Boss Delighted With Debutant Clarke
Friday, 15th Aug 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with 17-year-old Matt Clarke’s performance as he made his senior debut from the start in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup tie at Crawley.

McCarthy says the former Claydon High School pupil didn't put a foot wrong: “Everything he did, the fact that from minute one when I said ‘Clarkey, can you play left-back?’ and he went, ‘yes, no problem if needed, of course’. There wasn’t any hesitation or ‘I’m not so sure’.

“I didn’t have any worries about him and I thought he handled it with aplomb. He was composed with the ball, he defended really well, he headed it, physically he coped with the tough, physical presence of older, more senior players.

“And he was really positive with the ball, he was composed whenever he had it. His all-round performance was assured and he’s secured himself a place in my squad.

“I was already considering that he’s my fourth centre-back, and that’s what he is. If I have problems, I’ll play him.”

He says Town’s more senior players weren’t afraid to pass to the Barham-based second-year scholar: “It doesn’t take long for players to work out who’s comfortable with the ball, believe me, and whether they pass it to them or otherwise.

“It’s a testament to the way he started, they were more than comfortable and happy to give him it. They trusted him with it.”

McCarthy was annoyed that Town lost the tie 1-0 in extra-time, partly because it means the likes of Clarke and Teddy Bishop won’t get another similar opportunity to play.

“As always if we lose I’m angry and frustrated,” he added. “I was frustrated really because we should have won the game, we had enough chances to win the game and we had enough possession to have created more chances, which we didn’t do.

“So that frustrated me, some of our play. Certainly missing chances frustrated me. But as I said afterwards, in two weeks’ time when we haven’t got a game, it won’t be bothering me too much because you saw what I had to do with the squad.

“But what really did frustrate me is not having a chance to give Alex Henshall another start, to give Clarkey another start, maybe even to start Teddy Bishop because I thought he was great when he came on.

“So, it would have been nice to have another game to give them another competitive game.”

He continued: “What do I say to them now? I go down and tell them ‘well done, you did everything I asked of you’ and they’ll be training with the first team squad mainly.

“They’re part of it and if I need them, which with the squad that we have they might be called upon.”

The Town boss says he currently has no plans to send Clarke or Bishop out on loan to gain experience: “Not at the moment. They’ll play in the U21 games and train with the first team and I may need them. It’s a fairly hectic start to the campaign.

“Clarkey’s had one game, he played really well, let’s give him a chance to find his feet and continue playing as well as that.”

Have to say that for me, Bishop, Clarke and Henshall are standout youngsters.Their abilities for their ages hasn't been seen around the club for ages. Long may that continue.

Totally agree with MM. Clarke was superb, very dominant and not afraid of some powerful tackling. Bishop was very good too, but not overly impressed with Henshall's efforts.

Henshall is potentially an exciting player:very pacey, prepared to take on full backs on the outside but is a bit "head down" and his final ball was poor on Tuesday.
He was also a bit shot shy, dribbling into good positions but then running out of steam. He will only get better.

Matt Clarke looks an excellent prospect. Thought he was very good against Wet Spam as well, which was very impressive for a 17-year-old. It does feel as though we are beginning to bring some good youngsters through again, but we have all seen good prospects in the past who for some reason didn't seem to go on and make it. I don't think this will happen to Matt Clarke, though. If he stays injury-free, the future looks very bright indeed.

Mick insisted on playing Nouble for 120 minutes. Who's fault was it really we lost?

Great to see a good crop of young talent starting to breakthrough again..it's been a while.
The future's looking brighter..shame we went out of the cup as it would've meant the young 'uns getting another game in the Next round.

If MM is concerned about the youngsters getting game time in the first team, he should have one or two of them on the bench for every match. Then, if we are either winning well or losing badly (ie nothing to lose), he can bring on one of them for the last few minutes. That way, they will have the opportunity not only to be part of the match day squad, but will get playing time as well.

My concern is if he got his chance when a senior player was injured and played well, he would be dropped when that player came back from Injury - look what happened when Loach got a chance last season , kept a clean sheet MOM , Gerks striaght back next game. I like MM bit he sure got his fav's

Surely if we has got through he would have played his best eleven at the carrot patch?

Steve70: The problem with what you seem to be suggesting is that MM would pick the starting eleven according to how well the players performed in the last match. Surely the right way is to have consistency in selecting the first eleven, then they all get used to playing together as a team and to have the confidence that the back up players can perform well when needed to step in. I'm sure we all remember how RK in particular of our recent managers changed the team from match to match - look where that got us!

big gaz67 - if we had got through, we wouldn't have played Norwich because of seeding.

Agree with Mick's sentiments about Matt Clarke. He had a very promising debut. I Liked Teddy Bishop and Alex Henshall too. Shame we had a donkey up front
