that they couldn’t organise it themselves on the pitch because it was nothing that we don’t do normally.

“But I’ve been there as a player and sometimes it’s all going wrong and you can’t change it and they couldn’t. They needed to come inside and after that we made sure it was sorted out.”

He was happy to see Frank Nouble get on the scoresheet twice and Jack Marriott once after the break: “That was a remarkable turnaround after the first half, that’s for sure.

"Those finishes were good [from Frank] and Jack’s as well. I can’t imagine he was offside for the other one either, that was a strange decision.”

McCarthy says he’s pleased with the way pre-season is progressing: “Everybody’s coming through, we’re all starting to look fitter and sharper, although you wouldn’t have thought that in the first half. But we got stronger, to be fair, and that’s a good sign. I’m pleased with it.”

Thought Henshall looked pretty decent tonight. Murph did well for the 1st goal, great cross from Ando for the 2nd and all 3 finishes were good. Marriott does look like a natural goal scorer, got his shot in early and bottom corner.

Agree ChestnutSE I really liked seeing Henshall running at the opposition I just hope he is encouraged to do it in league games. Second half definitely better but we still have a tendency to wack the ball up the pitch instead of quick passes to feet. Not convinced we will get into the top 6 but would like to be proved wrong

Thought Henshall Berra Marriott Woody and Taylor all had good games.
Also liked Bialkowski's distribution out from back.Made one world class save;but also a rick which would have been punished by better opposition.
Hope after seeming non plussed about Fredi Veseli staying at PR, Mick gives him a chance which dont feel he has had yet.Thought he looked good in midfield last week and again today in a different position;also pleased Mick giving Balint Bajner more time and Lita gone but wonder Phil what is happening to Kevin Bru
and Achille Campion plus the 3 Irish boys?

Veseli should stay better than some who were used pretty often in the team last year also i hope Jack Marriott is not sent out on loan we need him at portman road he is a game winner we were missing last term but will he be given the chance to prove it we will have to wait and see.

Didn't go last night but interesting that Henshall and Veseli are being picked out as was certainly impressed by their performances against west ham. Veseli looks a new player and Henshall wasn't afraid to run at people and get a ball in the box, something we definitely needed last year, let's hope he starts the first game rather than playing hunt just because he runs a lot.

I agree with Mick on Marriott's second goal, it was right in front of us and there was a defender at least level with him when the original shot went in, who was still there when Jack put the ball in the net. Lino just stuck his flag up without thinking, possibly because he had already had a barrage from several Col U players for (correctly) not giving them a goal kick just prior to Nouble's opener.
