Henshall: No City Regrets
Friday, 15th Aug 2014 06:00

Alex Henshall insists he has no regrets about his failure to make the breakthrough at previous club Manchester City.

It was from the Premier League champions that the 20-year-old winger moved to Town on a free transfer in the summer, having spent the latter stages of last season on loan at Portman Road without making a first team appearance.

Henshall was just 16 and not long out of school when he left hometown club Swindon to join mega-rich City with dreams of lining up alongside some of the world’s top stars.

He said: “I have no regrets about going to City. I don’t believe you should regret anything in your career. I got on with everyone there but they are in a position to go out and buy whoever they want so it was difficult. I enjoyed my time there and I have some good memories as well.

“Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson before him said young English players probably shouldn’t join a club like Manchester City because they are obviously big spenders. But I learned a lot in my time there.

“I trained quite a lot with the first team when Roberto Mancini was in charge. It wasn’t much fun to have someone like Yaya Toure running at me but lads like James Milner and Micah Richards were really good with me and helped me a lot.

“When Mancini left and Manuel Pellegrini came in everything changed quite drastically and I was kind of more pushed out of the door. That’s just what happens in football but overall I benefited on the technical side from my time there.

“I was only a young lad when I went there and I knew it was my time to go last season because I wasn’t really getting any further with my career.

“The gaffer and TC helped me out quite a lot when I was on loan here last season and now that I’ve signed permanently I just want to get into the squad and stay there.”

From what little I've seen of him, I think he could be a vital part of our future and Man City's loss is definately our gain.

Yeah, all I've seen was at the Crawley game. Very quick and skilful, but seemed to be reluctant to get the ball in the box. Nonetheless, this is the exact sort of player we want at the club and I can't wait to see more of him...

Plenty of promise for the future. Henshall must be quite near a starting spot already. Hope there will be a real end-product a little further down the line. If that's the case, it could be a very good one. Must make more career sense playing for a proper club than a showbusiness outfit.

It's nearly impossible for these young players going to big clubs like man city to even come close to getting some games so it seems odd that so many players do it. But on the other hand must be hard to turn down the opportunity to train alongside some of the best in the world with fantastic facilities at your disposal. Tough decision for any young player to make, but if Henshall makes it with us then I don't think he has anything to regret
