McCarthy: Tyrone's Doing Great
Wednesday, 27th Aug 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’s happy with the way left-back Tyrone Mings has settled into the season having taken over from Aaron Cresswell following his summer move to West Ham, even if the 21-year-old believes he could be doing better. Cresswell joined the Hammers in July for an initial £3.75 million with the fee potentially rising to £7 million after top-ups.

“Tyrone is a lovely kid and I think he thinks he could do better,” McCarthy said. “But I’ve said to him that you don’t replace a £4 million left-back with somebody we got from Chippenham for 10 grand or whatever it was and expect it just to be seamless, because it doesn’t happen.

“We lost a guy who had played [79 games] for Tranmere, a lot of football in the league, then came here and finished his education and now he’s gone on to West Ham, deservedly so. Ty’s in that first bit of his education and he’s doing great.”

Cresswell loved to push forward whenever he could and McCarthy wants to see Mings do the same when he gets the chance: “When there are opportunities on for full-backs to go, he can go. But he’s doing fine.

“He’s exciting when he’s going forward. I hope he doesn’t excite me at the back,” he joked. “I just like it to be boring and absolutely rock solid at the back, I don’t need any excitement, thank you.”

McCarthy is also pleased with the way Paul Anderson has begun the campaign, having benefited from being involved for most of pre-season this year after stop-start preparations last summer.

“Ando didn’t have a pre-season properly last year,” the Town boss recalled. “I think he was waiting for his move here to happen. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was still here at the start.

“No matter who you are, I think you get a little bit sidelined. We were trying to do that deal but when he eventually came and started he did great and I was so disappointed that he then got injured.

“He’s got better and better, Paul, I’ve been delighted with him. As a signing, he’s been terrific.”

Elsewhere, McCarthy is now 10-1 to be the next Crystal Palace manager with some bookies.

However, former Eagles boss Neil Warnock is widely quoted as an odds-on favourite to return to Selhurst Park, while Steve Clarke and Neil Lennon are ahead of McCarthy, who signed a new three-year deal with Town last month.

There is no doubt this lad has bags of talent. A premiership playing in the making if he can iron out any mistakes.

This means Parr will be playing Saturday . I am fed up with MM telling us how good his signings have been , if he thinks Anderson is getting better and better it shows how poor he was when he signed as he was awful Saturday .
I am also fed up with MM saying how if players miss pre season games they take a long time to settle in , that is why you get deals done in the summer so it doesnt affect the season , we are in the same position again this year

Give it 3 months:

"He's not for me. He's a smashing lad but he needs games. He's not going to get the games here, so he's going out on loan get some games and we'll see what happens. The door's never fully closed, but he's not my type of player and at this stage of his career he needs games."

Rotherham's website: "We're delighted to be getting as talented a player as Ty. He's quick, strong, not afraid to get stuck in and he's willing to take people on. He's got a great attitude and we predict a bright future for him."

Give it time and Mings could be a fan favourite and a top player for us even as soon as the end of this season. As for MM being included in the palace short list, I really hope he doesn't go. Now before everyone gives me stick for saying this, i know and dislike how we don't play good football, it really disappointed me that the first thing we did on Saturday when we had the ball was to good it up and lose it. However, has anyone thought about this: we don't have a team that can play attractive football? We don't have the funds to get big players in anymore (in theory, but we still got Berra and McGoldrick for frees). If we lose Mick though, who can do a better job? Seriously? We can't always blame the manager... And who knows? Maybe by January we'll have made improvements. I just really hope we improve.

I think defensively he doesn't look like a rookie, he looks relatively solid just a bit nervous on occasions but at least when he does look nervous he tends to bang it down the line rather than try something stupid and lose it near his goal which you can't complain at. He just needs to work on his dribbling as his pace and power is there and some of his crosses are good, he just needs to be able to do it all together, but at least he's been one of our very few positives this season so far.

I take some of your points but it dosent take funds to play the ball on the ground or play proper wingers or a creative midfielder.MKdons last night how much did that team cost.Mick has chosen this team and the way we play he has got in guys that suit this.

Cut out the hoof-ball then he'll be okay, very good with his feet despite being a very tall kid.

Ipswich26 ... This is MM's team and squad so what you are saying is that he has assembled a team/squad that cannot play passing attractive football, but its not his fault ?
Can he not coach or manage players to pass the ball , control the ball , look wide to feet rather than hoof it from the back , have midfielders who are comfortable on the ball and want to get it from the back four . This stuff does not cost it is about improving your players , tactics and playing to a style of play . MM 's style has always been 442 work hard , rush around and hit it too a big man up top , this has now been surpassed in football and we need to adapt .
Our team is begging for 3 at the back with wing backs as this is the players we have available Chambers,Berra, Smith with Hewitt, Parr/Mings . We could then drop one of the defensive midfielders as you would have extra cover but MM Is too rigid to make any change

Surco72...that's what I have been saying..are we all wrong or are we missing something..bring in Karl Robinson if that's the kind of football he can produce on the cheap...

....... Palace will be shrewd enough not to appoint a dinosaur, so stop worrying some of you ..... it won't happen.

And for all you excuse makers - hoped you watched what can be produced on a shoestring budget last night.

We have some of the easiest satisfied, and excuse makers in the Football League - that's why Managers see us as a mugging Club, and soft touch.

Boring and rock solid. The boring bit applies to the whole team and management. As for rock solid, how many have we conceded already?

Why are people moaning about MM commenting on players? He was clearly asked how he thinks mings has done since cresswell has moved and answered it. Now the press have decided to publish what he said, you can clearly see the title of the article so if you dont like it dont read it, simple as.

We do have some promising young defenders coming through, along with mings we have matt Clarke and Hammond when he fully recovers from injury,

I like Mings and hope he improves enough to be a regular as he has the makings of a really decent player. But if our season doesn't improve soon he may make way for the more experienced Parr.

As for our football style. There's no denying that we aren't playing good football at the moment. There's also no denying what a great job Mick has done for us given the position we were in and the funds he's been given.

However, I don't agree that having zero funds means you have to play hoofball. Players who can pass it are just as easily available as one who can hoof it. Owen Garven being a good example. It's up to the manager to hunt them out. Mick hunts out cheap players that can play in the style he wants. A different manager could to likewise for a passing style.

I'm not saying I want Mick out - he deserves a go of it and has proven success at this level - but I'm also not convinced that our budget is the reason we are playing hoofball at the moment.

Oh, and while I'm here, can anyone tell me what Skuse does? He's tidy enough, but doesn't tackle, and never makes a telling pass. As several have said before we don't need Hyam and Skuse in the middle. Replace Skuse with someone who can make a forward pass and I think we'd score more goals without impacting on the defensive side at all.

Surco72: agree completely with your comments too. 3-5-2 seems so obvious given how we have Hewitt who is an obvious wing back and Chambers who is an obvious centre-back.

Cressy would have fitted into that system really well too. Ho hum.

ozzy_itfc added 11:53 - Aug 27
Surco, i like other peoples views, just not stupid ones made by you, i dont think MM is gonna come out in public and say his signings have been poor when asked, do you?

As for 3-5-2 we tried it final game of last season and it just didnt work, thats not saying it wont ever work though, i fear with the way we are currently playing it would just end up a 5-3-2
