Town XI Win at Chelmsford
Friday, 1st Aug 2014 23:22 by James Ager

A young Town XI beat Vanarama Conference South side Chelmsford City 4-2 in a pre-season friendly at Melbourne Park on Friday evening, with a brace from Darren McQueen (pictured) and strikes from Teddy Bishop and Byron Lawrence securing the win.

Mark Kennedy's side took an eighth-minute lead when McQueen lashed home a volley from 25 yards after the ball fell kindly for him.

The hosts twice came close to equalising with Mark Hughes dragging a shot just wide before Luke Callander got the better of George Fowler and lifted his effort just over the bar.

Clarets stopper Niklas Freund did well to keep out Lawrence's fierce drive but he was powerless to prevent McQueen doubling Town's advantage on 24. The former Spurs youngster was played in on goal by strike partner Monty Patterson and coolly finished past Freund.

The Essex side pulled a goal back two minutes later - Marvin Ekpiteta's ball over the top allowed Callander to shrug off Fowler and slot the ball between Michael Crowe's legs.

Town started the second half well and restored their two-goal advantage five minutes after the restart. Sub Shane McLoughlin cut the ball back from the right which allowed Patterson to tee up Teddy Bishop, who stroked the ball into the net from 12 yards.

Omar Sowunmi's chipped through ball presented Cemal Ramadan with a great chance to score, but sub keeper Max Hunter came out to block his goalbound effort.

Ramadan was involved in Town's fourth on 70 minutes - volleying Ben Wyatt's deep cross back across goal for Lawrence to head home from close range.

The home side scored the final goal of the game give minutes later when Christian Smith curled a fine left-footed free-kick around the Town wall and past Crowe.

Town put in a solid performance against a physical Chelmsford side, which included recently released Blues midfielder Amir Berkane and Joe Ward, who spent time on trial at Playford Road last summer. Bishop caught the eye in midfield, while McQueen took his two goals extremely well.

Meanwhile, the Blues' U18s are in friendly action against Watford at Playford Road on Saturday morning (KO 11am).

Town XI: Crowe, Robinson (Emmanuel 61), Wyatt, Willbye (Benyu 65), Fowler, Sowunmi, Galvin (McLoughlin 46), Bishop, McQueen, Patterson (Ramadan 61), Lawrence. Unused: McDermid.

Hopefully the U21's will have a better season with a few pushing on the 1st teams door? If these players think they have a chance of 1st team squad they will perform better, something that was missing last season. The U21's had no direction last year but even MM now understands the importance of players coming through to achieve the Cat.1 Status.

This McQueen seems to know where the back of the net is. Seems to score nearly every game he plays in.

McQueen has certainly made a positive start to his Town career. I like the idea of have good finishers coming through, which he seems to be. We have had a fair few 'useful' forwards over recent years without ever having out & out poacher type goalscorers. Even McGoldrick, who I wouldn't swap for any Championship rival forward at the moment, is more an intelligent hold up, lay off, great touch, scorer of great goals from distance type - hence the suggestions of playing him in a midfield or deep role - rather than getting on the end, tap em home from 3 yards striker.
Marriott also looks like he can be that type of poacher with calm & tidy finishes, so hopefully at least one of them will progress to first team regular.
Byron Lawrence seems to have played well here again, which doesn't surprise me. I've always liked him & expected him to break through, but it doesn't look like he is seen as first team material & time is moving on for him unfortunately.
Teddy Bishop is looking like a real prospect though.

Baron Lawrence has played well every time I have seen him play. He can do no more and just hope his chance comes

I would but Byron Lawrence on the bench over Jay Tabb any day if the week!

Great result. McQueen sounds like a decent player who knows were the net is.

On the other hand good information about Chelmsford for me as my local team who I hold a season ticket for play them away next week in the opening game.

Remember watching Lawrence for town U15s against united in the showcase game that year and he was the best player on the park, so good technically and he must only of improved since then, just hopes he gets his chance as he has too much ability to not be given one. Bishop is looking a good prospect too and I even felt he held his own against west ham against the likes of Mark Noble in midfield, very good technically and puts himself about which may be the thing stopping Byron getting his chance.
