Mings: Fulham Win Showed What We're All About
Monday, 11th Aug 2014 06:00

Left-back Tyrone Mings believes Saturday’s live-on-Sky 2-1 victory over former Premier League side Fulham will have shown the rest of the Championship what Town are all about.

"That throws down a marker in the Championship. Fulham came here and found out quite quickly how hard it is,” the 21-year-old said.

”It was on the television and it showed teams that Ipswich are hard to beat and we can score goals, when the chances come we can tuck them away.

"Fulham never really had any options once they realised they could not play their way through us.

"They had their diamond formation but never got much joy out of that and when they went wide they got no joy out of that either."

Mings was delighted to see David McGoldrick get back on the scoresheet after six months out with a knee injury, last season’s 16-goal top scorer adding Town's second goal just after the hour, Daryl Murphy having netted the opener on 32.

"It was great for McGoldrick to come back in that manner,” Mings said. “It was a great boost for him and it lifted the team as well.

”The first goal settled us down and the second goal helped and gave us a cushion.

"After they scored it gave them some momentum but it showed the character we have among the whole team how we held out and it showed the resilience the whole squad has.”

Mings has a chance to establish himself at left-back with Aaron Cresswell departing for West Ham in the summer and new signing Jonny Parr missing the start of the season with a groin injury.

Was filling Cresswell’s boots difficult? "He is only a size seven, so it wasn’t that hard!," he joked.

“No, me and Cressy have different attributes and I don't really compare myself to him or base my game on what he did.

"I don't look at stepping into his shoes, more my playing my own game. If I can get forward and put in crosses, which help the team then that is great."

"I felt I held my own. I did it against Reading [on the opening day] last season when they had just come down but got injured, which wasn't the plan but now I have played against Fulham and it went well.

"Everyone is buzzing, but we have 45 games to go so we will see what happens."

Bigoiconnor.... Totally agree with you, looked a weak link in our defence . Hopefully he will grow into it though...COYB

Decent back up to Parr.

I 100% agree. From the start, Mings looked completely out of his depth. However, seeing the likes Hyam, Hewitt, Smith all have good games was particularly pleasing. Hyam to be tones best player this season, mark my words! COYB

Bajner looked out of his depth.
Mings is a good young player learning his trade.

I disagree. Not a lot got past him apart from that one occasion when his foot slipped on the turf and he hurt himself (you can't blame the player for that). Some very good, solid tackles. Especially given the pressure from Fulham at various points in the game.

The lad likes to get forward,so he will get caught out from time to time, but as already said, the only time he did get caught was when he slipped.

He has had some good games for Town and has a real presence about him.

Could be one of our big success stories this season

He is a young lad learning his trade. Whether he should be doing that in a Championship side is another question entirely. But while he is we should back him as there is no doubt he is a very talented player.

He just needs to ensure whilst going forward, he can do the defensive part as well.

To say he was out of his depth is harsh, even inaccurate. He didn't have a bad game at all & certainly gave a performance that indicates he has the ability to be a Championship regular.
Having said that he is not the finished article by any means & needs more experience of playing at this level. There are weaknesses which have been exploited & will be again by decent players, so he needs to get his head down & work hard. Maybe a fit Parr is the better option, but he's only going to improve by playing & putting into practice what he learns in training against good players in competitive matches.

I agree with Pennblue and Len. And also remember the slating Tommy Smith used to get. The club persisted with him and reaped the benefits. Yes, Parr should possibly get the nod, yes Mings wasn't brilliant, but it was far from the worst performance I've ever seen.

To say he looked out of his depth is a ridiculous and harsh thing to say, did you even see the game? He played ok, he wasn't motm but he did alright. Both teams played quite narrow and as full back he had to push on a bit, that's a tough ask for a young prospect and I think he did pretty well. As MM said he'd run himself into the ground come the end of the game and didn't leave anything on the field. Very proud if our youngsters and graduates helping us get a good win. Well done. COYB!!

I thought he did okay. He will have to play a more defensive game against out and out wingers but he certainly didn't look out of place on Saturday.

Cresswell was not that good when he first came here!

Wow. I said he looked out of his depth. I didn't say he was totally useless or that he couldn't improve. What's wrong with you lot?

I wouldn't say he was out of his depth but he did look like a rabbit caught in the headlights for the first 30 minutes of the game. When he got the ball it did seem like a hot potato that he had to get rid of quickly.

In the second half when Town pressed more, he looked comfortable going forward, but he has to get back into position quicker when we lose the ball.

He needs to practice dead ball delivery as well, so we don't have to rely on Tabb all the time. I thought Tabby played OK except for his delivery from free kicks which were abysmal.

Agree with comments that suggest he struggles to get up to the pace of the game. Tackles were strong ... but to be honest his first yellow could have been his second with a harsher ref (there are some out there) and we can't afford to have players getting booked every game.

I like him as a player though abs just asi defended Tommy Smith, I will fight his corner. ... even if he may well be on the bench when Parr is fit

bigolconnor. What is wrong with us lot is that we do not like total inaccuracies or the slighting of good young players who are giving their heart while trying to learn their game at this level. What effect do you consider your words will have on that young lad when he reads them? You are well noted for ridiculous, unconsidered opinions and almost certainly are also one of those who used to slate Smithy and Hyam when they started. Get a grip man.

He's got all the elements and will improve as he plays. Don't judge him now as the finished article.

Also, he's tough, quick and from what I've seen a great crosser of the ball!

If any question needed to be asked about players then it's Skuse
He's so damn lightweight and doesn't do much that's really effective!
Just ran around mostly chasing an opposing shadow, 2 shots over the bar was about his contribution.
Parker ran the midfield show, just like a Magilton used to. And that is what Ipswich need.
Skuse is even worse than what Jermaine Wright was as an effective midfield player, basically he adds nothing, just a mundane player.

Hewitt did a decent job in midfield and didn't look out of place there.
Playing Skuse and Hyam together from the start of matches is our Achilles heel, which a good organised team would exploit and turn into goals.
Fulhams forwards were pretty poor overall.
We were lucky they didn't have Bent and Berbatov on the pitch.

cats_whiskers, I couldn't disagree with you more. Skuse is a good player, his job isn't to score goals, he gets the ball down and plays it, rarely gives it away. He wins headers in the midfield which is something we've always lacked. His work rate and defending are second to none. He was Bristol City captain for 4 years too so the leadership aspect comes in also. Every midfield needs its anchor, and he's ours. Hyam is the one that should be scoring/assisting, hes the one that needs to improve.

I thought that he had a very solid game. Our defence struggled as a whole when young Patrick Roberts came on, and you could see that Fulham were trying to isolate him against Tyrone.

If there was any flaky defending, it came from the visitors. The inexperienced Jesse Joronen could have done better for our first goal, and Shaun Hutchison - their supposed strong link at the back - won't want to look at the DVD of that game again.

Billblue. What a total @&££ as if Tyrone Mings cares, have you seen his twitter. I wasn't "slighting " him either. And don't assume I dissed Hyam and smith either to make yourself look bluer or something.

Yeah, the fact of having no positional sense and that when he does move forward has no one covering his absence, leaving a lovely pocket of space for the right midfielders and right wingers to attack.
Which side does Nathan Redmond play for Norwich, as he'll have a lot of fun down the right side if that's where he plays??

Jermaine Wright was a very effective midfield player. And I agree with myself on that.
