Stewart to Miss First Six Weeks of the Season
Monday, 4th Aug 2014 20:06

Recent signing Cameron Stewart is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after fracturing his jaw during Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw at Leyton Orient.

“Cameron was caught by an arm late on in the game on Saturday and the scan has shown that he has fractured his jaw,” Blues physio Matt Byard told the club site.

“He will have surgery in the morning and we will see where we stand from there but for that type of injury, you are looking at between four to six weeks on the sidelines.”

Stewart joined the Blues on a free transfer in July having been released by Hull City after a proposed switch to his former loan side Leeds broke down.

In addition to Stewart, fellow winger Stephen Hunt was absent for all Town’s pre-season games with a calf injury and will also miss Saturday’s season opener at home to Fulham (Sky Sports 1/HD1, KO 5.15pm).

Tommy Smith and Paul Anderson were left out of the team at Brisbane Road due to groin and hamstring injuries respectively but on Saturday manager Mick McCarthy said he expected them to be OK for the Cottagers’ visit, while Jonny Parr suffered a groin problem against the O’s.

Meanwhile, former Blue Scott Barron has been forced to hang up his boots at the age of 28 due to a hip problem.

The left-back or midfielder came through the academy at Playford Road and broke into the Town first team under Joe Royle, making 16 starts and one sub appearance before moving on to Millwall in 2007. He was most recently with Brentford.

Damn. Hope he gets back soon. We could have done without this.

Why oh why do clubs play so many friendlies?
Every season the same, injuries before a ball is kicked in a match that actually matters!

Grizzle over, I hope he recovers soon as he could be the bright attacking spark we desperately need.

It's a shame we have picked up a few injuries so late in pre season. Def not good with the start of the season on saturday!! Makes our small squad even smaller. Still need a couple of additions, either perm or season long loans. Hard luck for Stewart too. I'm sure he will add some much needed pace and trickery to our fairly pedestrian midfield. Get well soon!!

This is the problem with having such a small squad. I'd like Henshall to start on the wing, but with Stewart now out we're definitely going to be seeing Tabb on the wing, being out of position. Hopefully it's only the 4 weeks he's out for, big blow these injuries. Get well soon Stewart!

That's a big blow. McCarthy must be delighted. He actually has an excuse to play his old mate Tabby.

I would prefer to see us play games against tougher opposition ,not league 1 and lower. We played west ham and in terms of time without the ball that was the greatest challenge ,i see no point in what we have done in terms of preparation. Now we have a few out and a few limping ,its going to be a tough enough 1st month without our creativity suffering. We are playing Fulham at the best time ,, but will we create chances ,retain the ball and play short not long. Hmm i do hope for entertainment but fear dogged .

He looked short of match fitness anyway and has a lot to prove yet to get in the first team. Henshall is much closer to featuring.

If the squad gets much smaller Mick will be getting his boots on...err perhaps not, we need flair!

Didz not fit. Stewart injured, Henshall blamed for penalty so wont start and Bru and BB will be seen as too risky to play yet by Mick. Step forward Tabb, Hyam, Skuse and Nouble!

I'd love to be proved wrong, but cant see us getting much from our first few games.

Disappointing news. However, I have been saying for a long time that this small squad is not big enough to sustain a promotion challenge. Already down on the squad size that finished last season, we now have injuries ... Before a ball is kicked. With McGoldrick not match fit, hunt and Stewart out and question marks over Smith, Anderson and Parr ... Taylor out of favour, it really does show how weak we are. Promotion? Not unless we sign some more players. Williams hasn't been replaced, nor have last seasons other loans. Injuries have kicked in. All this despite the broken promises of the Cresswell money available for players ... Yet we have fewer than last year. Thus could be another tough season. Sadly. Can now see why MM was bugging Tabb up earlier ... He has few options left.

Need to sign at least 4 more players if we are going to be in contention for play-offs.
Most other squads in this league have excellent replacements when someone is injured/ill in most positions on the pitch.
We have a VERY small squad.......

Anyone got any guesses for the starting line up then for Saturday?

My guess is:
Gerken
Chambers Smith (if fit!) Berra Mings
Anderson Wordsworth Skuse Tabb
Nouble Murphy

Maybe even bring in Matthew Etherington on a pay-as-you-play basis to cover Stewart. If he does well add to team.

Squad is too thin and many more injuries early on in the season could cause us a problem.

Still need 3 or 4 in my view!

ArnieM - You are so right! Why don't we all see how it goes for the first few games. We are in serious debt - we're not getting a big squad so get used to it. It will be another solid unspectacular season.
