McCarthy: Owner's Call on Offers
Friday, 29th Aug 2014 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says it will be owner Marcus Evans’s call to decide whether offers received for his players will be accepted ahead of the closure of the transfer window on Monday at 11pm. Yesterday, the Blues boss said he hoped his phone wouldn’t ring ahead of the deadline, while centre-half Tommy Smith was linked with a possible move to Crystal Palace.

“I’m not in a position to accept a bid or to turn one down,” McCarthy said. “You’d have to speak to Marcus about that, whether there’s a value on anybody.

“That’s Marcus’s call, absolutely, it’s not [down to me]. Mine would be no, absolutely no. And I think that’s the same with Marcus.”

McCarthy, who said yesterday that there could be an addition to his squad on loan before the window closes, is keen to add to the numbers at his disposal and hopes to have injured pair Stephen Hunt and Cameron Stewart back for the Millwall game in a fortnight.

“I’d like Hunty back and I’d like Cameron Stewart back as well, two of the players who haven’t been available to me,“ he added. “That would be a really good start. I’d like reinforcements but nothing’s going to happen between now and Saturday.”

He says that with loanees still available and free agents such as Jack Collison and Darren Ambrose - who play for Town’s U21s on Monday - up for grabs the closure of the transfer window isn’t particularly significant.

“While we’ve got those [options] there’s no need to panic and I think that when Premier League teams get their squads together eventually, that’s the time that they’ll loan somebody out.”

Regarding Collison and Ambrose, he says he’s been pleased with what he’s seen of them in training: “They’ve both trained well, both look fit but it’s a different ball game playing 90 minutes on a big pitch.

“But they’ve both done OK. Neither of them look out of place in training, that’s for sure.”

Collison, who was released by West Ham last summer, and former Blue Ambrose, who left Birmingham at the end of last season, will play in Monday's U21 match against Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road (KO 7pm).

Say what you about our current situation. But Leeds have sacked Hockaday already. And that is why I'm thankful we have such a level headed owner on board and not some complete nut job! I don't enjoy the current negative football but we have to face it, we have no money. At least ME is not ruining us like Cellino is Leeds. He lets the manager manage, even if he picked the wrong manager a couple of times. But he knows his place. Hope we don't sell McGoldrick. But we know Warnock loves to buy a striker (every 5 minutes!)

I got a season ticket and it was a mistake now. I see a invisible owner that sells players for us which is wrong. Time for evans to go and have a real owner that is willing to spend the cash on grass roots getting the club ticking from the ground up not racking up more money we owe and wanting town fans to play for the youth team and seeming pocketing cresswells more to pay the bills! when he shows no comment part from keeping town afloat just but i guess that it benefits him this way via some sort of tax deductions as he running a business at a loss. 2 seasons without cash marcus and when town fans did not appoint jewell or keane but feels like we are getting punished for it. We are heading to L1 if something does not give as we are no longer able to get better players nor can I see the youth team players getting a chance. Comment with cash to get youth team going at cat 1 or Evans out had enough of it 14 years of it

Being a season ticket holder is a financial and time commitment, particularly as my personal situation has changed since last season. This is why I am particularly disappointed with the lack of signings and quality added. when I renewed I honestly thought we would strengthen the squad ... I appreciate some people think we have, but I personally don't. It's miles weaker in terms of numbers and quality .... Particularly the lack of goal scorers. I also realise that to some, 40.00+ a month is not a lot of money to pay out. However it is to others, me included, particularly if you have the added travel and other costs associated with attending every home game. I am therefore fed up of hearing 'get behind the team and stop moaning'. I do support the team, but am equally disappointed with this current team and style of play. I also don't buy FFP. We had more players last season and better quality ones without the Cresswell money. Something doesn't add up. We are sadly only going to be a mid table team until something changes. If Evans cashes in on another player and doesn't spend any of the cash, we may as well give up.

