McCarthy: Duo Impressed Everyone
Friday, 1st Aug 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says new duo Balint Bajner and Kevin Bru impressed everyone at Portman Road during their trial spells, including the other players. Yesterday, the pair signed one-year deals with the option of a further season after spending just over a week at the club.

“Balint was at Borussia Dortmund, he’s a big 6ft 5in tall striker. He scored a great goal the other night at Southend,” McCarthy said.

“Kevin’s a midfield player who looks a really gifted footballer. He was in the school of excellence at Clairfontaine, he’s got a good background to him.

“Sometimes people drift for a while and I’m hoping that he can give us something. He looks a nice, talented, positive footballer who plays forward passes. Both of them have impressed all of us, the lads included.”

Despite Bajner being so tall, McCarthy believes that he’s not a typical big striker and, although he says he has some ability in the air, feels that he could improve that aspect of his game.

“He’s not just an aerial target, I think actually he’s got to get better at that,” he said. “And I think he will because he actually wants to head it. There’s something to work with, I’m sure.”

The Town boss is in no hurry to add anyone else to his squad, previously having said he will look at taking Premier League youngsters on loan when they become available, which he expects to be towards the end of the transfer window.

“I’m not rushing out looking to sign anybody but things can change, players can move still,” he added. “If they do, once I start picking my team and people are not happy and if I can change it, freshen it up, I’ll do it.”

He says no one is currently on the verge of leaving the club: “There are nine days to go, so I don’t know, but there’s nothing pending, nothing hot of the press at the moment.”

The Blues manager says he’s happy with his squad with almost all of last year’s players still at the club: “I’m delighted that I kept most of them from last season. I think they’re better and they’ve progressed.

“And we’ve added the players that we have, a couple of wingers, Alex Henshall and Cameron Stewart, the two we’ve just signed, Kevin Bru and Balint Bajner.

"The goalkeeper, Bart, has impressed everyone, this morning as well. If I've forgotten someone, I'm sure they'll forgive me. I’m happy with the ones I’ve got in."

Looking good for the new season. I predict 6th spot depending on how we start. we need to hit the ground running for a change. back to back wins need to become standard. And no silly defensive slips please

Still a bit concerned that we are relying so heavily on McGoldrick for goals. Just hope he stays fit!!

But even though guys you build from the back and we're certainly one of the strongest defences in the league. Not only good defenders and gk but a settled system for them to work in.

Just needed a few more goals last year and I reckon that could e coming!

Shouldn't it be 'hot off the press'?

I agree with Floridaboy .. we are really reliant on Dids to score or create and he is not fully fit to start the season .
I also personally thought our defence was better the second half of the season before last when we had a natural right back playing in Stearman , thought we were undone a lot last season with Chambers there

Surco you do realise that Stearman was a centre back playing out of position at right back, so was not any different to Chambers. He may have coped with the role slightly better than chambers did at times but he wasn't and isn't a natural right back

The lack of replacement for Williams, the type of player we were desperately crying out for last season, is a real issue. I can't see goals in central midfield and teams that get promoted generally have a ten goal a season midfielder.

All other areas covered.
