Bajner Confirms Town Deal
Wednesday, 30th Jul 2014 21:43

Trialist striker Balint Bajner appears to have confirmed that he is joining the Blues via social media and is reported to have agreed a two-year deal at Portman Road. The 23-year-old Hungarian is understood to have undergone a medical at Town earlier this evening.

Asked whether he was joining Town by a fan on Instagram, Bajner responded. “Yes, of course. Thank you for the question.”

The 23-year-old former Borussia Dortmund B team regular has been with the Blues for more than a week and, according to Sky Sports, has agreed a two-year deal. Town appear likely to announce the signing on Thursday.

The 6ft 5in tall frontman, who scored in last night’s 2-1 friendly victory at Southend, was born in
Szombathely and played youth football with hometown club Haladás and then FC Sopron in Austria, where he first broke through into senior football.

He joined Romanian club Liberty Oradea in 2007, moving to West Ham on loan for the 2008/09 season, where he featured for their U18s and reserves. However, the Hammers opted not to take up an option to sign him on a permanent basis the following summer.

Bajner, who has been capped by Hungary at U19 level, joined Honved back in Hungary in 2009, then moved on to Italian lower division side ASD Sulmona Calcio in 2011. After a short spell at Hungarian club Bodajk FC Siófok he joined his most recent club Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2012.

His one substitute appearance for their first team came last season with the rest of his football having been played with their B team in the third tier of German football. While with Dortmund B he scored nine goals and recorded five assists in 52 games.

Bajner came on as a sub in Town's friendly at Colchester and started the game at Gillingham on Saturday before coming off the bench to net in last night’s match at Roots Hall.

Afterwards manager Mick McCarthy said he had been impressed with the striker both against the Shrimpers and throughout his time at the club: “I thought he did well. He’s done well in every game, I feel.

“I’m really pleased with him. He’s only 23 and I think he’s got improvement in him. We’ll see, he’s done OK. We’ll continue to monitor him, definitely.”

Town also have French-Mauritian midfielder Kevin Bru on trial and the 25-year-old has also caught McCarthy’s eye: “Kevin’s done fine, I’ve been delighted with him.

"He’s a really good player, I think. The game the other day was only his second game in the last three or four months, so he was feeling a bit shattered.

“I wanted to get Teddy Bishop on, that’s why I took him off. Kevin’s done really well, I’m very pleased with him.”

We already have 5 strikers
Was this this our main priority? I don't think so.

Seems good news to me. Welcome to ITFC.

I can't pronounce his place of birth, previous club or name yet though! Is there are Hungarian Blue out there somewhere to help?

I'm sure someone will dream up a decent song in time too.

I shall call him Banjo.

Excellent news. It's another striker that we probably needed, and he looks like he's got something about him.

I presume he will just be back up for Murphy as they are similar players. Looks a decent player and worth a go on a free having impressed during pre season. Wonder if bru will be signed?

And we need strikers because last year we didn;t have enough depth. Maybe MM will start with Murphs/McG but if thats not working then back up will be essential. I don't think Frank is good enough and Taylor hasn't shown much so far so expect Marriott/Bajner to be given a chance. Happy days hopefully!!

Try the Boncho Guenchev song .... it works! Hopefully Balint will score a few like our Bulgarian used to.

Good to see Mick building on last year's squad. COYB.

Makes his celebration against Southend all worthwhile. :)

Welcome, mate. I would sing your name from the rooftops but I'd probably pronounce it wrong.

If it provides competition and encourages Nouble and Taylor to raise their games then it can't be a bad thing. Hopefully it won't be at the expense of sending Marriott out on loan as I think he's ready for our first team bench now regularly.

Good, from what I have seen live and on film definitely better than Frank Nouble, although thats not difficult.I know big Frank scored two at Colchester, but dont think he did so well at Southend;and anyway was hopeless in first half at Col U.
I am more optimistic about this season than I have been for several years;but realise that the real test will come next month.
Like JAS would still like us to strengthen;but feel that one more Jonny Williams type player will suffice, with hopefully the likes of Bishop, Marriott,Wyatt,McQueen,Hewitt,Henshall and Stewart also getting some game time especially as they are nippy young and talented.
It would also be nice for Mick to be allowed one signing for money instead of loans and other clubs rejects;so come on Marcus just the one even though you are subsidising the Youth set up to the tune of £750k p.a.

Welcome to town Balint, great goal against southend, at 6 ft 5 adds real presence up front and would love to see him in "beast mode" he will provide an ariel threat up front and help defend set pieces. Got a feeling Bru might get a deal too and apart from a couple of loans from prem clubs and at a stretch Garvan signing thats us done. COYB

It looks like Bajner is the sort of player that will link the midfield with Attack and can play out wide if needed to....I imagine that he'll have more goal assists than goals come the end of this season....?

Didz
Murph
Noobs
Tayls
Badger
Marriott

I'm guessing that one if not two of these will end up going out on loan?
Having at least 4 good strikers in any Championship team is a hallmark of a promotion contender...? ;)

If he fulfils his potential a front two of Bajner and McGoldrick could be a real threat. I imagine Murphy is still first in line behind McGoldrick but will be hard pushed by Bajner hopefully. Nouble continues to polarise opinions, flashes of brilliance, hard working, but sometimes just does not look like a consistent performer at this level, could find himself down the pecking order this season...

Well he's obviously held his own in training against the best defence in the world, mm has obviously seen something in him, so good luck to the lad, he's on a free probably on low wages, if he turns out to be a Nikolai Zigic then you say hey ho he was a free at the end of the day or he could turn out to be an Edin Dzeko. We shall wait and see, that's if he gets a game.

That was a great finish in the video, worth a punt. Perhaps at 6"5 he is more suited to our team than Dortmund B - TC should get him firing!

TheSelkirk - i suppose Balint is not a problem, and Bajner is pronounced like "Buy-nehr" - there's a tough R at the end ;)