It does seem like Mick has been preparing us for the sale of an important player over the last few days- Tommy Smith or David McGoldrick being the likely departee. Losing either would be a disaster, but at least there would be reasonable cover for Smith; losing McGoldrick would see the last semblance of innovation leaving Town.
Please don't let that happen Mick/Marcus. It will ensure further drops in attendance figures & a slide down the table to the danger zone.

jas0999 its all very depressing isnt it ! They soon take your money, but then we often see on here its not a entertainment buisness ?! Isnt it ? i beg to difer,if we had had a great game Saturday against Norwich and even got a draw, that would have made people want to come back again ! so it is a entertainment buisness !

The thing is, it's not all about money. We could have a much better team for the same or lower budget with the correct manager. Look at MK Dons the other night. A team playing like that would rip us apart every time. I'm bored. I'd rather stay at home even though I have a season ticket (in fact I frequently do). Time to go, Mick.

Also, I bet you McG is off before the deadline.

One thing is for sure. Mick and TC are no mugs, they are not going to put up with being the scapegoat while Evans runs this club on a shoestring. They will be walking soon if Evans does not cut them some slack.

The club pointing out our centre backs are our best players, Berra to score more goals, smith linked with palace, chambers next? Perhaps the club could concentrate on improving the rest of the average team we have and give the fans something to be optimistic about. A couple of buys with the cresswell money to take the club forwards please rather than a last minute loan for someone who's likely to not care whether he's wearing blue or not! Rant over.

Couldn't agree more. Mick has recruited players. At the moment they look bang average. For the wages we paid for the likes of Connor Sammon surely we could get some talent from the lower leagues? I have no desire to go and watch the boring dross that McCarthy is serving up.

I agree with most of what you are saying Jas099999 but not all, i dont think we are much worse than last season but not better that for me is the worry. Dont even consider giving up for its not that bad.Mick please note,
Season ticket holders have every right to express their concerns without them being dismissed as Knee jerk.

and another thing. The players WILL read this forum, and all this negativity will be having an impact. McG will be thinking of getting out and signing for a Prem club (he is used to moving every 2 years anyway).

Mick and TC have a massive job on their hands to get the players up for the Derby game tomorrow.

The only positive I can see is that MM has put his faith in these 16 players, it is time for them to pay him back.

Sad thing Dids is probably frustrated. Our best player by far and how many times does he receive the ball to feet? If he does go it is going to be a loooong winter

If we let anyone else go we might as well resign from the championship and go play in a 5 a side competition. Hunt and Tabb might look competitive in that new walking football thing.

Worrying Times.

Tipping point ! If owner accepts ANY offers on remainder of squad, then we are in serious trouble. I can't even suggest funds would be ploughed back into strengthening team, because Cressy money appears at present to of vanished. Mick looks to be distancing himself from situation, who wouldn't . Worry times, and very depressing.

atleast if we were playing a more attacking brand of football or giving promising yougsters a chance there would be something to hold on to but for now its boring football and players like sammon and banjer not to mention tabb

I am not a season ticket holder but I probably spend more than most making the 300 mile round trip regularly to support the town so I have a right to my say. I am a little concerned but not overly, the way I see it is we are only 4 matches into the season so it's early days and I believe that the Cresswell money will be used on loaners. The more we have in the bank the more we have available to pay the share of the loaners wages that the premiership club wants and that means we can afford better loaners and not players no one has heard of. I am prepared to wait a little longer to see who MM has up his sleeve because I have a feeling he will pull a pretty rabbit or two out of the hat and we will all be praising him. My spell check keeps getting loaners wrong bugger.

At the time of season ticket sales we were told Cresswell money would be available to reinvest into playing squad , since then more wages have been taken off the bill by players released compared to players coming in ?
We were told we didn't want to rush into signings as we would be paying their wages over the summer ?
I think if any more players are sold MM may go aswell , same as Pulis .

I suggested well over two years ago ME should leave, we should go into administration take the ten points penalty, probably be relegated and start again from the bottom of the club upwards with Curbishley and Matt Holland in charge. I got about -17 on the voting thingy and would expect to get the same now but I still feel the same way. This club was in trouble from the day Sheepshanks (what made a tidy profit when Evans bought his shares) signed a £4.5 million cheque for Sereni and its identity, morals and bedrock are all severely, if not irreparably damaged.
