Bajner "Undergoing Medical"
Wednesday, 30th Jul 2014 17:52

On-trial striker Balint Bajner is undergoing a medical at Town this evening with his signing set to be announced tomorrow, according to Hungarian reports.

The 23-year-old former Borussia Dortmund B team regular has been with the Blues for more than a week and, according to Nemzetisport, has been successful in his attempt to win a contract at Portman Road.

The 6ft 5in tall frontman, who scored in last night’s 2-1 friendly victory at Southend, is said to be set for a medical and is discussing personal terms, believed to be a two-year deal.

Szombathely-born Bajner played youth football with hometown club Haladás and then FC Sopron in Austria, where he first broke through into senior football.

He joined Romanian club Liberty Oradea in 2007, moving to West Ham on loan for the 2008/09 season, where he featured for their U18s and reserves. However, the Hammers opted not to take up an option to sign him on a permanent basis the following summer.

Bajner, who has been capped by Hungary at U19 level, joined Honved back in Hungary in 2009, then moved on to Italian lower division side ASD Sulmona Calcio in 2011. After a short spell at Hungarian club Bodajk FC Siófok he joined Dortmund in the summer of 2012.

His one substitute appearance for their first team came last season with the rest of his football having been played with their B team in the third tier of German football. While with Dortmund B he scored nine goals and recorded five assists in 52 games.

Bajner came on as a sub in Town's friendly at Colchester and started the game at Gillingham on Saturday before coming off the bench to net in last night’s match at Roots Hall.

Afterwards manager Mick McCarthy said he had been impressed with the striker both against the Shrimpers and throughout his time at the club: “I thought he did well. He’s done well in every game, I feel.

“I’m really pleased with him. He’s only 23 and I think he’s got improvement in him. We’ll see, he’s done OK. We’ll continue to monitor him, definitely.”

Town also have French-Mauritian midfielder Kevin Bru on trial, who has also caught McCarthy’s eye: “Kevin’s done fine, I’ve been delighted with him.

"He’s a really good player, I think. The game the other day was only his second game in the last three or four months, so he was feeling a bit shattered.

“I wanted to get Teddy Bishop on, that’s why I took him off. Kevin’s done really well, I’m very pleased with him.”

Solid signing given his performances so far. Certainly not an out and out goal scorer but good cover for Murphy and seems to play a similar role.

Now get Bru signed up and pair him with Skuse or better still Wordsworth

McGoldrick when fit and Banjo could be a very very good front two!

From what's been said he certainly couldn't have done much more to earn a deal so I'm glad we'll give him a chance. Hopefully could be a gem picked out from no where. What happened with Southend's equaliser? Did the keeper let it under them? Hard to tell from that video!

Ive seen him play at Colchester where he did very well and nearly scored, to not so well against Gillingham and set up Hyams goal and now hes scored an absolute cracker at Southend....He might just turn out to be that creative midfield option we've lacked for so long ;) nice one Mick!

I don't know very much about him, but am pleased we have signed another striking option. Murphy and Nouble have hardly been prolific this pre season or generally for us. I wish him well (if he signs).

I've not seen him play yet and opinion seems divided on the forum from those who have.

Hope this works out!

@Michael11 Watching it in 1080p fullscreen I think it deflected off the defender, but I can't be certain.

I'm trembling with anticipation.......................9 in 52 games, just what we needed another prolific goal scorer, glad we haven't wasted time looking at any players from the lower leagues just because they score a lot of goals.

Personally, from what I've heard, I'm quite pleased this trial seems to be resulting in something. While the proof will be in the Championship pudding, it's encouraging to see us reaching out for European talent in addition to the likes of Henshall/Mings/Hewitt we've found in this country under Mick. And after all, he had to have something about him to be on Dortmund's books.

Beattiesballbag - not all lower division strikers with decent scoring records can cut it at championship level.

Loved how he milked his goal for all his worth in front of us all last night. His scoring record suggests we might be the only few to witness such an event for a while, but let's hope he can score more regularly at PR. Welcome to Ipswich!

Pleased for him and I hope he gets his chance, and as mick says at 23 he has a lot of potential, nice to see us explore Europe for talent as well as England something which we haven't done in a long time.
Also I don't see how fans are saying that we need another prolific striker? And a natural goalscorer? Well let's look at the facts. Didsy last season if he hadn't of got injured would of easily gone onto get 20, that would be 10 years since we have had a 20 goal a season striker (Bent, Kuqi) Also Daryl Murphy weighed in with 14 goals last season and compared with other teams in the league last year you can't say that other teams front two hit that tally between them. The fact that we didn't have a 20 goal a season striker was bemoaned for years and years and now we have strikers who get a lot of goals between some fans still aren't satisfied.
Also I'm not too bothered about the need for the creative midfielder option. The fact is last season we had Anderson and Tabb/Hunt on the wings which is no denying they couldn't get beyond their man and put balls into the box, MM has seen this and has gone and got Cameron Stewart, a pacey winger who loves to take on full backs and also henshall who can be described exactly the same, yes we may not see both of them play at the same time often but our team now has a lot more attacking intent, and not to forget you don't get many more attacking left backs than Jonny Parr who is also an excellent addition. With two holding midfielders as long as they spread the balls to the wings I have no worries that the attacking 4 possibly of Stewart, Henshall, Didsy and Murphy can produce a lot of excitement.
And besides unless you play 4-3-3 there is no room for an out and out creative midfielder as if he is caught out of position the lad playing alongside him has got to be very fit and also be able to cover his position. We don't necessarily need a player who can thread the ball through the eye of the needle, it's simply all about moving the ball as quick as possible when in their half from side to side to get crosses in or into the strikers feet and runners coming off them, with that in mind I don't see the great need for a creative midfielder as so many many people desperately do.

Hope that in the right environment he can develop. So far (only Colchester for me to judge) he's been ok, but not more. One knock-down header for someone (can't remember who) caught my eye, but admittedly your man didn't really get the opportunities in that match to show much else. However, obviously MM has seen something, as even in the current bargain basement climate, I doubt he would have signed a player if he did not believe that player could add something to the squad. So welcome, Balint, and good luck!

Don't mean to sound too negative, but 9 goals in 52 games in the German 3rd division doesn't sound like much to get excited about.
